| | | That building could be powered from an underground scource, the power lines you see could have been cut decades ago. A building nearby, or a big green box (transformer) could be suppling power. Most alarm systems have a battery backup, if the batteries are still good, and a horn and detector devices are hooked up.............it will make noise, Or silently alert a central monitoring station, who in turn will roll out themselves, or call the cops.

| | | They were indeed on... I found that they had been wired into a solar panel on the roof. The batteries were long since shot but the solar cells on the roof kicked out enough juice to light them up a bit when the sun was out. It looks like it was done as a project not too long ago. Most of the gear on the roof was too new looking compared to the rest of the place. But I did not notice it at first when entering the hall, I figured it was the sunlight playing tricks on my eyes as well.

Have you been to the greyhound track outside Denver? That place looks cool, but I think you'll need a car to get there. Just throwin it out there I believe there is a thread in Four Corners with pics from there

if it's the one in peoria you're referring to, that one is now a 1/8 mile dirt oval track. there's photos in the DB from when it was still abandoned.

Really? I know some people were there in March/April. It could be it's been redeveloped since then, it is right next to a hospital I believe. Or maybe it was a casino next door? I don't know but it looked like it was in very good shape

Oh, you know those lights. Always pretending to be hooked up to electricity to scare intrepid explorers away. Crafty bastards. But in all seriousness, someone is probably using the building for storage after the original owners moved out. I have explored quite a few buildings with the lights on in some parts, but I'd definitely be more cautious of any that do.

Hey, there are some of those sneaky lights in a building nearby. After going inside with some friends, we determined that it was only on to keep people like us out

| | | My 1st time to St. E's we went around about an hour before sunset so it wasn't long b4 it went dark. We would be walking down this dark ass hall (used minimal flashlight so we couldn't be seen thru windows) and all of sudden we would see flickering light around the corner and down the hall. Some of the rooms had power some of them didn't..it was weird. Also I noticed the clocks on the wall were all functioning and all had the same time on them too... so those must of been synced somehow. It was strange to see lights that still worked cause everything else was so trashed, I just figured all the lights would have been trashed too or that they would have at least turned off power to a bldg. that has been abandoned for years...
sorry for the crappy phone pic!

| | | I've seen buildings with alarm systems powered by a car battery and hooked up to a land-line phone line to auto dial the local PD. It doesn't take much to power a security system. In the past, I've found one way to investigate a place I think might be alarmed is to figure out where the local PD is. If it is more than a 5-10 minute drive from where you are, climb in. run around through as much of the building as you can in 2-3 minutes, climb out. sit somewhere nearby for an hour or so. See if anyone comes to investigate. If they don't, you've got a pretty good indicator. Still, treat each location with kid gloves until you've got it figured out and even then, never let your guard down. All it takes is a single cop to change his daily routine just the slightest and you're now completely fucked.

| | | I was exploring a huge old barn a mile from my place. There was no power going to the place. The whole place was pretty empty. Well, at one end there was a door to what looked like a storage room/office. There was no handle or anything. Just a push open door. Well it pushed open pretty easy! It looked like there was furniture and stuff packed away in there, all covered with half a century of dust. I didn't get a good look, because that barn had the loudest fucking alarm. Almost like a ship's horn crossed with a siren. It must have been battery powered. Well, me and my friend skeedaddled out of there as fast as possible. Sadly, this barn was 100 yards from our fire chief's house and a whole bunch of other homes. The chief just said, "hey, how's it going?" Didn't even pay attention to air raid-like siren. Man, was he naive. I'm never going back there again just to be safe.

| | | Could be. I have a pretty good knowledge of security systems, and my best guess is that the alarm is a motion sensor. The thing is is that the actual alarm speaker is outside. I'm trying to figure a way to disable it, but I'm going to wait until my hearing is back to normal hahahaha!

| | | Haha! Is this as simple as just cutting the wires to the speaker? I'm interested to know how this turns out. Keep us posted.

| | | Well I found the lil' fucker, I mean speaker. It's about twenty feet of the ground. I'll take a picture if I pass by soon. It's a small box with a wire mesh hole. I wonder if a pellet gun would disable it if I hit it in the center...

| | | It might. But how do you test it? Would it be easier to cut the wires closer to the power supply?

| | | I'm positive it's battery powered, but I don't see any wires leading to it. It's about 60 years to old to be wireless. I think the wiring goes directly through the wall into the back of the box eliminating external wires. I think the alarm is a motion sensor. I've seen antiquated versions, but it could just be a trip-beam. There is nothing worth protecting left in this barn, so it's useless. people haven't been inside it in a couple decades, and the original owner died years ago. It's fun to figure out these systems!

| | | meh, assuming the wall's sturdy, wallrun up, grab speaker. odds are it's cheaply mounted and will rip the hell off the wall, tearing the wiring in the process. free siren for you, no more alarm for building. or toss the hardware store rope over it and jump up and down on the rope.
