Hi people,
Sepia here, 31/M/Lake Macquarie, NSW, Australia.
I have been running around, exploring places pretty much all my life. But never seem to get to go through old buildings often enough. After recently reading a book called "Creepers" by David Morrel, I have decided that this has to change, and buildings are getting put first on the list (bush being at a close second).
Armed with nothing more than a Led Lenser p17 torch, and 2 cheap cameras (Richo 10mp 5x & a Fuji 9mp 4x) I hope to share some of the nicer pics and places with you guys.

See you soon,

Sepia.

Oh Noes!!! IT'S ANOTHER NOOB!!!

Hi, I'm Erin. I'm new here and just wanted to say hello. I've been really interested in exploring more areas in WNY with some friends lately and I thought joining this community would be a good idea.

Happy spring!

Hi I'm chelsea! I'm glad to have found this site and I'm looking forward to contributing to and meeting people from this site!

When I was in high school a group of us would get photo passes and go off campus during first period. We would find places around town, old houses, factories, libraries. We'd get back to school just in time for photography class to develop our findings. Just until recently I didn't know there was a huge community of people who enjoyed doing this!

I had a photographer friend send me this site as a resource for spots to shoot. Finding this site had re opened the door of exploring!!! I'm excited to find new places around my town to shoot and Im even more excited to share the places I have already found!

Hello everyone. Cerealx59 here from the fabled Minneapolis, Minnesota area.

I have been exploring since I can remember. When I was a little kid I had an undying affinity for running through the woods, as I am sure most adolescent boys do. I always loved the closed in privacy of the forrest, like it was my own little universe, and I was the king. (a feeling that I still get during long underground missions)

When I was about 13 years old I started hearing about a place that was locally referred to as "the northdale chambers." which later turned out to be just a small crawl sized drain system on the property of a local middle school, which certain types of kids used to go into to get the thrill of smoking pot on school property. Those of you from the area may be laughing about the mythical 7th chamber!
Anyways this was the first time that the thought of draining ever occured to me. Little did I know that there may actually be large systems out there.(This was pre the Internet being an everyday thing.)

About 2 years later I had heard from a friend of mine that there was a larger tunnel system being used by a near bye high school, which we explored for about an hour and it turned out that it was just a sub-terrainean graveyard for old urinals which lay beneath the football field.

About a year later a friend of mine sent me a link to the now Infamous Peter Sands "Minneapolis Drain Archive." Of course the original content of which is now no longer available. (Only the later missions, which include the Schieks Cave adventure, are still posted.) Needless to say I read them backword's and forwards, and I remember being so excited that there was real mazes of large systems out there, and I knew that I simply had to explore them. After a summer of exploring the east bank and west bank tailraces, Including the Pillsbury Canal, on one side and the Gold Medal Mill on the other (pre destruction and condoizing) we became very, very familiar with these systems. During the winter of that year we decided that we were bored and hungered to broaden our underground horizons.
Mid January 1997, under the guise of college students working on our "senior thesis"(which was particularly funny because none of us were older than 19) we spent about a week at the Public Works offices off of 4th downtown, studying sewer and tunnel maps, and making as many copies as we could afford. (they charged .50 cents a copy) Over the coming months we decerned the difference between drain tunnels, and sewer tunnels, of which none of us were too interested in, and have tried desperately to avoid whenever possible since then. Maps in hand we were very ready for spring.

For the next three years or so we rocked it hard, real hard. Going whenever we could get 2 or more of us together. And during the day spending alot of our time "river banking" which is what we called searching the river banks for new outfalls and systems, caves, and random homeless communities. In the warm months over the span of 3 years, on one bank or the other we covered about 75 miles of shore on the Mississippi, and Minnesota Rivers, "Discovering" all kinds of drain tunnels and old sewer outfalls.

In 1999 while revisiting the NSP tunnels, of east bank tailrace fame, we were able to penetrate the fabled "vault door" at the end of the water main tunnel after all the bridges, which lead to us penetrating a sub basement of the power plant, which lead to us scrambling in the dark running as fast as possible in the ape position, after being discovered and chased by power plant security. About a week later we returned and discovered the "vault door" had been resealed. During our return mission, for the first time, we encountered other explorers in the tunnels. At first we killed our flashlights and tried to hide. After a few awkward "Hellos" and "We are not security, are you?" We began to talk and they began to tell us about where they just came from, and they called it "Chutes Cave." Now we had seen "Chutes" on the maps we obtained but we had not a clue how to get into it. They told us how, and although we had been in the Pillsbury tunnels many, many times we never new that the crack in that wall went anywhere, we just assumed that it was a small area that bats lived in. Later that same night we were on our way. Now we went back to Chutes about 10 times in the next two years and as far as we know we were the first ones to carry an uninflated boat into the "deathcrack", and boat to the end of Chutes Tunnel, which included letting half the air out with us in it, to make it those last few feet. The collapsable oars we accidentally left in the cave were later seen in the west bank tailraces accompanying the now famous "raft". The rope we forgot in the cave was never seen by us again.

In 2001 we were made aware of the Action Squad web site through a friend of a friend that actually knew "Max Action". Now at the time we felt betrayed and upset by the website. We had a very distinct feeling that we were the "kings" of our underground "kingdom", and that this site allowed the "peasants" too much information.

In response we decided to name our group "The Path", and we considered ourselves the main competition for the Action Squad, swearing to do whatever they did (most of which we had already seen) better and more hardcore than them. Although we toyed with the idea of putting up a website of our own, we decided that it would go against what we "stood for".

Now a couple years ago our friend of a friend showed us the dvd for "Urban Explorers- Into the Darkness". An argument arose between us, after seeing the face of Max Action, myself and another friend agree that one of those explorers we ran into, which told us about the Chutes Cave entrance, was in fact Max Action! Now there are a couple of us that disagreed, but I am sure that it was him. Now this revelation forced me to rethink my stance on Max Action, and the A-Squad, and after alot of maturing I came to the conclusion that we were not all that different after all. Here was another group of kids, not too dissimiliar from us doing the same things, for damn near the same reasons, and the key difference was only that they wanted to show the world how hardcore they were, while we just wanted to be hardcore and have our Kingdom.

Now many years have passed since we were in full operation, the group has split up due to aging, and jobs, and marriage, and just plain drifting. But we will always have the time we spent together, when we ruled over our "kingdom".

Recently I have felt the itch to get back out there, and have done some "river-banking", with a close friend (who is new to UE), which is what lead me back to the web, and ultimately to this site.

Sorry for the rather lengthy introduction, but I wanted to fill you in with my background. I have alot of experience, and some photos(some of which may be spread out between former Path members), so I hope to be a major contributor to this forum.

I find myself humbled by the large amount of people that still enjoy one of the things I have loved the most in my life.

hey guys. 25/m from new zealand, always been vaguely interested in old buildings, primarily for the architecture. stumbled across an urbex site on the net and realised that the history of empty buildings is just as interesting, and the idea of seeing things that most people don't think about and will never check out appealed.

Hi there! I have moved to Montreal a little more than a year ago now, from Belgium. By the way I have some pretty cool pics from an abandoned factory and children's hospital in Belgium should post them soon. I am looking for an easy spot to get started here in Montreal with urbex. If one of you could tell me exactly where to go and how, that would be great. Thanks!

Greetings UEers,

I currently live in Birmingham Alabama, but I had lived all my life in Tennessee up until last summer. Although I am fairly new to urban exploration, and have not visited many locations it has become quite a significant interest for me. Photography is also one of my hobbies. Hope to exchange ideas and get to know some of you.

Hi everyone!
I'm from Melbourne, Australia and hoping to meet others in the same area for UE trips. I have already registered with the Cave Clan for their new explorers expo (can't wait for it!)
I have only so far checked out a couple of abandoned houses, and on Saturday will be attempting some light-painting in Melbourne's Anzac drain
I'm glad I discovered this site as there is a lot of good info and stories here, not too mention many cool photos!

Hey everyone!

Davis is the name, from Orange County area, California. I've always been into exploring the world around me, but am not so good at locating new places to explore sometimes, unfortunately.

Due to my line of work though, the places I've been to I have never really had any problems getting into (I work Security). Thanks to my job, most of the construction sites or abandoned buildings I work with I can simply walk into, and me taking pictures is always "a-ok" with my bosses. A perk, you could say.

Anyhow, after having seven days of being mute, I'm nervous about saying something I shouldn't, so I'll stop here in case I've said too much!

Nice meeting you all.

Hello everyone,

I live in Maryland, not too far from DC and I’ve been checking out abandoned buildings and properties off and on for the past 20 years. I don’t get as many chances to go and check out these places these days, but I stumbled across this great site and decided to join.

Of course you are remembered! Welcome back.
