You know, I hadn't even thought of Deus Ex...still trying to forget the atrocity that was Deus Ex 2 on Xbox...

Hopefully you are referring to Deus Ex on PC?

Speaking of exploring fictional places, or distant time periods, would System Shock be another I forgot to mention?

Oh, and did you hear that Warren Spector is supposedly working on Deus Ex 3?

i would have to say the best UE- related game is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Im surprised nobody has said that. The feel of almost free reign abandoned buildings to explore just screams UE, with semi-realistic hazards that go along with it,
mutants (=animals), soldiers(=security) and bandits (= gangs, thugs, etc.). you also can have buddies in the game too, but thats just my opinion.

That is a game I wish I had the PC to run...by the way, a sequel is coming out this fall?

See, because I don't have the money to properly outfit my PC, what with the various other expenses that occur, I have gone the route of console gaming...and sadly S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is not out for consoles...

By the way, and this is completely off topic, but I have an Xbox 360, and if anyone has one, and is interested in gaming or talking UE, my Gamertag is: Anath3ma D3vic3.

Just a thought...and it would be cool to meet other UE'rs interested in having an amateur along...

Even more relevant that System Shock (and made by the same company) is the Thief series. I'm surprised that hasn't been mentioned. Sneaking into buildings, evading guards -- there's a heavy emphasis on avoiding people instead of attacking them. The character takes more than just pictures, though. Still, the closest to UE I've seen a game come, really.

GTA Vice City has some pretty cool ghetto/ abandoned areas in Little Havana.

As well as a couple abandoned houses that are parts of missions.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

What branch are you joining, if I may ask? The ASVAB isn't nearly as difficult as people make it out to be, but to further complicate matters for myself, i was a High School dropout...please, don't go that route. It all ended well though, as the NAVY provided me with a formal Diploma...which they actually just handed me, rather than going the route of deserving it. The Petty Officers forgot I had to attend ACES, and thus when I received my discharge papers I was handed a Diploma as well. Unique, indeed.

But anyways, if you do join the NAVY you will be trained at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL, and believe me, there is some good UE to be had.

Air Force.
I'm definitely finishing high school though.

I would have included Thief, but although it rewards you for not getting caught and for not harming anyone, doesn't it also break one of the unofficial rules of exploration; take nothing? Haha, just kidding, I actually forgot about that one as well.

Hmmmm...it seems as if there are a lot of titles that I forgot to include, but are all excellent examples of this theme...

Oh, what about (coming soon at least) Left 4 Dead? It looks like incredible fun, is made using the Source engine, and features a vast city (fictional?) abandoned...kind of.

Oh, and what about Messiah? Has anyone ever played that? Though it lacked much of what we have as standard in gaming today, it also included a few desolate and abandoned areas.

Yeah, all Grand Theft Auto's got the exploration part down...which makes me so incredibly, well, giddy, about the release of the 4th.

Deus Ex 3. What else needs to be said, eh?

In response to the military post, in retrospect I wish I had entered the Air Force rather than the Navy. It is easier to explain any erroneous situations that may have arisen in the past, and they don't take for granted what you are capable of; well, not as much as the Navy did at least.

Listen to me, sounding bitter and all...no, really though, it was an experience, to be sure. And look at me now, post-Navy, post-dropout, married for 4 years, and maintaining the finances of a Chiropractic Office. Oh, and exploring, or "hacking reality," as wikipedia puts it...

All is well, and all is well, and all a manner of things will be well.

I don't know how many of you are both UE'rs and gamers, but if you are you may have noticed a trend recently. A number of video games have gone a pseudo-realistic route in providing UE locations amongst the zombies, space marines, and very large guns.

The most recent I can recall that successfully evoked the feeling of UE would be:

Condemned: Criminal Origins
Condemned: Bloodshot
Call Of Duty 4 (almost and exact replica of Chernobyl and Pripyat)
F.E.A.R.
and
F.E.A.R. Files

I don't know how terribly relevant this is, but I thought it worth discussing, mostly due to the fact that a game will be releasing this year that revolves entirely around UE'ing and Parkour; Mirror's Edge.

As UE has become a passion of mine, so have video games, and the mingling of these genres of activities is a pleasure to see.

Just a thought, of course...

Many places I go to, are like levels straight out of Unreal Tournament. I loved that game when it came out, and every incarnation of it since. The UT engine is one of the best for sound and video, in my opinion. There is a Stargate game coming out supposedly built with the UT engine. I am looking forward to it.

I haven't actually played any games in a few years. Other than UT, I played (and despised) Farcry, but mostly just Age of Empires games with my ex-fiance and his friends. I kicked ass at UT though, and was often banned from playing so they could have a "fair" game (they felt I jumped around too much. Hey, they could jump too!)

Many pictures of factories and military installations look like they are from there, and it's quite fun to explore with that in mind.

In my area (Bay Area of Cali) there are a lot of explorers who have jobs in audio/video and photography so I haven't noticed many gamers.

I remember playing that for the first time when it was new....that game is scary to play. Very scary. Anyone hears you, you die. It gave me the most terrible anxiety I've ever had while gaming. "Did they see me?" type of fear, "did they hear me". You are right, very VERY UE.

Hell yeah. Some of those buildings, like the parliament buildings, were just amazing.

On a somewhat (un)related topic... someone on this forum once found an old warehouse full of old video games and pinball machines.

Where are you?

Some of those are worth their weight in gold.

Fallout was another incredible title...the first one, right? And please don't tell me you are referring to the abysmal Playstation version, Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout 3 just received a few confirmations that may excite you guys...200 endings! Can you imagine the exploring necessary and the plot twists available to allow for 200 endings? Oh, and also it has been confirmed that there exist 99 Vaults, all of which can be explored and function as "dungeons." That'll be some good UE...

I am actually playing a new release at the moment, Dark Sector, and there are some decent draining sequences in it.

I am ashamed to say I have never played Wasteland. It looks like an Apogee title, is it? Is is available via emulation...Commodore or something?

Oh, and Sudbury, you found a warehouse filled with delicious relics like that? How did you keep your hands off? My god man, I would have been in heaven...

I find that the younger kids (not that I am of an advanced age myself) these days have only an eye for graphics. I will admit I have more fun with ZSNES or MAME than I do with many current games or consoles. Has anyone ever played Slave Zero on PC? That also contained elements of UE.

Gears of War did have some incredible abandoned architecture, I will readily admit, though I was not incredibly impressed with it's almost total lack of story. There is much story to be had in the Gears universe, yet it fell through, with nary a paperback prequel/sequel/adaptation...
