Didn't realize they sent prisoners all the way across the country, even back then.

in 1898, I would imagine it was the only female prisonl not to mention one of the only prisions in Canada then. I don't think there would have been many until the population started to grow after about the 20s?

Well, sorry Mr. Sarcasm. I obviously have 6 hours to just sit down and read all 69 pages of this thread.

That's Ms. Sarcasm, thank you very much.

edit: spelling. and sorry about the attitude.

Attitude I can handle. Spelling is a different matter.

Get it right.

If you were referring to my post, don't believe I had any spelling errors. They were grammatical and punctuation errors, so you get it right.

Has anyone ever been underneath the Crystal Garden? I had a sleepover there with guides a really long time ago; snuck out of the ballroom and went into the basement. Not a whole lot down there... the old cement walls of the pool and water pumps are still there, and the usual furnaces, spiders, etc. Still was kind of cool.

"I had a sleepover there with guides a really long time ago;"

Were these Girl Guides or Boy Guides? I'm guessing you are a female, based on this 'clue'. The only boy guides I've met or heard of, run rafts down rivers, or chase sheep in the Swiss Alps, and make weird noises whenever they reach a mountain top.

If ever you do have 12+ (not 6) hours to spend perusing this uber thread, you will find some talk of the Crystal back a ways. The pool itself is actually a massive concrete 'tray' that floats on the muck and mire that was once Jim's Bay. (You were lucky to see behind the scenes) The only way they could keep it from sinking; bloody clever if you ask me.

Jolly good work Mr. Rattenbury, jolly good. So sorry your majestic edifice was defiled by the 'B.C. Experience'. We can only hope something noble comes of this ruckus.

Yes, I am female. Our games consisted of learning the clothes washing symbols and recipes, whereas the boys learnt knot tying, surviving in the wilderness with a knife, tarp, and canteen. I would have given anything to go play in the mud with the boys. Thankfully my parents took me camping so I learnt how to do most of that, but it still pisses me off about the sexist treatment.

Apparently the Empress is sinking at the rate of an inch every century because the douglas fir trees its built on are rotting?

That's funny. Now we know why men are really little boys who can't do their own laundry. Or cook. Go figure.

Future parents, take note.

If only it was an inch per century. It's actually closer to half an inch per year. And the wood isn't rotting so much as it is just slipping into the much.

It would be interesting to see what that whole area would look like after a major quake. Imagine the splorin that we could conduct amid the towering ruins of a shattered Empress.

Talked to a manager at the Empress hotel. Took me down into the sub-basement and showed me the half of the utility tunnel that is now under the kitchen.

It is just a myth that they used giant douglas firs.

J Pete
whats the empress built on,,?
old native totem poles made of cedar wood ?
Also Ive been hearing that the native people may have built the original
victorian tunnels,, had to do with blood rituals and burial ceremonies ,

stuff like that, thats why they are digging up native bones all over the city,,

I think the Mayans estimated the world would come to an end in May of 2012 sometime. Seriously.

I'm not so sure about the blood ritual crap. Have you ever read a book about BC? Maybe people are digging up native bones all over the place because they're... oh, I don't know... native to the area?

Many moons ago, (1973) while training with BC Hydro to be a double decker bus driver / tour guide (My summer job for 4 summers), we had a tour of the basement of the Empress Hotel. We were then told that the Empress was built on Australian Gumwood pilings. The gumwood logs were far more resistant to the moist conditions, and less likely to rot. I think the actual name of the wood was Jarra (sp?).
