There's more to UE than just hospitals that is surely the truth. Large industry in the US is dead and decaying, and prolly more fun to shoot anyway.

This man speaks the truth. A-fucken-men!

OP just go check out the fucking hospital already. Regardless of your outcome it will be vastly more interesting to read about your adventure than another thread asking for direction, advice and should I do this, should I do that. The point of exploration is to discover and learn things, go forth and experience these things grasshopper. Discover and learn. Hell you might get chased as well, that's probably more fun than anything.

Okay.
I just want to say, that it being my first time in there, and rushed, it was more about the experience than the pictures.

But still, give me some time and a few more locations, and you'll see my stuff up for critique and constructive criticism. So here are a few of them.

This happened yesterday...

And just so you know, I lay awake last night thinking about all the shots I didn't get and how I wished I had brought the tripod.

this isn't a criticism so much as a curiosity, but why did you use the flashlight instead of flash as a light source in some of those pictures?

I was using an old Nikon 5700 Coolpix. When I put any of my lenses on- the internal flash becomes obstructed.

My girlfriend was using a Sony A 100 (She just bought the a 700, and lucky me, I get the 100) and has no experience shooting in low light level. I didn’t feel like I had the time to tell her to flip the flash up, I kinda wanted her to have her own complete experience

I just felt that for this trip, it was all about finding it and getting in. I could have gone crazy and brought my external flash and my tripod, but I just wanted to be able to dive under old beds or jump out a window if the cops showed up (and they did).

As far as the light –that is a Surefire E2D. I felt that the risk was minimal using it to see, I’ve always read about controlling your light source and keeping it from giving away your position.

I don’t know what I was thinking, except picturing cops watching flash bounce through some of the open windows from the outside. The light seemed safe and controlled.

It sure was a trip being in such a large structure and hearing every sound you made travel throughout the building. We stopped more then once, scared out of our minds at the sounds we ourselves had made. You know the drill. We’re standing there, tripping out on some artifact on the floor, or looking at some crazy stain on a bed that looks like blood. Then you hear noise, freak out for a second –turning out the light and waiting in the darkness to see if you really are alone.

I can only imagine how sound travels in some of the large sites.

I want to go back. I want to go back right now. I want to adjust the camera settings and use a flash and a tripod. I want to hit the one section of the building I forgot about on my way out in haste. I want a second try at the pictures I took, and I want to get the ones I missed.

Sigh.

Next time will be better.

fair enough. i do recommend having a tripod with you, you can get some pretty small and light ones these days. external flash is optional, i use a hotshoe flash with mine, but mine is a film SLR and has no built-in flash. my first time shooting with flash was the first time i really explored an industrial building. i knew enough not to use flash anywhere near the windows, but on the lower levels i didn't even worry about it. who's going to see a flash when you're on an underground level of an abandoned factory?

and i know what you mean about hearing sounds and freaking a bit. wait until you explore large industrial buildings, the sounds will be louder and carry farther. you freak yourself out a bit more sometimes when exploring alone too. you're lucky your girlfriend was cool with tagging along.
