Never UE alone its just dangerous and stupid.

Edit - added quote.

I definitely never explore alone. but what if you both get trapped? i know thats fairly unlikely (although not impossible) as far as falling through the floor goes, but what about getting locked in?

as far as being able to get help on a CB radio today, thats a good point. maybe if you are near a highway? and ive heard that some police stations and hobbyists still monitor the emergency channel. ::shrugs::

I've been wondering if a pocket weather radio would work in a storm drain. Probably not, due to being 8+ feet under, and in a cement-lined bird cage...

but if it did work, it could be a nice little tool if the weather has a possibility of turning...

My Sprint phone worked all the way thru the last drain I was in... I would guess that regular radio waves would make it that far as well. If you had issues...maybe it would be better around manholes?

Then again, you have a computer...There's always weather.com.

this is a little bit off topic...

but if you ever want to see through frosted glass, this trick will work if it's frosted on one side:

take some clear tape, and smoothly press it to the glass, and it should become transparent. This works best with more smaller pieces of scotch tape, as it's easier to work with, but I suppose that if you're careful clear shipping tape would work as well.

Yeah, but you and a buddy can both fall through a floor...
I wouldn't say 'never'-sometimes I can't find anyone to go with, and with my work schedule, it's not easy to plan around other people-sometimes I have to go at the spur of the moment. Plus, there are a lot of times I want to go by myself and not have to deal with the stress of having to look after someone else. A better rule is tell someone where you're going and how long you plan to be gone, or if possible, call them before you enter the location and again after you get out. That way they can take action if you're not back around the time you'd said you'd be done, or if they don't hear from you within a reasonable time after the entry call...but make sure they're o.k. with/can handle this responsibility 1st.
Oh, and Purell/Germ-X-is an explorers best friend!

Rope ladder?
<Reply # 86 on 6/23/2008 3:38 PM >

Hi,
I have recently designed a homemade rope ladder. I tested it at a local park on a fence and it seems pretty solid. What do you think about bringing a rope ladder along for ue in buildings (as opposed to drains and tunnels)? Do you think it could increase the risk of authorities pressing charges if I get caught? Any thoughts/concerns regarding safety? I would most likely leave it in the car and bring it only if I'm positive I'll need it to get into the building.

Thanks

lol, that's what I had thought, but with the trailing on about this becoming off topic and that you used to work for this one guy who....

rope ladders are a good idea. If I ever have a need for one I'm certainly going to go to the local hardware store and pick up some PVC and some floating rope. But they do have their limitations. I wouldn't suggest anything more than 15 feet on one... after that I'd much rather have a good rope for climbing. Something just doesnt seem right over that height, and this post at action squad backs it up (15? try 60 feet or ladder!)

http://www.actionsquad.org/cobbs.htm

plus it can get heavy, so a longer rope would be more energy efficient. Just make sure you have a good grip and don't try to climb while tired or rushed. Also throw in some knots to make it a little easier for going up.

Thanks for your comments. My rope ladder (see picture) is a little less than 15 feet long. I used the scout model (see drawing below) but I added three crochet hooks on a square plank, screw tighteners at the upper end of each rope for safety and I put ducted tape over each knot to secure them in place and over anything that could smash or injure anything or anyone (screws that stand out, screw tightener). I thought the duct tape would also muffle the clicking sound. The crochet hooks have a weight load limit of 40 lbs each -- I weigh only 112-113.

that's a pretty cool idea actually... I'd personally prefer something different than what you used, but mounting hooks onto it is something I'd never have thought of. I might need to have some of my coworkers cut me up some scrap 1/4" L brackets for some heavy duty hooks.

thats a cool ladder,
pvc pipe has a weakness- if its hit, smashed or dropped it can shatter, especially if the pipe its self is cold. also pvc pipe gets weaker or fragile as it gets older. your ladder is cool but you might want to use something other then pvc pipe. maybe some dowling...

I use etriers, which are essentially a rope ladder used by mountain climbers. I like it because it takes up less space and I have no load-strength worries. It's also simpler to climb than just a rope for when I bring newbs along.

As for a hook, I use threaded pipe segments and a collapsible pole. Custom hooks would be nice though, especially if you could get sets made in a few different sizes. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks everyone. BTW, I didn't use pvc pipe, if you look closely, you'll see that I used round wooden planks. I didn't want to use square planks because I thought the rope would have more grip on round ones. Also pvc is more slippery. The only downside I found so far is that the top part takes a lot of space and I need to find just the right backpack to carry it without having to aim at a gigantic 60 L bag! Thanks again.

I just demo'd a ladder with 3/16" rope using this method:

http://www.geociti...oo_two/ladder.html

scary as hell climbing it (so thin), and it takes about 15-20 minutes per rung at that size, but it's strong as hell. I'm prob. gonna make a full scale ladder using this method.

Cool! At first, I wanted a rope ladder made with nothing but rope, but I couldn't find any model on the internet. I absolutely needed a model because I suck at making knots. What are you going to use as a hanger at the top? I doubt that tiny hole at the top is going to fit anywhere.

Good luck in the making!

well, first I tried with an inverted noose. Worked, but after climbing on it it tightened so much that it became a hassle to get off. So then I tied an alpine butterfly.

http://www.chockst...Tips/Butterfly.htm

It was an improvement, but the rope could still wear away. So when I bought the 1/2" today, I picked up some hardware for the top, which I'm sure will work quite well once I wrap it in electrical tape so it doesn't bang:

update:

the 1/2 inch is VERY difficult to wrap tightly like this (imagine tying 15-20 sideways nooses, but having to pull 50 feet of stiff rope through the vertical sections for every wrap. Not fun. Just wrap your two ends around something and pass that through, and unwrap them when you have to feed it through the eyes in the end of the rungs.

You do know that they are sold as emergency fire escape ladders, with a high weight load, different lengths, and different types of hooks/ attachments? I have them at my country house. Never thought to use them UE'ing tho, and I'm not sure where they are sold, I got them at a home show in Vermont. They were quite affordable.

I’m quite positive that you’ve slept with someone uglier than me, and I’m sure I’ve slept with someone hotter than you. So let’s just call it a draw.
