| | Electricity Left On < on 6/2/2011 2:26 AM >
| | | Why do places that have been abandoned for a somewhat long amount of time still have power? It seems like such a waste of money. I was just at a building that's been abandoned for about 2 years and the AC and internet are still on. Why would someone pay for that?

In temperate regions (places where there is winter): to keep the heat on and thus the structure, plumbing, etc. intact.

| | | Internet??? You sure it's really abandoned? Maybe it's just for security.
The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight" So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/ |

^^ This ^^ It has just taken longer then the owners thought. Or a government facility & they just don't care.
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

| | | Was the place still semi-active? A lot of times if they still use some of the buildings, they will leave the electric on throughout the entire complex.

| | | There have been many hospitals with full power as well. They just havent shut it off yet for some reason. And other places abandoned for 10+ years that still have power because its located on an active campus.

| | | Like somebody else said, I've seen places with power on so they could run heating in the winter to keep it from falling over. There are also places, generally near active sites, that keep the fire suppression systems operational in case of emergency.

| | | Agree with everyone on keeping vital systems running. The buildings may not be abandoned, just simply "vacant" for an extended period. Heat, cold, and humidity will kill a building's interior quick. Not much of an issue in the dry West, but places on the east coast and midwest suffer from humidity damage or broken water and fire suppression pipes from freezing if the HVAC systems aren't functioning.

| | | This should be a note to everyone, always treat every building like the powers still on even if you flip a light switch and nothing cones on, all it takes is grabbing a hot wire to become DEAD real quick.

You don't necessarily need building power to have a functional alarm, FYI.

| | | Meh, most alarm system battery packs won't last a week after power's been cut. Fire alarms will last longer than that, but not by a lot.

+1 Electricity only means that someone still cares about the place- it doesn't signify how much they care.

| | | According to a newspaper article this building had power because of the fire alarm system. Otherwise it was more or less abandoned and trashed. Didn't try the Internet, though...

I have seen locations where they run on line of power for only the alarm. Also, there are alarms that use cell phones so they don't need a hard telephone line to rat you out.

Then apparently you havent been to enough places.
Every place is different. It's general rule of thumb (that I follow, dont take it as gospel people), especially in downtown settings. If it's got electricity, it most likely has an alarm, if you dont want to keep that prudent idea in your head, be prepared to have the chance of cops showing up to check out the call they got. With my experiences, power and alarms go hand in hand, for many reasons. And OF COURSE there are variables, there always are, but generally speaking, power means alarms/cameras more times than not.
