| | | Yeah, everything's been a bit scarce for me lately. Tuesday is the only free day I've gotten in about a year and that's a true story. So I feel ya.

| | | I've updated the Event Listing with the following suggestion. Any thoughts?
Alcohol seems to be a common interest among the DFW crowd, so we're shifting to someplace that has it in quantity. The Goat 7248 Gaston Avenue Dallas, TX 75214 (south side of Gaston, just west of Grand) Phone: 214-327-8119 http://www.pegasus...m/places/the-goat/ Meet up when they open at 3pm. That'll give us maximum time to enjoy $1.75 longnecks and $2 wells. There's a takeout pizza joint next door that looks pretty delicious, so it should be a winner all around. It's a small joint, so it should be pretty easy to find the UE bunch. But feel free to belly up to the bar and ask for Amanda Hugankis. It sounds better than asking for a Buttery Nipple. Fallback plan in case anyone under 21/18 shows up: probably Popeye's Chicken across the street. But I don't think there's a doorman until after 10pm. Just don't act like a kid. (That's asking a lot, I know.)

Also, I found this while looking around pegasusnews.com:

It's the 2nd Sat of every month, or supposedly, I don't think anyone was there last time, but I said goodbye to the bear 2 days later, and then again the next day....goooood pizza... I'm down with The Goat, I like beer, and if anyone here in our df dub meet up isn't, they are probably trader yankees from anywhere but Texas..lol I'm there, see y'all then.

| | | Still on for The Goat, in the hopes that the lure of alcohol and darkness will bring in more of the UE crowd. 3pm Saturday. And in the typically ironic twist of fate, I may not make it myself. My daughter's in from college for the weekend, and I don't know if she can sneak in. (She probably can, though... girls can get away with *anything*. Not that anyone is complaining.)

| | | There are three things I do badly:
- Manage money, which is no big deal because of number 2.
- Obtain a job that pays money.
- Drive in Dallas
No matter: Live in funky town for any length of time and you will find yourself in Dallas traffic -- all according to the whim of the great magnet. It seemed simple enough: I was to drive a mint green 1990 Suburban with colorful tropical fish painted all over it up Hulen to pick up PKRearden, his camera, and his huge Irish Jaw. Then we were to make our way down I30, up Grand, hang a left on Gaston and infiltrate some abandoned goat farm. But things began turn ugly when we cleared Grand Prairie. Traffic was stopped, for no readily explainable reason, from loop 12 to industrial. To make matters worse some fuck waffle in a puce colored Saab stopped across three lanes to take photos the Dallas skyline shrouded in fog. Pk, normally a bastion of calm, crawled out the passenger side window and while hanging from the roof rack hurled cans of greasy, spoiled biscuit dough at the Swedish monstrosity. The cans sounded like a shotgun going off in a tin shack as each one exploded in a gooey mess covering the back light of the Saab. Honestly, anything is an improvement to one of those things -- but the owner didn't think so and drove it into the median to get away from us. Eventually we made it the Grand Ave exit and headed north, past Gaston, White Rock Lake, and most of Dallas. At this point I gave up. I handed my guy card to PK and called for directions. A film maker friend of mine lives in Dallas so he would be my life line: "Hey Eric, are you busy right now?" "Yeah. I'm bulding a space ship inside the Continental Gin Building." "Cool, say, I'm supposed to be going to the goat ranch thing on Gast'n, and went went north on grand for a while, but things don't really look right. I think I went to far. The street signs are labeled in the Cherokee Syllabary, and we keep seeing grass fires everywhere." "Ah...Yeah, you're in Oklahoma. You need to turn around and head south for a while. It's actually supposed to be in Texas. Oh and it's pronounced Gas-taawn, not Gas-ton." Despite our total disregard of traffic safety the journey back to the Gaston seemed to take longer. PK was going through nicotine withdrawals and his mood was turning foul. We were out of Biscuit dough and every driver in Dallas seemed determined to make us later than we already were. We finally found a place labeled the Goat and started searching for a way in. I don't want to post entrance details but look for a sign that says "No Smoking". Whoever suggested this place must not have been there recently, it's still an active site. There was a table full of bearded men wearing motorcycle club colors. I figured they probably weren't it. We were standing there trying to adjust our eyes to the light and we were approached by a man I can only assume was the bartender. I believe this to be the case because he appeared to be tending bar. "You guys must be looking for that secret group of urban explorers." "Er yeah. we seem to be a bit late." "There was one feller showed up, hung around for a while and left. You just missed him. See you next month." We went on to explore the area pawn shops, looking for photo gear. One shop had a Contax with a Zeiss lens, but they want what a Contax camera with a Zeiss lens was worth. We went on to fight our way through a gang of mods in deep ellum for burgers at the Angry Dog, but that's another story. Any chance we could do this in Fort Worth next time? Or hey, the Angry Dog has booze, food, and big tables. Maybe there next time?

| | | Then you would have been the one blocking 3 lanes of traffic to take pictures! I tend to block traffic every time I go to Dallas. My truck has trouble going 65 mph and Dallas drivers do not seem to appreciate that.

| | | That was, without a doubt, the awesomest meetup I haven't seen. I got blindsided by fate, kids, and the power of God (I'm in a church play and they picked Saturday for rehearsal). How about Arlington for the next meetup? A friend of mine is in the band Waiting for One, awesome Texas-flavored rock, mostly electric, some acoustic. They're going to be playing at Primo Coffee in Arlington on Saturday, March 13. That's at Green Oaks & Collins -- last time we met in that area, we had a very cool field trip to an abandoned mountain retreat, of sorts. The show is at 8-10, so we might meet up before and then go hiking. I'd jump all over a meetup in Fort Worth, either downtown or at the Stockyards, both of which provide numerous extracurricular opportunities. But we've done that twice before, and the only people who showed up came from Dallas. Maybe I've been making it too easy -- maybe it takes a challenge to bring the UE crowd to a meetup. Looks like it worked last Saturday!
