| | | How to obtain site info on uer without pissing off people. < on 3/6/2007 11:36 PM >
| | | So I'm tired of new folks coming on and asking about specific sites by the actual site name. There are ways to get information without publicizing a place to those who don't already know about it. The two best ways are: 1) Actually driving to a location and looking around for yourself. 2) Google and when that fails... 3) Sending local exploring veterans a private message. I personally have no problem in extending a helping hand...but only in a private message. Please do not put up public threads asking about a specific place and refering to it by its actual name. If you must ask questions about a place in a forum, you can do so without letting the rest of the world know about it... Try blurring the lines a little bit by being descriptive about the site without using it's actual name...people who know places will be able to recognize them from a well written description without the sites actual name. Example...I was heading north on 95 from Boston and I saw this castle looking thing on the hill up on the left...anyone know what that is? Or...put up a photo (you can find these on google image search if you don't have your own photos) and ask if anyone recognizes and knows about the place. The people who do know will recognize the building, and the people who don't know...won't know. Yes...its retarded that some of us are so touchy about publicizing sites...but when you see places get destroyed or secured that were untouched prior to UER publicizing...its a normal reaction.

Yes, this thread is just begging to be sticky'd. Anything to cut down on bitter old-timers ripping into and scaring away new people for asking questions.

It's getting so that you see those type of posts once a day. Many times from 1-3 day members.
I suggested a waiting period of a week where newbies would be restricted to posting in the Rookies section only. To cut down on bad posts and threads in the other sections, and to make it easier for the mods, and Av to keep an eye on things. That would also help cut down vicious unwarranted attacks by FMs by helping to eliminate these one day trolls. Better for everyone.

| | | Well, the problem with waiting periods is that they punish everyone. A couple years ago, we had this thing on UER called the Entrance Quiz. After creating your account, you had to answer a quiz of 10 multiple-choice questions. The questions were all based on things in the rules or terms of service (which you were supposed to have read) and confirmed that you knew about the search feature, how to use the site, etc etc. It worked great to educate newbies about the site, but it had a side effect of also offending people who didn't consider themselves newbies, even if they had never read the rules. A lot of people ended up leaving UER because of that. I feel that your request would have a similar result.

| | | I can see your point. I'm not found of jumping through hoops just for the fun of it. The flip side is that someone can simply join, and troll the hell out of the site one minute after they do. I suppose the dedicated trolls would simply wait a week, but it would make it harder. It would shutdown "heat of the moment" trolls trying to rip into specific thread. In any case all I was proposing was that they would be restricted to posting in the Rookies section only, but would be able to browse the other sections as they can now, just not post. Av, you have much more experience at this than myself, so your probably right.

| | | a filter or two is exactly what is needed. this site is becoming less and less of a resource since anyone can come in off the web...and anyone does come in off the web. thus...its impossible to really talk about anything because you don't know who's watching. I don't trust this website. i haven't even been here a year yet and i regret my database entries. i wish there were more filters to keep out assholes, sketchballs, cops/security, and drama queens. i think the idea of this website is great...having an online resource and a place to chat with other explorers...but...without a good filter system in place...it really deters those of use who dedicate a huge portion of our lives to exploring from really participating and respecting the website. i wish mod's would delete all the posts from folks asking for hand-outs...or outing a location in the public forums. i wish mod's would delete the bullshit drama threads that get started...not just individual posts...but just the whole thread. i wish there was a better system for filtering through those who want access to the site. but...those are just my ideas. i've totally become one of the cranky uer members in a very short period of time. i used to despise those types of members...and now I am one. i think as of recent i've spent more time on here responding to poorly thought posts and new member shit than anything else. i just wish that if someone is posting without common sense...that the mods would just delete the post. those who don't consider themselves newbs and thus don't want to go through a newb trial period don't deserve to have access...because they are obviously too concerned with their ego and less concerned with keeping exploring something that is possible to do.

| | | I would be all for a waiting period, it probably would have kept me from inadvertantly pissing people off with my first post. I think a lot of people are probably like me, we get all jacked up on the thought of UE for one reason or another and want information as fast as possible. It would be good to have a system in place to put the brakes on. Another board I am on restricts new accounts to just viewing for five days, and it has worked out well (also helps slow down people looking to create multiple accounts).

I fail to find the flaw in the above logic. Having just said that the above make sense. I feel I would be remiss if I didn't point out how much Cr*p/Flak Avatar-X would probably get if he instituted these policies. I would have no problem with them, nor do I think any clear thinking individual would, however the accusations of being an elitist snob would probably begin to fly as soon as some people got wind of it. (When I say elitist snob THAT would also probably be the nicest thing the angry folks would call him.) [last edit 3/16/2007 11:28 PM by CaptOrbit - edited 1 times]

Jeeeeesze, it's not like having to wait seven days, or even say 3 days, is going to be busting caps into someone's balls. There's plenty to do now in the Rookies section. I doubt you'll hear many of the current members would complain, but I may be mistaken. So far it would seem so. A filter would also keep current members from "recruiting" outside trolls into threads. A certain member who just got their FM with my blessing, had his face almost bite off by me when he first joined. He happened to post in a heated thread, and although he meant no malice, it didn't seem so at the time to me A couple days would have probably made a difference, and I certainly would have been less suspicious of his motives. Timing is everything... I thought the concept was fair as it protects not only FMs from one day trolls, it also helps insulate the Basic members from them as well. It still allows interaction though on the member's first day, except it's to one section. My suggestion didn't seem too heavy handed to me, but it's not my site or my vision of what it should be or how it should work. It's that code hacking wolf's site; Av

| | | New forum member here, longtime adventurer ( feel like i'm at an AA meeting) I agree with the sentiment about not publicizing. Wish I could go back and delete some of my posts, b/c I totally didn't consider the govt agents/etc that are likely trolling this board. Dangit. But, as a socal guy, the vast majority of communication I have with any fellow uers will be netbased; there's just no one out here. So I suppose (once i've earned my stripes) I'll PM you dudes for specific info. Safer? maybe.

Much. I think if Av were ever even going to think of instituting a filter like the one suggested, he would like to know it has popular support amongst the members.
