| | | I cant believe a 14 foot non barb/razor wired fence cannot be scaled. I don't care about anti-climbing. I am sure with some ambition you could climb over it. |
it looks sturdy, looks as if you could get tip of toes in holes,no barbed wire i see many ways over this fence, without cutting it is that trees i see in the distance of pic,if so have you looked for entry point around that area, maybe tree assisted. one thing to remember, once on the other side make sure you have an exit point before going to far,

| | | One question: Why are these not guarding nukes or something?
Have you checked to make sure these "condos" are not actually nuclear missile storage facilities? Or maybe these are to keep in pirates and ninjas who fight an eternal battle?
Anyways, I agree with Jester, use a G-Hook in the dead of night.

| | | I personally wouldn't bother with the grappling hook. I think it would be a bit problematic to transport it, and to potentially get caught with it. And it's unnecessary. Just a nice static climbing line will get you up there in no time. I don't know if you are familiar with arborist knots, but there are a couple really simple ones that you can tie in the end to give you a nice weight to throw. They untie themselves as soon as they hit the end. So you tie the knot, an easy throw over the fence, it unties itself and drops to the ground on the other side. Pull it through and tie it to itself. Just like somebody said in an earlier post. And if you push both ends around the mesh and tie both ends to themselves, you can use the rope to descend on the other side, and to get back out again too. You don't even need fancy ascenders. Just two prussiks on the rope.

Well, if the fence grid size is the same as I climbed at the prison I mentioned, there's no way you'd get the rope through the mesh. The mesh grid had holes that barely allowed one finger to get through, too small to put proper climbing rope through. Not to mention it having a bit of a sharp edge to it.

My climbing rope is 11mm, much thinner than my fingers. And it has an average strength of 8,200 lb. Even a 9mm rope would be plenty strong enough, but a bit harder to tie a prussik onto for ascending. You just need to use a bit of wire to grab the end through the mesh. Sharp edges can be a problem. I have a bit of hose to pull over my rope to protect it in such occasions, but even shoving a piece of cardboard in there should do the trick.

| | | Even faster, and doesn't matter how thick your rope is: 1. Tie a double figure 8 in the throwing end, toss it over, lower it to the ground. 2. Tie a double figure 8 in the end on your side of the fence and clip a carabiner into it. 3. Reach through the mesh with the carabiner, catching the loop on the other side of the fence and clipping in (perhaps using a wire hook to bring the far loop right to the fence). The rope is then secure to ascend on both sides, and the mesh only has to be big enough to clip a carabiner into.

Somewhere around a dollar a foot. You're in Vancouver? Check out Pacific Arborist Supplies. http://www.pacificarborist.com/ Lots of great climbing gear. You can also just go to Mountain Equipment Co-op, but the arborist folks have more climbing gear. And they are generally quite happy to talk about different solutions to difficult climbing problems. I slightly exaggerated the strength of the rope. It does have an average strength 8,200 lb, but that's the point where it usually breaks if you apply a continuous pressure. The recommended working load is only 820 lb. Meaning if you are going to bounce around on it and be up there all day with no chance of it breaking, you don't want to be more than 820 lb. Which is still overkill for the purposes of transporting a person.

| | | along with the grappling hook i would recommend track shoes or anything with a small cleat that will get you good traction on the fence. you could also buy one of those emergency ladders and throw that over the top... and straddle the fence lowering it into the other side for your return. or the other option which no one has come forward with yet is called a french firemans ladder . i tried to find one on google with no luck. they were used before they had hydralics ladders on firetrucks. the idea is a solid piece of metal with a hook at the top, much like a really long hockey stick but instead of a blade a big hook and coming down the shaft are bars staggered on either side.. they are usually around 7 feet long or so the ladder nor the bars... definitely not stealthy but with two of these firemen used to be able to get up the sides of buildings for rescues. more importantly though aside from all this great advice you must have certainly tried to get over already.. give us an update!!!!! we are dying to hear if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence..
It seems you've just been looking with your eyes closed. |

| | | Dude, it's a desert on the other side :p Yeah I'm gonna be climbing a low chainlink fence this weekend. Sucks for you I always go for the easy stuff. EDIT: Hey I just thought of something. That fence is probably so elaborate because on the other side, there is a community. OF CHUDS!!!!!!!!!1ONE!!! Oh snap. Thats probably why he isnt posting. He got over the fence on his trusty grappeling hook and got devoured by CHUD. Even jester's 1337 ninja skills couldnt save that guy. His sacrifice will be remembered.... Or he is just on vacation or something. Maybe the hurricanes knock out his power? [last edit 10/17/2005 2:07 PM by FoxTwoFoxTwo - edited 1 times]

| | | Here is probably the quickest and best way to get over that fence.
And you'd have something to drive in on the other side once you get over.

I'm quite fine actually, just havn't visited the boards in a while. I won't have another chance at the fence until I go back down to Florida, but I will be bringing a grappling hook. Problem being I live in Tornoto. And no it's not a desert on the other side, it's a subdivision for million dollar beachfront estates, you know the type, all entwined around an executive golf course. I'm hoping to get in there to explore the skeletons of some mansions before all the security moves in. And out of curiosity what the fuck is a CHUD?

For all of you who are still in doubt about not being able to climb it without assistance. I found the manufacturer of the fencing product, or something very similar. Heres a screemshot from their promotional pamphlet.
Still think you could climb it? [last edit 10/31/2005 4:26 AM by tnarduzzi - edited 2 times]

Yes. With a grappling hook. Actually, that fence has more climb potential than the prison type I went up. It would take a bit of work, but with a strip of steel (maybe 1/4 inch thick and a bit longer than your shoe) strapped to the bottom of your shoes, with an inch or two sticking out in front, I'd bet a person could *step* up that fence, though you'd probably also need some kind of small hook to keep support for your hands. the grappling hook would be easiest, but I'd bet this would work as well. Hopefully the place turns out to be interesting enough to be worth the trouble.

Not to mention they dig into the back of your hands if you don't wear nicely padded gloves underneath!
