Wow, two other groups, Sunday explorers, hmm. Glad you had fun. How deep was the water in the main square drain?

Yeah, we ended up meeting with two pairs of other explorers.
The water was only a few inches deep most of the way, no problem with gumboots.
Though, in the creek itself, it was almost 3 feet in some places.

I'm thinking, if the drain is 15 or 20 feet below street level... Couldn't the cistern have been above the drain? Maybe right overtop? I wonder if there was any hint of a drain pipe in the ceiling of the drain at that location. The cistern would have been heavy, but I don't think it would have been any heavier than hard compacted soil.

I'm thinking this because they obviously dug the cistern up at the same time they connected that extra drain in the middle of store st. You know the one that connects to that gaping hole in the floor of the old drain which empties out beside the bridge nearest to the Janion.

Of course, around that gaping hole the floor is steel isnt it? Like a big 10 foot long half cylinder of steel with the gaping hole roughly cut out of it? Did anybody ever stick there head in there and look around? Maybe that used to be the cistern. Maybe the water just collected right there from the drain. And later they removed it, put in the steel floor and had it drain out under the bridge. Like I said earlier, anything's possible.

The back-breaking tunnel had a wall of thorns covering it, looked like no one had been through that entrance for some time.
I had a blast, though, and the hall itself was pretty cool.
We ended up coming out practically in someones backyard, and were several blocks farther than we thought we had gone.
Definitely a more direct route from point A to point B if one wants to bypass traffic, albeit, a lot wetter one.

There is apparently another entrance which we didn't check out.
Might have to find that one sometime, though, if it's where I think it is, it'll be another back-breaking tunnel.
The full-height tunnels were a lot easier to navigate.

Maybe he left something behind in a tunnel about 17-18 years ago.

Oh god, fourth photo down from the top...I'm just imagining that valve opening. Evertime I've been down there a huge amount of liquid came pouring out of that pipe at some timed interval.

No it was more like 1000 gallons of street water. It must collect nearby and then release when it gets to a certain level.
