I just don't buy it. Scrappers are not the type to use UER to find Copper. It is a well known fact that scrap metal grows on trees in vacant buildings. I think they figured this one out all on their own. But it is a nice heads up about the amount and frequency of of the thefts and them being spotted, yet not caught. They'll get away every time, it'll be one of us that gets busted

If you honestly think that scrappers, grafiti artists, and thieves don't regularly use this website to find information on possible places to go then you are naive. This has been happening for years.

I've personally seen vandalism and scrapping increase after a site appeared online (not just UER, although the big sites like this are what pop up if you google for "abandoned buildings in <location>"). I've also seen grafitti specifically referencing explorers and websites (again, not just this site, and not something normal explorers would leave).

But hey, I'm sure that was all coincidental.

I think sometimes the vandalism is coincidental - what happened to a certain former Federal office/laboratory complex, for instance, probably didn't have anything to do with UER or UE, as it was not much publicized here or elsewhere in public. And with the exception of certain infamous individuals' actions, what's happened to the disused breweries of Saint Paul have little to do with UER or UE, either. That said, that TCAAP - which people have known about for years, but been hesitant to seriously check out (Krazy and I got harassed taking pictures outside the place in 2005) - finally gets explored, posted about online, and soon thereafter starts getting scrapped is unlikely to be a coincidence.

It could be a coincidence - scrap theft is on the rise, and it's clear the thieves are more desperate, more stupid, and willing to take part in higher-risk activities than in recent years (just look at the people in the last couple months who've tangled with live high-voltage cables) - but I have serious doubts...

As a person who runs a local MN website, I tend to think about the location before I post it. Is it maintained? Is it active? Has it been gutted? Will it be scrapped?... Questions like that those, these days influnce my decision making on what to and not post.. I've got places from 2 years ago that I've wanted to post but they're in good condition still and low key therefore I wont.. Im not a "Big site" per say that scrappers follow but none the less I take precautions and try to use common/courteous sense.

But ya i agree freak. Once a site appears online its usually within a couple years (in my experiance)that it gets fucked... look at BoM in, what was it?, September?? totally destroyed within a month of visiting it for the 3rd time..

Granted I did have a post up of BoM, but at the request of TC Drainer i took it down, until a couple other sites put it up. Then i put it back up...

I guess what im trying to say as a site admin... we're not perfect, but i think alot of people use discretion these days more and more...

When did that happen? While a few people have been exploring more and posting less, I think we've had just as many as usual doing the opposite.

Does that apply to your behavior during the actual exploring too? I heard a horror story about some guys that busted into ToT using a crowbar. I didn't like that at all. Better discretion should have prevailed that day instead of that stupid bullshit.

Whoa, Clockwork, let's not be trying to hold people accountable for their actions or anything crazy like that. ToT is far from the only place that's been visibly and obviously forced open in recent years by members of the local UE community. If we're going to start pointing fingers at people for indiscrete "stupid bullshit", let's be sure to include all the graffiti, carvings, empty beer cans, and other garbage left in sundry off-limits places over the years, all the stuff taken or stolen by certain individuals while others were all too happy to look the other way... or the signed notes taunting building owners and mocking their efforts to secure their property that some people have left.

Oh, and while people are posting local crime alerts, I thought I'd bring add this one, which isn't about TCAAP, but, still:

Entered On: Thursday November 19th, 2009 :: 10:47 a.m. CST ·
Notification Expired

Advisory
Pigs Eye Beer Flag taken from roof of old Brewery and replaced with red shirt.

Over the weekend someone entered a locked and secured area of the Old Schmidt brewery, they gained access to the roof, and took the Pigs Eye Beer flag and an 6 x 10 American Flag. They replaced the flags with a red t-shirt.

According to the caretaker, in the inseem of the flags is a reward phone number for the return of these flags.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Central Investigations Unit. On 11-15-2009 at 1530 hrs a newer volkwsagen bettle with three teenage occupants was seen on the property, these teenagers/young adults are asked to call the central invesigations unit. It is unknown if these teenagers/young adults are involved or may have witnessed this crime.

Damn, that roof was locked up really well. There must be some kind of topless ninja in St. Paul.

What's with the Nixle site? Is SPPD really passive-agressive or do they just hope criminals will check obscure Twitter clones and turn themselves in?

Well, when they find out there's a $100 reward for the capture of those flags, I'm sure they will call and get that reward. They might even be famous and be on the news. It might even pay part of their fines. I bet they go for it. I don't condone stealing flags, especially the Stars and Stripes, but had there not been a flag there in the first place..........I could find it amusing to run a flag up the pole, or underwear possibly, but not a shirt. That's just boring and dumb.

It's this annoying thing that's being pushed really hard to public safety agencies as a cost-effective way to foster "community involvement", or something stupid and catch-phrasey like that. The SPPD probably jumped on it because every other public safety agency in the U.S. is taking part. It's not exactly "obscure"; if you attended a National Night Out meeting this year, or a recent district council meeting, you were probably, ahem, encouraged to join.

I don't think anyone's expecting anyone to turn themselves in because of a Nixle alert; the idea seems to be more "community policing on the cheap", and it seems relatively effective, so far. Most of the stuff sent via Nixle is stuff that was already being made public in one way or another, but by centralizing the distribution and making it available to anyone with a computer or a cellphone, they're getting it in front of a lot more eyes than would have otherwise been the case. I mean, the TCAAP messages posted earlier in this thread would have otherwise been released in an obscure bimonthly PDF file somewhere on the sheriff's website, and seen by perhaps a few dozen people. The fact that someone saw it and posted it here suggests that Nixle is at least helping reach a wider audience.

Somewhat cynically, sending out an "alert" via Nixle is also likely an inexpensive and effective way to be seen to be "doing something", which is sometimes important when victims/property owners/city councilmen are raising a stink and demanding action where there really isn't any to be had. And, who knows? Maybe somebody out there knows something useful, and happened to see the Nixle message. Stranger things have happened...

Wow! Where did that come from?

I dont believe this is the proper place for this.

But I will say this.

While ToT was a gray-area for us. There was NOT a crowbar involved in that.

ToT was already partially open from someone else at the time.

Last time I visited was back in July. Talked with Glass or Rin (Cant remember) then in September when he was in town and told me it got totally destroyed.

I think that graffiti* artists don't give a **** about doing research on where they tag stuff...
And Thieves? There is nothing of real value in these buildings..sure, scraps, but you can drive down half the roads in this country and find buildings you can scrap. If you honestly think that people go on this website to find copper and shit, you definitely need to be more exposed to the real world...people don't do research, they just find abandoned buildings and steal.
