In an earlier post you mentioned buildings and drains. Here is my OPINION.

That little light would be fine to keep in your pocket for when you are wandering around and need a bit of extra light to see something. I don't think I would trust it as my primary light when exploring a building at night. I absolutely wouldn't trust it as my primary light when I head underground.

When I head in a mine I consider my lights as life support equipment. No different than scuba gear when I dive, rope when I climb, or a parachute if I were to jump out of an airplane. Without a light, getting out of most of the mines that I explore would be impossible.

I'm not bashing your light. I may purchase a couple myself just to throw into my glove box or carry one in my purse. But, I would not take one in a place where my life may depend on its reliability.

That's why I always bring a backup light, a little stick-'n-click attatched to my video camera. It does suck, but it provides enough light to get out of a jam.

Nope, not really. Cuz people in general are sheep and they'll purchase whatever is cheap. Then they'll fool themselves into how great it is, so they don't have to actually say that they wasted money on a piece of crap.

Most people will vehemently exalt the praises of crap, rather than admit that they aren't so happy with it, or that it's junk.



Also, you need to re-frame your ideas about your personal safety when in underground environments as far as what you trust to light your way, and what a sufficient "back-up" ligth is.

What happens when the cheap junk you bought breaks/malfunctions/dies, and you switch to your stick'n'click and as you're feebly trying to find your way along you trip and then smack it (and your camera) inthe the ground or a wall and break them both, then have no light at all?

C'mon. I mean you could do worlds better with even a $20 light.

I never go underground without 3 lights.

I GUESS that's possible, although my video camera is meant to be durable, as well as waterproof, so that probably wouldn't happen. And you're right, I probably should still hang on to my old energizer, that way I'll have 3 lights. Really the only reason I don't want to spend money on a light is because I don't get to do UE as much as I would like to, so the money would be better spent on something that I use more actively in my life.

I suggest a small EDC flashlight. I use a flashlight several times a day. I work in a factory, drive a car with a toddler who likes to drop things, and get home after dark most nights. Then there's possum spotting, reading in the dark, or charging up glow-in-the-dark things. So we keep a $20 flashlight about the size of my pinky on the keychain.

Cheaper version, 3-mode pinky-sized flashlight that is rather good for your needs (Small light you'll find uses for).

Deluxe-er version with better knurling for grip. Carrying a light helps in a lot of situations. And it's nice to have something to fiddle with. I also suggest quality Low-Self-Discharge AAA NiMHs to go with it.

I used to have a 3D maglite but I dropped it and the reflector came out of alignment and it is now impossible to focus it... I am now sold to Surefire! I got two, a 6P LED and a G2 LED, 120 lumens each. Surefire flashlights are a bit expensive but I got both for 80$ no taxes at a local shop that was liquidating his inventory! talk about a great deal. The only issue is that they go through 2 RCR123A battery in about 2 to 3 hours. Luckily, I have 3 set of tenergy rechargable battery with a 3 hours charger. All and all, I couldn't be happier with them!

I used a Maglite for years but in the last year or two I've been using some lights I found at Costco. Its usually sold in a 3 pack of 250 lumen ones for 15 bux. Just this last weekend I picked up a 2 pack of 500 lumen ones for 20 bux. I used them for some caving just this Sunday. They are focusable and work great.

I'm rough with my gear, so I go with something that can stand up to abuse.

I recently got my hands on an old Vietnam era military-issue MX-991/U anglehead flashlight and I retrofitted it with a bulb from a modern LED flashlight. The casing on the flashlight is nigh invulnerable, and the light is bright and reliable.

Best combo for urban exploration IMO, especially in rough places.

Those old lights are cool so it would be neat to see one updated with an LED. Did you change the reflector or just use the old one? What driver board? Batteries?

I gotta say, I don't know where I'd be without my mini maglite.
Can focus to be really bright, or can be somewhat dim over a wide area, and when it's somewhat dim, it's dim enough to be remain unnoticed by authorities in the night (so far).

I just got a LED LENSER P7 and so far this thing is great, pretty bright for a 4x AAA torch and the focusable beam is great. The crazy part is it comes with a 5 year warranty.

For a first backup I have a standard mini maglight and my second backup is my phone flash. If the first two fail, I have more problems then low quality flashlights.

Primary Choice is Surefire. They're bright as hell, reliable, amazing warranty and support. Only downsides are price and battery life. They're expensive and the battery life sucks for the CR123 models. But a Surefire E2DL is my EDC. Surefires can range from $60 to $1000s. The E2Dl is about $175.

Second Choice is Streamlight, their rechargeables are great, and I've had their Stinger and Waypoint for some time now, and the throw is amazing. Both are in the $100 range, though they have cheaper models.

I've used Fenix as well, and they're in the $50+ range with great quality as well.

Candlepowerforums has also been a great reference for me on lights.
