I've been UEing since I was four. An abandoned house across the street drew me in like a starving puppy to a box of Snausages.

"Don't go in there," my psycho hippie mom chided me when I told her of my adventure, "There might be diseases in there."

As I struggled to envision what a "disease" was, the image of a fat half-smashed grub I'd found in the house came to mind. It seemed pretty harmless, so I kept going.

A year later, an errant 16-year-old babysitter took me along with her friends to infiltrate the basement of an abandoned hotel down the block.

Two years after that, after moving to the complete opposite end of town, I found another abandoned house which I visited regularly.

At 17, I followed the example my own babysitter set down before me and took the kids I was watching to a gorgeous gothic revival victorian brick ediface in the middle of a state hospital. I boosted the 8-year-old up to the window. He pushed it open, slid inside, ran down the stairs, and unlocked the door for us. We spent many happy hours in that place exploring all three floors and the creepy basement.

I like UE because I want to know what people have left behind, what they have abandoned and why. Most people eschew the unfamiliar, the estranged, the "unpopular" - be they places, people or ideas. Nearly everyone has a fear of abandonment. Visiting abandoned places has us subconsciously connecting with that feeling. Since our relationship with places is so different than that with other people, communing with an abandoned place serves to dissipate that fear so we can find the beauty within, and understand all the better, the empty spaces within ourselves.

Someone once asked George Mallory why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. He replied "Because it is there."

It's the thrill of being where you're not supposed to I guess. The thrill of seeing where people once inhabited and what they left behind.

But I just do it for the epic. I mean, you've got bragging rights forever to say that you explored the whole of Danvers State or Metropolitan ect.

Justice works on the principle of equal torment for all. Under no circumstances may justice find a mistake excuseable.

Where are the bragging rights in seeing things that everyone and their mom was doing at the time? Just curious, because I believe I must be missing something crucial here.

For me it started out as seeing places nobody else gets to see, as time went on it evolved into getting into places deemed impossible... now, habit more than anything else.

Exploring is like tattoos... They stopped being cool in 2005

Old buildings are cool, plus, when I explore I can get some peace and quiet and just get away from everybody.

it's slightly more entertaining than knitting or tiddlywinks. but not much.

You beat me to this joke. For that, you are now my enemy.

But seriously, I accidentally stumbled upon this hobby. I had two male friend at the time who wanted to check out this old mill, and at first I didn't want to go because getting in required climbing down a collapsed elevator shaft and getting dirty, but once I was inside, I fell in love. Then I got into the photography aspect and that seems to be what is keeping me here.

I also really enjoy the "thrill of the hunt." I've spent hours researching places online, in libraries, talking to older people in the community and trading info with other explorers. Not to mention the friends I've made.

I UE because it's a healthy hobby that reminds me that I'm still alive without having to use drugs or drink alcohol or something like that as a kid.

Plus it tones other skills like photography and climbing and other basic athleticism traits.

Plus it's fun to be able to share experiences on the site.

It's not easy being cheesy.
