Nice pictures. I used to live in the house that sat where the construction is occurring now. I got the chance to see the video feed when they inspected the sewer line, which was supposedly dated to pre 1890. All brick - not in bad shape for such an old structure.

As for being able to provide "indisputable" evidence of secret tunnels here - to anyone, much less your history professor - good luck. Read back through the endless meanderings of this thread - the sad fact is that there isn't any. Not a shred. That's the trick of it - It's all conjecture. All anecdotal. Every bit of it. More than 1400 posts, and not one piece of evidence that you might call "indisputable." Oh, there have been hints. There have been tales. Stories. Whiffs to keep people hungry, and on the trail. Despite repeated promises to produce that kind of evidence, it never seems to happen. Over and over and over and over again.

The way it works is this: someone will hear something of these tunnels, from a source that inevitably can't be verified, and is just a bit "off" , leaving just enough wiggle room so that if and when the story doesn't go any further (which it never does), no one is surprised. The tunnels that do exist provide the basis for this conjecture, fueling people's passions for tunnel exploration, and the actual workings help plant the seeds of possibility. If some tunnels actually exist, then why not more?

Unfortunately, inevitably, these sources have always proven to be bogus - not that these sources haven't been given every opportunity to pony up with proof. Some - whose faith is never shaken (gotta admire that kind of faith, admittedly) - have even gone so far as to promise these storytellers money in exchange for solid information/evidence, others have been given cameras to photograph the hidden underground city they keep babbling about - and surprise, surprise - we never hear anything about or from them again. Maybe the alligators in the sewer tunnels are getting them all......

Don't get me wrong, I've been just as hopeful as anyone that one of these stories would lead to the discovery of something more. Would lead us to one of these mythical secret underground works, that we could all point to and say "Aha!" I'm not a skeptic because I don't believe they could exist. I'm a skeptic because no evidence has never been produced that would lead me to believe that any of these stories holds water. It may in the future. But not to this point, and not now. They just sadly never do

...and yet, tourists will leave around 3 billion dollars in Victoria this year, and a good chunk of that dough will go to professional bullshitters and/or historians (and I must make the distinction between these two very clear) who tell tall tales about Victoria's Secret Underground™.

The people who I've spoken with...those who take my cash with a promise to reveal the tunnels etc. ...never pan out (pardon the pun), yet through this act of commerce participate in the city's economy tadum tadum etc.

So it's all good.

So is this an admission of defeat then?

Absolutely not. This is merely an acknowledgement that I've had a lot of help from unconventional sources, and that their information, taken on a whole, has provided enormous advantages over the 'tried and true' route through City Hall Archives, etc. Were I have to relied upon official sources, I'd still be hearing one word answers to my original question:

Good one man! A very cool old tunnel. You could have blacked out the end, and told us you solved the mystery, 'it goes on 'forever', my flashlight was going dead, had to retreat, heard weird gurgling moaning noises, chains rattling, a glimpse of a hooded creature...', yadda yadda

Seriously, nice work, I'm assuming it's in Victoria. Looks kind of like maybe Esquimalt? or old towne, it looks very old, interesting with the wire conduit. You know some people who would be very keen to have some vague clues as to where this is...

Pints for a peek, anyday of the week... (Please consider that a bribe, cuz that's exacatackily what it is)

Best tunnel pic yet on this thread, not comparing to the drains, a whole different thing. So, like, if you want an instant best friend, just call me, (I'm very rich) 666 999 0101 And btw, your AV is the coolest in the universe.

Hi gang

I have not been around a while but It has come to my attention that I have been labeled a thief of copper by some of the mods. This is not true and I don't advocate theft of any kind. I was just really trying to make a point to protect the stupid. I’m sorry if anyone thought that I was looking to get instructions for myself to steel copper because that was not the intent. My argument was for education in the same way that I think they should have safe needle sites. I dropped it when the consensus was that this was not the right forum for those kind of discussions and I accept that. But that’s a far cry from me being a thief. The idea for a "how to safely get copper wire for street people" was a lark that turned into a debate. That’s not why I love this forum and that’s not why I keep coming back. I enjoy the discussions and like to insert some humor here and there. I apologies again to anyone I may have offended. Peace. I will however continue my search for the hellmouth I firmly believe is under the city of gardens. :p

So I asked one of my history professors about the tunnels... He thinks they exist and said he is having a debate with his partner about it. He also said he's heard about the construction and cistern theories and would love to see any undisputable evidence I find. Other than that, he didn't know much.

History prof at UVic? I'd be interested in chatting with him. Probably several of us would be. Any chance of disclosing his name, perhaps over beer? I'm sure you could get a tunnel tour out of it.

JP and I have undisputable evidence that the cistern isn't where Dr. L would put it, because we've been beneath Victoria at that location and it wasn't there.

I thought they dug up and got rid of the cistern at some point? besides it was never shown to connect to those drains. It was stand alone, at least from the drawings in Dr Lai's book.
