being a zombie might not be all that bad!
you don't have to worry about death and taxes!

Don't worry. Our government is working 'round the clock to find a way to tax the dead. I think I'd rather be Dracula and get those powers everyone's talking about :}

OK to summarize and add my 2 cents

Always:
-Common Sense and your Wits !

-Decent Footwear:
a thick sole with a good tread work boots are your best bet.
-long pants even in the summer, but dress for the weather...

-Cell phone (fully charged)
-a good Multi-tool or Swiss Army style pocket knife *
-Pocket Light (even if you don't think you'll need it)

-digital camera
-extra batteries

-bottle of water

Most Always:
-first aid kit
-Alcohol wipes (goes w/first aid, but otherwise useful) packets
-Allergy/Sting kit (if allergic)
-long sleeve shirt, even in summer (you can always roll up sleeves)
-Insect repellent (seasonal)

Situational:
-Decent flash lite (2/3 D-cell mag or equiv) *
-Dust mask: Home Depot $10, *
-Work gloves: w/ leather palms... Home Depot $5

Reconnaissance Missions:
-A plan, kinda know what your looking for
-An Open Mind, knowing your plan doesn't always cover everything
-Field Notebook (extra pencils)
-Tape Measure(s)/ Laser Tape
-Extra camera card (if you expect 2 take loads of pics)
-Extra batteries for whatever (camera, laser tape, flash light etc)

* No Dollar Store Crap (aka no Cheesy Chinese Crap )!!!

Wow, that covers a lot of bases...

I usually just go with an LED 4D Mag, my cam, and situational stuff. I do always have a first aid kit in my car, and if the place is huge, I would probably bring a bottle of water.

Ok I guess another person should be on the list. I always try to bring a buddy because of safety issues that can arise.

Also bringing a buddy means another pair of eyes to scan for materials to shoot, you can't do it all (though you'd like to believe so) and another person brings alternate perspective.

I guess I forgot to list another person because for me it's SOP.

I have a handheld CB thats about the size of a large walkie talkie. It has a retractable aerial that goes down to about 8 inches long. I keep that inside a PVC pipe so it doesn't get bent. My CB is really old; I'm sure you can get them much smaller now.

But what if your fellow explorer is trapped with you? Meh, maybe I'm just paranoid. Well OK, that's not a maybe. I'm probably the most cautious UEer you'll ever meet. Not that I'm too scared to do anything fun; it's just that I will always take absolutely every precaution possible before hand.

cool your cb sounds bad ass, altho thats the type of thing i usually wouldn't bring cuz i'd end up breaking or losing it!
im around construction sites all the time, not to say that something couldn't happen but i stay cautious and don't take stupid risks like when i was a kid!
(bullshit! i can too make a parachute out of a tarp and 2 broom sticks... and that roof isn't that high...)

Personally, I would question the usefullness of a CB radio.

Long gone are the days that you could pick up the CB and know that help will hear you.

And yes - never explore alone. I would recommend picking up a set of FRS radios. You can get them pretty cheap at Fry's/Target/Wal-Mart and the like.

I've been wondering if a pocket weather radio would work in a storm drain. Probably not, due to being 8+ feet under, and in a cement-lined bird cage...

but if it did work, it could be a nice little tool if the weather has a possibility of turning...
