I'll take a Streamlight Stylus Pro any day. It's tiny and bright as hell. Lasts hours about 7 hours.

I'm a flashlight nerd, my suggestion is to just cary a bunch that are bright. I just picked up an LED that is a tripod light that works good for lighting areas, but sucks for pics of course. My suggestion would be to go to home depot, wal mart, target or any place like that and buy a variety or anything that is reletively cheap (50 bucks or less), I personally try to avoid anything that uses expensive batteries. I also use a rechargable Streamlight but it sucks when the power starts to dip on it.

I like my old 3D-Cell MagLite. It has gaskets everywhere so it's water proof (or it should be), I can focus the beam, and it hurts like hell when you get hit by the back end of it. Plus I got it free from a friend who didn't need it for anything.

I don't like LED; I've used them a few times and I find that it can be seen for a long distance but can't light up a room as well as incandescent, and the light from LED gives me a headache (and not just if I stare into one).

I like my headgear that I usually use for cave exploring. "look security, no hands"

I have a 4D maglite that I replaced the reflector, lens and bulb, and grip taped the hell out of. I love it. I can get 10+ hours of light brighter than a krypton bulb, and the beam is split for both throw and flood at the same time. Then I made a mini-light inside a bottle cap and stuck that into the bottom of it if I suddenly go dark and need to change batteries.

Kinda heavy tho, so I'm looking to buy a pocket light as well.

Anything LED for exploration, but for light painting, I much prefer incandescent...

Agreed, incandescent is way better for painting you get a far better spread, LED is too much of a bright spot no matter what you do.

For backup I use a little 2AA-Cell MagLite about as long as a pen and as round as my thumb.

You can diffuse the beam to remove the spot, but of course that absolutely kills the throw.

Love my 2-Cell AA I always take two with me but I'm looking into getting a 4 D-Cell much brighter.

Yeah I know what you mean, and agreed on that point as well

You guys and your maglites. I don't understand the appeal. They're not at all compact, not very bright when compared to other lights out there and go through batteries a lot faster too. On the other hand, I guess they do make you look cool or something though.

The appeal for me, is that it can also be used as a weapon. I have been hit in the head with a maglite before on accident, it left a pretty damn big bump. If I crack you over the head with it, you're going down.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot how often explorers get ambushed by violent criminals while exploring. Good thinking!

Don't mind him SirJinx...We are not all anal and don't all treat new members like that. You are correct IF the need did arise, it is a great defensive tool to have on you with a multi purpose.

I don't care if he's a new member or not. All I'm saying is that the odds of having to fend off some maniac with a maglite are about as slim as they come. I've never heard of anything like this happening to anyone here, have you? Feel free to find me a post or two where an explorer's been attacked by someone (who isn't a security guard) while exploring.

If you want to carry an oversized and inferior flashlight around with you because you think that's a situation you're likely to encounter, then I don't know what to say other than that I feel sorry for you.

I have rarely explored places by night (around here, it's just easier in the daytime to blend in.) Therefore, I only take this small, cheap flashlight that I can hang on my arm and can get out of the way, and that I can lose and not cry over it. When I DO explore by night, I take my black maglight (not for self protection, just preference) and I have NO idea what kind it is. All I know is that it illuminates a medium sized room.

I like to carry a MagLite because:

a) It has some substance to it and it feels very solid; I find that comforting
b) I find it works quite well
c) I like incandescent more than LED because LED gives me a headache
d) The only LED flashlights I can find can't even light up a small room properly
e) I can get the bulbs for one at many hardware stores
f) I can get a replacement MagLite at the surplus stores I go to

And as I said before, I even carry a 5-inch AA MagLite for backup, so you can get compact ones too.

I love my maglite, and it could kick any surefire of the same price range in any category except size/weight. Seriously, stock mag's are not all that great. They are only good for 2 things... weapon & battery capacity. Throw one of these in:

http://www.flashli...eviews/everled.htm

with some good batteries and you're good to go for a while. Replace other components as accordingly if you want to fix other problems with it. Either way it's still less than another flashlight of the quality.

As far as using it for defense... it's mostly for show. However, if you do have to use it, do you know how? the solid 1/2 at the back of the light is what to hit with... but don't hit in the head with full force. It's more lethal than a police baton, and you could find yourself with someone who doesn't get up again. Hit the elbows, knees, or collar bones, and I can guarantee that whoever's fucking with you will stop immediately.
