| | | | i wouldn't recommend it. my mom works at a hospital. lots of biohazardous waste and other dangers if you're going places you're not supposed to be. as well as if you get caught in say, the basement, it's not going to be at all easy to talk your way out of it. doctors know what areas patients and visitors are allowed to be in, and there are plenty walking around the halls. the only place you might be able to use the "i'm lost" excuse would be if someone says something while you're in the halls. if you're anywhere else, you could get in trouble because for all they know you could be putting anthrax around the building or doing other terrorist-type activities. and if you're fucking around with any equipment, you'll get yourself into deep deep shit.
also, hospitals are meant to be a mostly sterile environment. don't want to accidentally get an OR contaminated or anything now.
might as well try to explore an active police station and see how long you last.

Most of a hospital is pretty much open to anyone, and no one will challenge you or stop you, unless you look like you know that you shouldn't be there. There are certain areas that are more closely monitored than others, though, and those are your main problem if you can't recognize them. Psychiatric wards, intensive/critical care areas. You can even be in most "non public" areas, like basements, without arousing suspicion, simply because in a large hospital, everyone has their small areas of responsibility, and very few people care who you are or what you are doing there.

| | | | I explored the hospital once when I was a patient there. I was in a new section on the 2nd floor and the 3rd floor was still under construction. I told security when they asked what I was doing and told them I got off the wrong floor and the elevator didn't come back and was looking for stairs. Yes, the elevator still went to the 3rd floor. They bought it and led me back to my floor. I wondered the basement past the morgue, which was locked. Its actually down the hall from the cafeteria. and near the elevator that took me back to my room. Walking around at night with an IV pole, no one bothered me. Just wish I had my camera.

| | | | I did once, I found two whole floors of one of the main wings completely mothballed. It looked like all of the staff just got up one day and never came back, (which in all likelihood is probably not to far from the truth) it was actually pretty eerie.

Roaming about a hospital as a patient versus as an uninvited guest are two very different things.
Hospitals are becoming more security aware, they keep narcotics and other items people love to steal. Many states have new laws that address crimes that take place in structures that house people, with stiff penalties.
The newer smart cameras can recognize faces, and can tell who belongs and who is a stranger. There are a lot of loose ends here that can snag you, and the DA isn't likely to warm up to your cause very easily except for the bonfire he'll be stoking for you if your charged with any serious offenses.
...and if you don't UE and post the pics...
not only will people here think there's not a hair on your nut sack....
they'll think you shave it

One time I was taking pictures of a hospital lobby for a sociology project, and security kicked me out. I can understand why.
1) Don't take pictures of patients without their permission.
2) Don't ever get in the way of doctors or nurses.
3) Don't give security a hard time. You might have your problems with security guards and these guys come from the same talent pool as normal security guards, but working in a hospital is a hard, stressful job and they don't deserve extra trouble.

I don't know how it is anywhere else, but in this hospital we have actual police officers come by from time to time, and occasionally(once or twice a day)do rounds with the security guards. Believe me, if they catch you doing something suspicious, they will not hesitate to stop you, and kick you the hell out if you haven't got a good reason to be where you are! Plus, in this and the sister hospital in KCMO, they have cameras and, rumor has it, motion detectors in places you wouldn't likely notice! Trust me, I've thought of snooping around many different times, but I like having a job too much...
I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam... |

| | | | In the hospital I work at (suburban, but with a large regional burns and plastics unit) security is in places super-zealous, in other places non-existant. We certainly don't have police on site unless they're escorting prisoners. I'd advise against trying to access functioning wards; ethically it's iffy, and people who aren't meant to be there really stand out. By all means though, do check the publicly accessable bits out during visiting hours (mid afternoon's a good bet, they'll probably be listed on ward doors.), and be on the lookout for a chance to explore some of the more interesting sites (there absolutely will be tunnels).
Oh, most hospitals have a speciality or two, cardiology, renal, etc.. Try to find out what the hospital you want to visit likes to deal with. If your presence is questioned, prehaps you have friend getting transferred from a nearby hospital to said special unit? This happens a lot, the information is usually not passed along when shifts change. Almost all staff outside the ward are uninformed as to who is or isn't arriving, and everyone's quite used to out of place looking people milling about or loitering by doors. If pressed further, explain that you think the imaginary patient's discharge has been delayed (you can never get a transfer ambulance to arrive the same shift it was booked), and that now you've got your bearings maybe you might grab a coffee whilst you're waiting. Obviously, then go home.
Anyway though, yeah, there's lots of interesting things to see in hospitals, even in the bits anyone can access. Do be careful though, any CCTV is almost certainly being actively monitored.

This place is funny.
Recently someone stole the PS2 from the Childrens wing. Really sad that someone would go to such lengths but I have to admit I did chuckle abit.
