i never have used a rope ladder, and frankly it's not *meant* to be used, it's just there if I need it. I usually only have/make gear if I have another use for it, or I've wanted it for a while (which is this case)

well, here's it all finished:

While being made:

All finished:

i have around 18 inches between the rungs, give or take 2 inches. It's about 22 feet in length total (from 100 feet straight rope). I hung it up in my tree as far as I could throw a rope to pull it over and tie (about 15) and it works great. Easy up and down, so long as you watch to make sure your feet get in. Quite happy with it, but it took about 5 hours to tie (longer at the beginning, looping all the slack through).

Wow that's pretty amazing! I personally have never found I needed anything like that, but it would have been useful for my friends!!!!!! I could climb up, latch that on, they follow, roll it up, no harm no foul.....

Awesome ladder. I can't think of a situation where it would actually be useful though, honestly... I wouldn't want to use a rope ladder to descend into anything (what if it broke and I got stuck?), and if you got stuck on top of something and needed to get down, you would have to already be carrying it. And who wants to carry a ladder everywhere?

I usually take a cheapo LED flashlight, phone, Leatherman, and decent camera + tripod. Even if I'm not shooting, cops and security are nicer to photographers that random trespassers/vandals/scrappers. Also beer is useful, for drinking. The homeless like cigarettes. I have a couple of big Maglites, some tools, and a crowbar in the trunk... they don't come out too often.

I can think of one good place for a crappy rope ladder. It would keep a good rope from being dropped in poop. This brings back memories....

BTW Mario, a figure 8 knot would be much safer than that clamp. That stuff is for wire rope, I use it on my tow truck. Sharp bends make a rope weaker at the knot. Also they do have caving and tactical ladders that are a bit spendy, but kick ass. They don't strech like crappy rope ladders. But I DO like a old school crappy rope ladder when in a pinch.

That's awesome. I've tied a short one just to play with the knots, but the amount of work needed to tie one out of 100' of 1/2"... A+.

it takes a long time at the beginning, pulling 50 feet of cord 10 times for one loop. You can see in my first picture that I used paper towel rolls to wind the rope and use that as a needle to pass it through. Other than that, I can just say sit down with a movie or music, and set to work.

update:

yea, I've been thinking of getting rid of that clamp, I didn't like how it was putting pressure onto the rope. It was more of a fast-fix to get the loop on than anything. Will be using the figure-8 loop instead. Thanks for the tip!

Very cool rope ladder! Wish I had you talent with knots! I didn't use mine yet. I finally found a new and easier access into the building I want to infiltrate. It's great to have the ladder handy, just in case. Mine takes a lot of space but at least it fits in my backpack. The funny thing is that I have no trouble whatsoever getting through a fence but my backpack is a bit of a hassle because it's larger than I am But you know how girls are : a backpack is the perfect substitute for a purse and we looove to pack 'em up with lots of just-in-case thingies that we never use : first aid kit, pepper spray, spare batteries, snacks, dust masks, whistle, etc.

knots aren't difficult at all... the only thing that experience brings is speed and memory really.
