Sounds a bit odd...video games and UE

I don't know how many of you are both UE'rs and gamers, but if you are you may have noticed a trend recently. A number of video games have gone a pseudo-realistic route in providing UE locations amongst the zombies, space marines, and very large guns.

The most recent I can recall that successfully evoked the feeling of UE would be:

Condemned: Criminal Origins
Condemned: Bloodshot
Call Of Duty 4 (almost and exact replica of Chernobyl and Pripyat)
F.E.A.R.
and
F.E.A.R. Files

I don't know how terribly relevant this is, but I thought it worth discussing, mostly due to the fact that a game will be releasing this year that revolves entirely around UE'ing and Parkour; Mirror's Edge.

As UE has become a passion of mine, so have video games, and the mingling of these genres of activities is a pleasure to see.

Just a thought, of course...

There was a thread here about movies and music videos with a "UE Feel" to them, and video games can have thematic elements that remind us of it in the same way those mediums can. I definitely see where you are coming from there, especially on Call of Duty, however I haven't gotten a similar vibe myself.

Mainly it's because no matter how much they work on "open world" gameplay I don't think it will soon match the "go anywhere, do anything" abilities of real world exploration.

Conversely, I don't expect to have to try dodge my way through a warzone just to check out an abandoned building (and thank God for that).

'Minimal collateral damage' and 'Entire star system' do not belong in the same sentence.

I will agree that the simulations in video games have not yet and may never match the thrill of exploring an actual location in the real world, but without those very simulations, certain locations would remain closed off to my interests.

With Call Of Duty in mind, consider Chernobyl. Yes, I can go to Youtube and watch a video of the exploration of Chernobyl, but the video game (after a careful sweep of the surrounding area, of course) allows me to access and view exactly what it is I find fascinating. The scans the devs made of textbooks and various other literature lying about allows me to virtually examine the specifics, rather than view only what the people recording the video on Youtube find interesting.

But, maybe it is just me.

And yes, I also agree, tis nice not to have to battle through untold legions to explore...whatever.

but a video game is not the exact replica of the area your playing in. You can't possibly experience Chernobyl just by playing Stalker.

I do agree with you, it is not a completely accurate representation; however, unless the Ukranian government allows me privileged access to these areas, the best I can do is experience them firsthand virtually.

I know that I can watch videos taken there, or view images photographed there, but actual exploration would prove to be quite beyond me...

Well, the Ukrainian government WILL give you access to the area. I have been once and I am going again. No excuse now. ;)

Really? I have done a bit of reading on the subject, and it seemed futile to attempt access through official means. I guess my excuses...well, are just that.

Now all I need is a way to the Ukraine...

How was it, if I may ask?

The city I am most interested in that is within my financial grasp is Centralia, PA. Hopefully this summer things will occur...

Official access is gained via a tour company. It's easy to arrange and flights to the Ukraine aren't a problem. There were a load of Americans on my flight from Paris, landing at Borispol airport in the Ukraine. It's cheap over there too.

The place is mint! A bit stripped in places but worth the trip I would say, which is why I am going back next month.

True, it is excellent, but All Ghillied Up and One Shot, One Kill on veteran are brutal...

About Khmer Rouge, that sounds intriguing. Any chance those photos survived and have been scanned?

Speaking of difficult and interesting locales, one I read about on this forum, yet has not been represented virtually is that pyramid-shaped hotel...Pyongyang?

Ah yes, Half-Life 2...great game. Silent Hill always intrigued me as well, which is why I may attempt a trip to Centralia, PA with my brother. Though not the sole basis of the Town of Silent Hill, it is reminiscent. Have you ever seen the pictures or read the history? Quite a good read, what with the coal fires burning deep underground to this day, and then great crevasses splitting the road. Ominous might be the appropriate word.

Silent Hill definitely. Playing through 2, I really, really, really wished I could visit some of the buildings in real life.

Also, Parasite Eve 1 and 2. The first one has an evacuated New York City (unfortunately limited, access-wise, to a hospital, police station, theatre, central park, museum, and a few more places) and the second has an entire mostly-abandoned town and an eerily empty scientific facility.

In one of the COD4 multiplayer maps you can go into a drain. It's just a small tunnel that goes underneath the no mans land between the spawn points.

I make love the same way I resolve arguments. With my fists.

Yeah, I recall the area. It can get pretty heated down there, with no line of site until you actually drop into the tunnel. I was huge into Call of Duty 4, until of course Rainbow Six Vegas 2...

Parasite Eve, that was one series I missed, sadly. I imagine even a limited New York in that state of abandonment would be cool.

As the first response stated, there was a thread previously discussing these themes and mediums. Aside from video games, has anyone read Creepers, or any of the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child books?

Creepers was actually the novel that got me started with UE. I was in the NAVY for a short time...I received a 97 on my ASVAB and was offered a position that was rather Secret Squirrel stuff, but alas, 5 weeks into RTC they discovered that I was diagnosed with OCD at the tender and moist age of 12...that spelled the end of things for me. So, I waited in the discharge ship, Ship 17, for about 4 more weeks waiting for my discharge, and read voraciously. One of these books was Creepers, and, so intrigued, I spent my last week and a half exploring a little bit of the old Ships, as well as the half-built Disney contracted Hurricane simulator.

I was never caught at RTC for these things, but I was bored. We were given fairly free reign, seeing as we were not quite civilians, and no longer sailors; as a bonus, access was easier because it was winter, which meant uniform was not the recruit ballcaps, but merely the black beanies. There were a few wonderful underground systems, a few of which I stepped over the grates of daily, but I didn't have the guts to go that far...

Wow, so that turned into a longer rant than I thought it would...

Creepers

I didn't like Creepers. It was just too outlandish for me. I think that's the right word for it.

I got an 86. Of course, I'm just a sophomore, so I'm pretty sure that it'll go up by the time I get to MEPS.

What branch are you joining, if I may ask? The ASVAB isn't nearly as difficult as people make it out to be, but to further complicate matters for myself, i was a High School dropout...please, don't go that route. It all ended well though, as the NAVY provided me with a formal Diploma...which they actually just handed me, rather than going the route of deserving it. The Petty Officers forgot I had to attend ACES, and thus when I received my discharge papers I was handed a Diploma as well. Unique, indeed.

But anyways, if you do join the NAVY you will be trained at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL, and believe me, there is some good UE to be had.

Oh, and Bioshock. An entire underwater city for you to explore, with simply beautiful architecture. What's more, they give you a camera. Unfortunately, you can't keep any of the pictures you take, especially since you're only supposed to take pictures of enemies. Didn't stop me though =P

Bioshock was beautiful. An Atlas Shrugged inspired game? Wonderous. Heres to hoping we get a Thus Spake Zarathustra inspired game next...oh, and concerning photography in games...what about Fatal Frame? An old, abandoned house, and the camera is your only weapon.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Deus Ex, my favorite video game ever! Tons of exploration there, specifically in NYC, Hong Kong, and even the Paris catacombs. You can buy it on steam for $10, worth every penny.

This is beautiful.
