Posted by snap228So yeah. Now I just do it for the thrill and the artistic interest. And the history. It always amazes me to see what people have left behind. It makes you wonder what was going through their head when they were leaving, and where they are now, etc. It's funny, because it becomes almost an obsession. I can't NOT UE. I spend all my time at work looking at potential locations, and mapping out day-trips I could take. I don't think I could stop if I wanted to.

This.

Pretty much exactly the same as snap228. I love my photography & love exploring the history of a building and the way urban exploration gives you a snapshot of a location/society just before it was abandoned.

If I didn't explore I don't know what I'd do with my life, but it would probably involve hookers and blow.

I urbex for 3 reasons.

1. Photography
2. Thrill/adventure- finding a way in, getting in and out without being seen.
3. History- I am a studying Historic Preservations so I love being in historic buildings.

I do it for my love of abandoned places, and even though I love photography, when I photograph an abandoned structure it's purely so I can go back and look at it.

I found an interesting lesson in that recently. I took a group of about 6 friends to the Rochester Subway (the most entry-level location in the area), and found about 40 people already there. Turns out is was a group from the University of Rochester. Anyway, several of my friends commented that it felt less like exploring and more like just going to a tourist destination. I think that's a strong part of it- it wouldn't be nearly as fun if it was sanctioned, approved, and acknowledged by society.

Be careful, not safe.

The rational mature adult part of me wants to disagree and say exploring isn't about breaking the law but about seeing places most people don't even know exist, but really, I think everyone of us enjoys the pleasure (guilty or otherwise) or doing something we're not supposed to.

1) Photography. I like that my photos of locations don't just show someone how it looks, but the way that I envision the memory of it in my mind. For me, it's a reflection of the mood of the actual exploration.

2) I love the way 'regular' people react when they hear about our crazy adventures, or see the photographs. They are in awe, because they had no idea such places existed. We can show them a whole new world.

3) I love the silence of rotting old farmhouses. When it's just you and the sound of the wind howling through the broken windows...

I get what you all are saying, but that really hasn't ever motivated me. Nowadays it's more a matter of habit, and has been all mixed with photography and camaraderie, but I remember back when I was but a wee lad, standing on the property line or at the rotted open window, filled with the anxious expectation of what would happen if I crossed that line....

It wasn't specifically because I was about to break a law or do something that I wasn't supposed to, it was more subtle than that. It was because I was about to cross over a line that most people just wouldn't, for whatever reason. It's not in any way wrong to go into an abandoned place, as long as you are careful and responsible, but so many people live their lives closed off from the possibilities that surround them. It is liberating to cross that line and step out of the simple framework that society wants you to construct around yourself, which is designed to keep everyone in line and mindlessly consuming.

So, for me, it's not precisely because I'm not supposed to do it. It's more-so because it isn't done... I want to see what's in there, and see what it's like where society is so afraid to go.

I don't UE-I'm doing participatory action research on HOODLUMS AND GANGSTA'S who visit abandoned buildings, drains and other places.

And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here.
