| | | Posted by trent 1.) Everyone that does UE has at least one type of mental disorder that allows us to enjoy smelly, dead, decayed, shit covered things. 2.) I like the history/photography/seeing cool things. 3.) It's an escape from the 'real world'. Draining even more so. 4.) It's a little bit of an adrenaline rush. 5.) As Nan would probable agree "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."

This, also simply because its there, and I'm not supposed to be in there. I always wonder what is behind a closed door, or what was left behind that boarded up home/buisness. Even moreso why someone would leave all their crap in a place for years on end.

| | | With the vapid consumerism of contemporary American life, I wanted to do something real and original using the head God gave me. Moreover, I was interested in UE well before I even knew that other people were as strange as myself. I visited construction sites with my brother and always made a habit of exploring any hotel our family visited. Being trapped in a place with only a bicycle as your transportation makes you search deep for your fun. Asking someone why they explore the urban jungle is like asking someone why they enjoy eating food, having sex, or taking long naps ... they are all very human activities, and so is exploring our environment.

| | | I have a fascination with mental health and it's history. I came across one of Tom Kirsh's photos of an old wheel chair. From that point forward I sparked a huge interest in urban decay. Now it's for the rush and history each location brings
The caged being inside of you must break free from his shackles, for our partial sanity or pseudo-sanity, if so applies, cannot contain it forever without repercussion of mental breakdown. |

| | | Started off as simple teen rebellion. Now I like to do it just to hone my photography skills, and I think that abandonments give a lot of good opportunities for great pictures. And I still kind of like fighting the man.

| | | I'm always fascinated by what people don't bother to take with them. And seeing how quickly nature moves in to reclaim the property is cool too. I've been interested for years but didn't do anything about it until recently. Then I got a new camera and had a family tragedy and needed something new. UE was it. The photographic opportunities are huge and it has no connection to the past for me, so it takes me away from the everyday. Not to mention there is that heart pumping excitement that comes from going where you aren't supposed to be. My pics tend to get better the longer I'm there as I settle down into a false sense of security!! And btw, every single friend I tell about UE wants to join me. This might be considered a f*d up hobby by many, but apparently all my best pals are as f*d as me!!! LMAO

| | | Man, a lot of disparate reasons. Since I asked, I suppose I should try to articulate my reasons. Macman5151: "Hi, I'm Macman5151, and I UE." Support Group: "Hi, Macman5151!" I think I started based on "It's kind of fun to do the impossible," since my first UE-esque experience was a college roof. Getting where I was never expected to be able to get was a bit of a rush. From there it was that, plus a bit of interest in history, mixed with a (un)healthy dash of adrenaline. UE motivated my entrance into the world of photography, which in turn has changed my UE motivations a bit- I find myself increasingly drawn to places I wouldn't have otherwise been that interested in, but for the photographic opportunities. So, now, I'm motivated by: the thrill of getting in, the history of the place, the photographic opportunities, and, of course, some degree of psychosis.
And btw, every single friend I tell about UE wants to join me. This might be considered a f*d up hobby by many, but apparently all my best pals are as f*d as me!!! LMAO | That's a bit weird; I don't talk /too/ much about UE, but those I've mentioned it to often have a hard time understanding why it would interest me. Those that are a little bit intrigued often ask "where do you find these places?" to which I respond "lots of research and hard work," which turns most of them off.
Be careful, not safe. "Urbex- so much fun that it should be illegal." |

| | | I discovered UE out of boredom. My friend and I would sit in her driveway wondering what we should do so we started to drive down all the canyon roads trying to freak ourselves out. Now I do it for the adrenaline rush and the history. I love finding things that tell me about someones life wither it be a simple chair or a old newspaper clipping.

I hear you there, the few people I've told have all asked me what kind of drugs I'm on when I've come out of a drain of the weekend. But that's the beauty of it! UEing is a wholesome and fulfilling experience where you don't need drugs or alcohol or smalltalk to enjoy your surroundings. And the locations are so rewarding after the hard work and effort put into researching them. I also enjoy the adrenalin of being in a dangerous place, the serenity of a forgotten building and the privilege to be able to see first hand what many people can only dream of.

| | | I figured it was about time to reply to this. I got into UE gradually. For my final project in my photography class, I did "urban decay," and started by photographing the outside of old, decrepit buildings. I started to find more and more of them, though, and eventually I began going inside to photograph them. It was more of a freedom thing than anything else for me. I was never much of a "rules are there to break" kind of person. I got tired of always being told what to do, and decided, fuck it, if I want to go in and take pictures, no one can stop me. I decided I didn't care anymore about the consequences of the hobby, because I liked doing it. So yeah. Now I just do it for the thrill and the artistic interest. And the history. It always amazes me to see what people have left behind. It makes you wonder what was going through their head when they were leaving, and where they are now, etc. It's funny, because it becomes almost an obsession. I can't NOT UE. I spend all my time at work looking at potential locations, and mapping out day-trips I could take. I don't think I could stop if I wanted to.
