The Place: Henryton Center Also known as: "Henryton Sanitarium" and "Henryton Hospital" Location: Henryton, MD Visited: Yes Current Owner: State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Baltimore, MD Background: Henryton Center is located in a wooded, steeply sloped rural area in the southeast corner of Carroll County. The facility was established in the 1920’s as a tuberculosis hospital for the “Negro” population. Henryton was converted to a facility serving the developmentally disabled population (i.e., mental retardation) in 1962, and closed in 1985. It has been vacant since closing. However, the Maryland State Police currently use the facility on a part-time basis to train police dogs and demonstrate how to conduct searches, etc. The Henryton campus consists of eighteen buildings, with a total of 228,000 square feet. The campus is located on 46 acres in the middle of Patapsco State Park. The main buildings at Henryton Center include three connecting multi-story structures, built between the 1920’s and 1940, containing approximately 119,000 square feet. The earliest building comprised the original tuberculosis hospital. Two additions were built and renovations were made to the original building between the time of the original construction and 1940. There are also five support buildings located nearby. These were built between 1936 and 1952 and contain approximately 96,000 square feet. Seven small maintenance buildings or sheds scattered throughout the campus were constructed between the 1920’s and 1940 and have a total of 8,000 square feet of space. Finally, there are three other maintenance buildings constructed between 1957 and 1960. Status: The property is abandoned and currently for sale and having trouble selling due to environmental issues and the historical value of the buildings some of which cannot be torn down. Some of the buildings are very deteriorated and heavily vandalized. Asbestos, mold and lead paint are present in nearly all the buildings. Posted signs read “danger – asbestos – cancer and lung disease hazard – authorized personnel only – respirators and protective clothing are required in this area”. The complex is heavily patrolled by the local police. During my visit I saw them drive thru 3 separate times.
Photos: This is the front of the Administration building.
This is what you will see if you peek into the Administration building (pictured above) This is a view of the main hospital building from the front parking lot.
This is my favorite shot. Its the main building. Notice the odd glow near the lower left window. Ill say a reflection from another window...
If you walk down the stairs pictured above you will find this creepy utility tunnel under the main building.

An odd room on the main building

Some old transformers... All the power is off now
What appeared to be the kitchen
A room nearby the kitchen. You can see light coming from the rotted floor above.
One of the 3 times cops drove thru the property.
The staff house... wouldnt wanna live in there
The powerplant. This place made its own power. Steam heat was also generated from this building and piped around the complex.
A nearby railroad tunnel. Said to be the 3rd oldest rail tunnel in the country that is still functional.
Some valves in the powerhouse

The residential therapy building. still had nice wood floors
Education and therapy building. Very, very dark inside.

| | | How long ago was this trip? I didn't know it's been getting so much police activity lately. And where did you find that map?

| | | My trip was just a few weeks ago, maybe a month. I simply asked for permission and they sent a guy out to open the gate for me and let me park at the administration building. The guy slept in his car a few hours while I was free to wonder around. The cops knew of my presence there and stopped to say hey. I just snapped the shot as he was driving off.

Who did you contact? That's pretty cool that you got permission, everyone here has to walk down the train tracks (although the tunnel is cool)

| | | I assume going in at night would be the best bet if you do not have that contact, or is the security pretty lax if you don't have graffiti cans and crowbars? Since I lack the super-ninja maps in the black vault, what would be a good place to park before the hike in?

| | | I grew up in Carroll County, MD and going to Henryton is the thing to do for bored teenagers. I was at Henryton Center during the afternoon on Sunday, July 30 (around 12:30/1:00 in the afternoon). I parked to the left of the main gate, right out front, went through the gate and walked up the hill with, backpack with water, flashlights, cameras and two friends. We entered the main building through the open front door, and stayed inside for an hour or so before we climed out onto the roof through the auditorium for a cigarette. We also went through the "school" part, the house to the left of the main building, and the administration building. My friend is convinced that there is a morgue in one of the basements and she needs to find it. I'm not sure that is true, but we're going back Saturday. We took a "dip" in the "pool" but it didn't cool us off as much as we would have liked so we walked down past a small cottage house, the Power House and the railway tunnel, over the railroad tracks and down a path to a river where we swam with a few small children, their parents and a dog. We got a bit scared when a man in a DNR uniform walked down to the river, but he was just asking if we had seen anyone on ATVs. There is some correct Henryton information at the Carroll County Public Library in Eldersburg (less than five miles from Henryton on Libery Rd next to The Carrolltown Center)m at Carroll Community College and at McDaniel College in Westminster. There used to be a lot of information, pictures and maps at the museum located on the grounds of Springfield State Hospital but they closed the museum when I worked there six years ago. I am going to see if I can call one of the people I used to work with and figure out where all of the information went. In the mean-time, if anyone has any other information (especially maps) of the inside (crawlspaces and tunnels especially.) My photos will be up as soon as I get a chance to upload them... FUCK FLOWERS! (if you've been, you know what I'm talking about.) If anyone hasn't gone and wants to, let me know.
