I'm a huge fan of the Streamlight series, specifically the the Stylus Pro. It's tiny, comes with a belt holster that's extra convenient. It's also super bright and I'd trust it past a maglight for its footprint/size. http://www.streaml...oduct.aspx?pid=133 They also make a TwinTask model that does LED, xenon (mag-light style), and laser pointer to point stuff out. Also, if you're bringing water, either get something that can attach to a caribeaner and thus to your belt, or grab an Aqua clip - www.aquaclip.com to snap onto your belt and carry a water. I use Setwear gloves in my industry (filmmaking) and they make great glove clips. http://setwear.com/GloveClips.html I use them when I'm out with my older Home Depot gloves. They're thinner and get the job done. Around my belt I keep: water via aquaclip, gloves on clip, streamlight stylus pro, and a leatherman. Around my head I've got a Black Diamond spot LED. Anyway, I've got a few thoughts... first of all, imagine how much use I could get out of combining my air force/fighter plane obsession with exploration! It's a setup designed to be used not just in the air, but as a survival kit on the ground in case you happen to eject. Now that's what I call "perfect". Depending on the price, of course... Anyone got any experience with those, or, perhaps, why I shouldn't use one? LEDs are a lot more efficient and brighter, and you rarely even need to change the batteries. I'll probably settle for maybe a 12-LED flashlight or something... something super-bright that runs on batteries (and still uses, like, half the power of a dimmer "traditional" flashlight). LEDs do indeed produce heat, just much less than incandescent bulbs do for a given amount of light produced. The new, really bright LEDs are mounted on heatsinks that are often attached to an aluminium body to dissipate heat, and some can even get too hot to touch! These lights can run on AAs, and AAAs, but more often they use higher voltage batteries like CR123As. The low-voltage batteries like AAs are often run through a regulator circuit to boost the voltage to the LED itself, which provides other benefits, too, such as constant brightness until the battery is drained. Especially for draining, as metawaffle pointed out. My current crank-flashlight had the caps die, so one has to crank continuously whenever light is required... which means the whole lighting something so I can do something with my other hand is right out the window. But it was pretty decent for a few months before that. Crank for 30 seconds, 2minutes of bright light, a minute of usable light. Give it a shot if you think you might like it, just don't depend on it. I like everything to be well secured and to have easy access to all items. I probably carry some items that other explorers do not. I also avoid exploring in the spring and summer, so extra clothing (like a vest) does not bother me. I should also mention that I only explore buildings in rural areas.
