Every place is different. It's general rule of thumb (that I follow, dont take it as gospel people), especially in downtown settings. If it's got electricity, it most likely has an alarm, if you dont want to keep that prudent idea in your head, be prepared to have the chance of cops showing up to check out the call they got.

With my experiences, power and alarms go hand in hand, for many reasons. And OF COURSE there are variables, there always are, but generally speaking, power means alarms/cameras more times than not.

i disagree with this statement about 110%. re-read the thread and see how many people pointed out that the heating and fire control panels still worked and how many mentioned alarms and motion sensors going off. if there are active alarms installed the place is less 'abandoned' and more 'vacant'.

leave the gun. take the cannoli.

Who said anything about being a decent explorer? It was about going to locations. And speaking about qualifying as a decent explorer, do i have to tag so that i can get on your level?

Maybe I worded that incorrectly.. I still don't understand what folders has to do with qualifying yourself as an expert in security systems. Why you so mad?

I agree with doncorleyone's disagreement.

From the east coast to the west, I have explored electrified hospitals, juvenile prisons, government buildings, power plants, industrial buildings, breweries, even a factory where they made orbiting satellites (Corley knows what's up)

All of them had electricity, and sometimes cameras, but guess what? Only 1 out of 10 had alarms, motion detectors, or door sensors --- and when they did, they were dead, disconnected, or were closed circuit so they didn't connect to the outside world. In a career of 50+ locations and many more exploring adventures, police have responded to an alarm I set off ONCE. One time.

Don't hold yourself back from an epic building because there "might be an alarm," you should try and scope the place out first. 90% of the time, you'll be able to get away faster than police can respond if there is an alarm

Watch out Lou, you might get asked why you think youre a decent explorer or get called a security system expert by the tagger.

I'm not the best. I'm not an expert... hell, I'm not even stealthy.

But if you want to explore a lot of (awesome) things, you have to be willing to assume that the alarms and security camera don't work or aren't watched. If so, you'll get a lot more gratification, good photos, and good stories out of your adventures.

Modesty is the best policy? There's a huge gap missing, of NE hospitals and Kirkbrides. I never managed to jump on that bandwagon.

Again, my advice to rookies is this: Don't hold yourself back. Never assume a place is off limits simply because there is power... because when it is gone or has been renovated, you might wish you had been inside. Kind of like women. You'll regret the ones you didn't do so much more than the ones you did.

More often than we think, some alarm systems are just noisemakers and nothing else. They don't call in police and they don't alert any security or building owners, and are just a scare tactic. Sometimes, as was the case just yesterday for me, it's not even possible to hear the alarm outside the building. We set off every PIR in the staircase of an old tower, and we still walked up to the roof and got some nice skylines, and set them off again on the way back down. No one came looking, and we just strolled out after we were done like it was nobody's business.
