| | | Question: What would you like to see from UER.CA? < on 9/1/2003 7:52 AM >
| | | I'm asking this of all the UEers who read this board. My Long-Term plan for UER.CA is for it to become fully linked to it's name -- Urban Exploration Resource -- a resource for / about urban exploration and for explorers. As explorers, what would you like to see on this website? What would you consider a 'resource'? Keep in mind that most of the things I plan on adding will be communal -- that is, the members of the community (you) will be able to use it, change it, add to it, just like the current Location Database. Possible ideas: Allow members of the community to post stories, which can be optionally linked to a gallery of pictures, a forum thread, a Location. A Catalog, which allows people to post information about various tools and accessories useful to UE (like flashlights, vests, boots), including a picture and links to a store. Other members can then post their experience ("i love it") etc. A FAQ, to answer the most common questions, where all members can add updates to the FAQ. What do you think? Thoughts? Comments? Opinions? Constructive criticism?

| | | I think that a section about gear that people in general can add to would be a great idea. So many people ask what they should bring, or what others use, but if everyon could post they're own gear lists, that'd certainly stop those questions. -The Lost Flock

| | | I would like to see this site moving a bit more towards other parts of this planet. For now this place is almost completely focused on North-America. Of course there isn't so many European, Asian, Australian etc members here at the moment, but perhaps there would be if you wouldn't immediately get the feeling, that this is solely meant for North-American UE'rs. This is just an idea, but if you want to promote this site as an Urban Exploration Resource, then you would need to consider the whole planet. At least I needed a bit of courage to start writing here, as I noticed that 90% of the people are from USA or Canada and the location forums concern only Canada and USA. Infiltration.org has a good example of an location database. Well they only have links for homepages, but still you can find Asia, Australia and even Africa from there. (Although I'm not sure is there any sites listed in Africa?) Just some thoughts...

| | | While I may be very new here, I really like the idea of a gear list. For instance I always carry a laser pointer in drains and I've never heard anyone else list it. The pointer can be used to determine the end of the current tunnel you are in or distance of falls etc. All the ideas seem great but this one really appealed to me.

Yeah, the idea with the gear list is good. The only problem I see, is that it could turn out to be a "look at the lot of cool stuff I have" page.

Check your local Canadian Tire store. They have those in Quebec, right? : P Otherwise, any other store that sells fishing and outdoors supplies. [last edit 9/1/2003 11:11 AM by kowalski - edited 1 times]

| | | This is just going of my pet peeve but this is what I'd like to see: Av, how 'bout when someone is registering and making their profile; make the "location" a required field. It is very important to me to know where people are. I may just have some info/questions for them based solely on their location. Now, I understand that some people do not want their location known, but they can always put *something* even if it's "as if I would tell you" or something like that. PS. gear list good.

| | | Hmm... required locations I could do... As for the gear thing, I didn't mean it to be a gear list where everyone says "I have this stuff" and just lists it. What I meant was a kind of online store... for example: You go to Radio Shack and pick up a new laser pointer. You find it works great for your UE missions. So you go to the UER Catalog Page and you click 'Add New' and type in some info. You type stuff like "laser pointer", put in a picture, the price, and a link to Radio Shack's online store. You also describe your thoughts on why this item is useful. Now, other people can look at this entry, and go "hmm that looks useful!". They go and buy one, and then they post their thoughts ("i think it's too flimsy") or whatever. See what I mean?

| | | I see what Av means. It's a great idea. The products we all use (flashlights, cameras, boots, that kinda stuff) are usually availablie in such a large variety of types and styles that it's very hard to figure out what's a good product or not. Sometimes you buy a 5$ flashlight and because it's well made it lasts for years, but sometimes you pay the same thing for a flashlight that is basically the same and it only lasts a week. You know? For instance, I bought a bunch of basically disposable flashlights before I settled on Garrity for quality and cheapness. (Of course I swear by Maglite 2AAs also) I don't think it'll be "lookit my cool stuff!" if there's no names attached to it. Reviews are a great idea. Oh, and kowalski, I went to Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, and Rona L'Entrepot (I think you guys call it home hardware or something) and the closest thing I found was waterproof pants. I've so far been unable to find real hipwaders. If you know where to get them, I can send you money to purcahse them and ship them to me. [last edit 9/1/2003 12:11 PM by uem-Tux - edited 1 times]

| | | Tux... they sell them at Canadian Tire stores out here. Hip and Chest waders actually. Strange that Canadian Tire there wouldn't have them... You can also usually buy them at Fishing stores.

| | | How about a supply link list? Y'know, like the link listed in the "Tabis for the rest of us" thread. It would be great to find out where people buy their gear (at least, on the internet) and to find the best prices for select stuff. I've seen alot of good links posted almost randomly throughout the forum. It would be great to see them all together, perhaps compiled along with the gear list. EDIT: Aha! I see that I have been beaten to the punch, as it were, by Av. What was that they say about great minds? That they always order pizza together or something? | | | Alright, I was unclear on the concept at first, but it's still a very good ieda. I am looking into eventually picking up some new gear, once I get some cash, so seeing what others think of them would help narrow the list. And yes, an international location database, as well as a forum perhaps would be cool. I'd be very interested in knowing what people are infing in europe. -The Lost Flock

| | | You know the random picture of the moment? Well since I'm impatient, I almost always click forums before looking at the picture. Then I see a quick flash of it, realize its a) interesting, and b) too late. The back button is obviously useless in this case. So, could you make the picture picked by a random generator seeded with the current date, hour, and int(minutes/10). That way the picture of the moment would be the picture of 6 minutes. Just a thought. If its at all hardto implement, don't worry about it. Caput_58

Yes! I do this on an almost daily basis. I mindlessly click the forums button then the picture loads and I decide I want to see it, but it's too late...

I think I would like to see more requests for money from the hosts of this website...In my opinion, there is nothing better than a good'ol fashioned solicitation followed by a healthy threat of termination of the website...A lord's wrath in case there's nothing in the collection plate? I just love to be bullied for cash, after spending my money on silly things like bills and gasoline... Yes, yes, I absolutely would like to see more fund raising topics.
