| | | Scaggs, you got the right idea. Mindcontrol $33K is NOT a lot of money. It never pays you to piss a cop off, or be be rude with one. The same applies to judges. A little respect goes a long way, and putting yourself in their shoes for a moment helps you to understand why taking your attitude will only encourage bad results when dealing with police. Don't put yourself in a situation were a cop has to, or worse, wants to arrest you. If your really not doing too much wrong, how you interact with the cop(s) has a lot to do with the out come. Remember too, it's not unlikely if you live there that you will deal with them again. If you can't understand these simple concepts, your likely to have a worse time with your encounters with LEOs. This has nothing to do with politics and cops don't want to hear a lot of double talk when trying to sort a mess out.
Nomeus as Scaggs commented, my post is also not directed at you. I would get this thread removed if I were you. At least until this is legally done and over with. Cover your ass.

| | | a lot of the members of this website are minors I read several posts on UER where minors are being encouraged to carry a weapon while exploring to help with their irrational fear of homeless people and members espousing their carry permits and their deadly force training and essentially blowing their horn about their supposed military prowess etc Scaggs is right there are a lot of minors here, the best thing they can do is cooperate and show remorse if arrested. Adults? same goes for them, flippin off the man just demonstrates recalcitrant demeanor and may get you what wouldve been a slap on the wrist or a fine something a lot worse like the maximum. If I was a judge and some little piss-willy teenager came to my court sayin fuck the police and down with the establishment (or was quoted saying that from the arrest record or Internet forum) I'd impose the max sentence/fine on their arrogant young ass.

Uhh, 120K? http://www.nypd2.o...ecruit/salary.html That, and 120K is not that much in NYC. Remember, garbage men bring in 80K-90K, so it's all relative. Of course, the cost of living is getting better there, but not much. The average LEO in America is making around 30K. Not nearly enough to get shot at for a living. The point is, I've dealt with a lot of cops over the years, have a few friends who are or were LEOs, and they've all been decent human beings that chose that profession. Have all of those encounters started off cool? No way. In fact, most of them start out pretty heated, because that's what they train them to do: be in charge of the situation. Once they find out you're genuine and aren't there to cause trouble, things cool down. [last edit 3/18/2007 3:08 PM by Scaggs - edited 1 times]

| | | from wikipedia : Nassau and Suffolk County are often noted for having some of the highest police officer salaries in the country. A lot of these police are very hostile to the lesser affluent who live on the island. The county jail in Nassau has been probed by the Federal government for prisoner abuses, including death. ______________________________________ from http://www.co.suff...ew/recruitment.htm : 2007 starting base salary for a Police Officer is $57,811. With five (5) years of service, the base salary is $97,958*. These figures do not include paid benefits. ______________________________________ alright. all this discussion is starting to prove is that everyone's experience with everything is different... i've had many encounters through my life in 3 different countries, and about 7 different states. i have never had a problem dealing. and like you, i like to make friends with LEOs too. they often are interesting people, with very interesting lives... my statements are based on their treatment of people when they arrive on a scene of disturbance pumped up and 'ready for some action'. delicately put to say the least. it's all based on appearance, sex, and your standard of living just because i and you enjoy a degree of non-bias with the police does not mean that millions of others have the same situation FYI, 36k was extremely comfortable for me and my partner in LI. *pulls hatchet out of dead horse* [last edit 3/18/2007 4:09 PM by mindcontrol - edited 2 times]

I totally agree that cops treat people differently according to their appearance and how they react to LEOs. In fact, that's my whole point: dress decent, wash your ass, and be respectful and you'll generally have a good experience. Wear all black, carry a large Mag-lite, give the cops lip, and you're going to jail.
Even when I lived in Mexico I had the same experience. And Mexico is quite possibly one of the most corrupt nations on earth. Treat the cops with respect and you're good to go.

Exactly right Scaggs, most cops are descent people, but they are trained to take control especially when on duty. They use how you respond to that show of authority somewhat to gauge if your a threat or a problem that needs to by dealt with. That's why it's best to put yourself in their shoes for a moment. ( They are trained to look for patterns of behavior too, and some are very good at this. It's best to be straight up with them most times, and if you lie, it best be by omission.) Once a cop has control of a situation, and feels you are cooperating, they are much more likely to be helpful, and even overlook certain wrong doings.

Carry a weapon or B&E tools will have predictably bad outcomes if police encounter you. Acting nervous, arrogantly, or is a rude manner, will be likely to cause the officer to go by the book and get you for what ever he can find. Cops will work with you even after an arrest if they feel you are cooperating and made an honest mistake.

really my main intention with this post was to tell people to be careful of how you look, where you go, who you go with, what you have on you etc. i dont encourage weapons at all but small defense pepper spray could give you the upper hand in any situation (and no i do not mean against the police). i mean if you encounter unfriendly people while youre exploring. people talking about carrying a firearm while exploring....that shit is absurd. i cant even imagine what would have happened to me if i had a handgun the night i was arrested. why take the chance?

Goddamn. I guess I'm spoiled. I can't live on anything less than $40K down here in the South. But then again, I do enjoy expensive toys.

True. I have to remind myself NOT to wear all black when I explore, since it tends to be my day to day uniform.
