Well I have been here over a month, coming here a new explorer and kept my questions to myself. I do all my own sites, do all my own leg work and then try to share what I find here. I am not going to ask around for specifics until I "earn my stripes", which hopefully I am working towards. But what I'm having trouble with is what exactly do I have to do around here to earn my stripes. It seems like you only get a full membership here if you know the mods, and while I am doing as much exploring, posting, updating, ect.. as I can I still dont know the mods very well. Does this leave me SOL or what?

You don't have to be pals with a mod(s) to get your FM.
Some people get ticked if you brown nose them.
Posts more pics of UE, contribute meaningful posts and threads to the forum.
Also post more pics. think...Industrial

In addition to what blackhawk said, I've also read that popping into chat once in a while to help mods and other members get to know you can be helpful.

Posting leaves a record of your comments, good or bad.
When FMs don't see posts and threads, it's greatly lowers your chances of getting approval.
You want all the members to see your here, not just the mods.
I would concern myself with what your posting, or not, rather than dwell of getting your wings.
Besides this is part of the puzzle.

I'm new, actually just joined yesterday on the forum, and have never "officially" gone exploring anywhere more interesting than a house out in the country. I can definitely understand the sentiment about new people just coming on and asking stuff like, "how do i get into *so-and-so place*, what kind of security, need info kthx." I think that would probably annoy me too if I had been doing this for a while, as it is probably a lot of work and time searching around for places, etc.

But at the same time, I really have no idea what I'm doing or how to even start getting into exploring. I don't have any pictures to gain someone's trust, since I've never been before, and I don't really know anyone personally who goes exploring, even informally. I mean, I'm definitely not going to act like a prick and bother people about locations, but it's kind of hard to get into this whole thing with very little experience besides reading some of the posts here and other sites. So for me, it seems like it will be hard to even get my feet wet. Just thought I'd add a perspective to the discussion; most others seem to have been exploring before they joined here, but I'm a total n00b.

my sentiments exactly. I have found that if you share your new found fascination with a friend it will bolster your confidence. Seeing them as interested in UE as I am was a great impetus. We are planning on going draining in C-Springs. Word is that C-Springs is all about drains.

P.S. I ordered "Access All Areas" on recommendation from you folks, so hopefully that will give me some info and more knowledge about the subject in general.

mines' on its way. When I get it we can start a book club and share our thoughts and feelings about it and cry and hug and...whoops, where'd that come from?

1. Don't register and ask "hi, can I go to the meet, so I can see the locations?", "ne1 know of cool locations in <my area>??" or other equally dumb question as the first post with 12 solid hours of membership under belt.

I still feel somewhat new, but if it helps anyone out there that is newer than myself, here is what I did, (not that I planned it this way... it just happened this way) and it seemed to work well for me.

When I first registered with UER I just read... ALOT. After getting the feel for what people post where, I started doing the same. I didn't ask for locations, but posted pictures of what I found. Turns out, half the places I posted pictures of were already current locations and locations the regulars had seen many times before, but I suppose it showed the other members that I was doing stuff on my own. Even though they had already seen similar pictures of the same old locations, they understood it was new to me, saw my excitement at finding it and gave me really good input. After awhile, I got some invites to go exploring with a few full members, and that was that.

Hope this helps.

I think far too often people become so overwhelmed by the quality or the attraction to certain sites that they see on UER that they forget that, originally, these sites were found with a little research and a little more footwork.

Now- I know it's easier for those of us in urban areas to throw a stone and hit anywhere from 10-20 abandonments in a mile radius. For those of you in the country, your abandonments may be fewer and farther between, but they're often easier to access and sometimes span across far greater distances (I've seen some incredible photos from old barns/slaughterhouses/grain silos that you just can't match with the burned out rowhouses that are so common to us.)

So while I understand and empathize that starting off and "gaining the trust" of other members may be hard, and you may not have much under your belt, it's often the fact that you got out, and you walked, and you found something. Yeah, the overgrown railroad ties in your backyard may not be the next state hospital, but they're a start. Some of us were lucky enough to realize that (literally) in our backyard, down a hill and up the ravine was a semi-abandoned asylum. Others weren't. I'm not going to discuss the politics of full memberships, and I barely understand them myself, but going to meets is a great way to introduce yourself to fellow explorers.

People have been exploring before the internet- it's a nice tool to help you discover sites through historical records and readily accessible files- but it's not the only way. I am however incredibly encouraged by seeing so many newcomers with no star or a one month star showing so much initiative.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.

I propose we institute a new forum. A UER Boot Camp.

Leave everything that is now open to the public as open to the public for reading, but when someone wants to join the community as an active participant, they go to the UER Boot Camp.

The moderators of UER Boot Camp? Blackhawk, KublaKahn, White Rabbit, Jonsered, tunnelbug, and me.

After registering, new members can only see the UER Boot Camp forum, we treat them like shit and drill them on things they should know. Ideally, we could actually wake them up when they're asleep and harass them, but I'm not sure if ActiveX supports that technology. Sure, they could just log out and go see the public parts of UER, but they can only post when they are in UER Boot Camp.

They would have to learn that everything they do here can be seen by police; that they should try to find locations on their own, maybe even with some advice on how to do it, if they need it; and that they need to make a positive impression on people before they can be trusted.

When a new user is able to impress the UER Boot Camp mods with his leet skillz respect for UE, he can move up to big boy UER.

The flip side is that someone can simply join, and troll the hell out of the site one minute after they do. I suppose the dedicated trolls would simply wait a week, but it would make it harder. It would shutdown "heat of the moment" trolls trying to rip into specific thread.

In any case all I was proposing was that they would be restricted to posting in the Rookies section only, but would be able to browse the other sections as they can now, just not post.

Av, you have much more experience at this than myself, so your probably right.

The similarities between this and the waiting period for firearm purchases is great... I second the motion and propose that newbies are only allowed semi-autos up to 9mm.

Anybody know how well the waiting period for firearms worked out? Do people still kill each other with guns, or did that problem go away? I can never remember these things....

I've been on this site for less than a month, and I'm not all that worried about getting FM. I mean I would love it, and it would be useful, but I totally understand why I DON'T have it, and I figure it would be way easier to try and prove myself then to go around asking for it.
The first thing I did here was read. Alot. I know I've posted stupid stuff, and some horrible pics. But I figure some horrible pics bring me closer to a FM than asking someone for it would. It at least shows I'm interested in exploring and will go out and do it.
As for the waiting period, I totally agree. It would help alot. Even being new to this site I've read a post and just rolled my eyes. Or seen the same question 3 posts in a row.
But then again, as BlackHawk said, it isn't our site to run, so we mise well make of it what we can.
To become a full member there's really only one way I can see. Read. Post.
But that's just my opinion.

On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Exactly, i don't see why people can never just check places out for themselves. That's 95% of UE, you've gotta find your own damn locations.

However, sometimes it's nice to already have something you can count on. Exploring isn't just all about finding needles in haystacks, if there's a place that catches your eye, new or not, there's no shame in shooting a question or two to someone. That's actually how I met and started exploring with PunkUE, who is a great guy, and a blast to hang around and explore with.

I know I've said it before, but discretion is key. If something is really worth asking, go for it. Just don't be stupid about it.

Yeah i do agree with what you're saying. I think that quite a few people get into UE from hearing about abandonments from friends. Hell, i know that that's how it started for me. I guess what i meant earlier was if you've already been exploring for a while, try to do as much personal observation of the location as you can, then ask for help. But yeah, make sure it's a legitimate question, and not something that's gonna piss everyone off.

Kind of funny, because I'm a complete noob when it comes to exploring. Never even been before, really (other than when I was a little kid and checking out some areas in the rocky mountains in Colorado). I came across the Titan Silos in the database and that really opened my eyes to the area I live in. I have been noticing buildings and nooks and crannies around town that may or may not be great places to check out. I am just intimidated by the idea of getting strung up by local authorities. I have no idea how to avoid bad situations when exploring. This forum seems like a great resource for anyone who knows a little about the hobby, but it's hard to keep track of all the etiquette involved with this site. It seems like you can read the FAQ's and guidelines and rules all you want and someone will still get pissed off at you for saying something stupid. Which (here I am saying something stupid probably. lol) it is not my intent to attack anyone, but I am just throwing it out there that it is hard to tell what not to say when you are completely new to the hobby and the forum. Posts like this really help, but I think that a general, specific sticky thread dedicated to what noobs should NOT post would help a great deal in avoiding these situations.

Just my thoughts on the subject,
MM

Back in the 80's and 90's, it was a pretty often phrased as "Lurk before posting." UER's current 7 day waiting period also encourages that, although not explicitly.

The point was, community members couldn't take the time and trouble to welcome every new person and give them a little lesson about what the community expects and tolerates. It was up to the newbie to learn for themselves from observation, and then not make an ass of themselves. If you were unable to judge for yourself what the acceptable behavior was, then you had no right to not expect rudeness in return.

So anyway, that's the way it used to work. Nowadays, you young whippersnappers and all of your instant gratification tomfoolery are bringing about the end of civilized society.

BTW, drummer2k7, practice hiding from the cops, even when you're not doing anything wrong. At the very least, it provides a few minutes of fun. That is, if you can pull yourself away from your "video games" and "rap musics" and "M3P players."
