this is a place i discovered today and all the power cords seemed cut, but there seemed to be a nearly new set of motion detectors inside. what do you guys think?

the wires seemed cut

theese were cut too

But yet inside it looked as if there were 2 lights on and there were fairly new looking motion detectors.

Moved mostly because it's too stupid to exist in UE Main, and I'm curious what his reaction will be.

Ok... What I see here is 1 cut wire. The neutral line. The 220 is still very much connected and feeding stuff. The building will still receive power even with the neutral cut. It is just running through the bonded building ground at this point. Not very safe but works. Whoever cut the Neutral was not thinking smart.

Be very careful!

Well I can't really see inside the boxes from the pics you took. But if lights are on inside I would say power is on.

see if you can find a power meter and see if it is logging kwh. also, see if you can see any lights blinking on the motion detectors. they can't see through glass, so youre safe just peeking through the glass

Oh, you know those lights. Always pretending to be hooked up to electricity to scare intrepid explorers away. Crafty bastards.

But in all seriousness, someone is probably using the building for storage after the original owners moved out. I have explored quite a few buildings with the lights on in some parts, but I'd definitely be more cautious of any that do.

Two ways I can think of to deal with this.

  • (this'll piss all you ethics nazis off, but I don't care, I come to UE from a different background)
Get a pellet rifle and shoot out every line you see coming off the house with it. come back the next day and explore.
  • Break in. leave. see if cops show up.
Odds are the alarms are local only if they're live. In that case you can just walk in and disable the alarms after they go off (assuming nobody called the pigs on you)

Look closely at this picture here.... You see the lights on further down the corridor right?

Now this facility has been abandoned since the 70's. Scrappers have ripped out every bit of wire they could. The power poles going down the road are long gone... But yet.. 2 Lights in the hall are still on! I know how and why... Do you?

I will let you all guess that one for bit.

Could be. Motion detector-based alarm systems are relatively inexpensive. We had one in my house growing up. If the building or anything inside has any value, it is highly possible it is alarmed.
