got this email today

Opportunities to visit the Richardson Olmsted Complex are available once again.
Please join us to view portions of the interior during the two open houses and monthly tours, before building renovations commence for the first phase of development as the Buffalo Architecture Center, boutique hotel, and event & conference space. In 2011 the doors were opened for the National Preservation Conference, the first time in over 10 years, and nearly 2,000 visited over a 10 day period. Demand to see the Complex was overwhelming and we are eager to show off our progress again in 2012. Visit our website for additional information on the schedule at http://www.richard...sted.com/visit.php.

The admin is one of the only portions of the building I haven't seen yet, so this would be a great way to do so. It's wonderful to see how much work has been done to preserve this building.

From what I hear the tours aren't very photographer friendly.

it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.

I have heard 99% bad reviews on this.
... but maybe that is because we are explorers not historians.

That's correct. Basically, when they conducted last year's open house, they forced participating photographers to sign over the copyrights to whatever photos they were going to take, which inspired a UER member who'd obtained a slot to relinquish said slot. There's a thread somewhere here that has a discussion about that debacle.

Edit: ...and here it is.

2012.

The "H.H. Richardson Complex" (as it's otherwise known) is one of the few places where I bothered to contact the caretakers to ask for permission to photograph. They denied me. Their reason was "We haven't yet worked out intellectual copyright concerns". No liability concerns. Copyright concerns.

So now they're letting people take tours. I guess the lawyers ironed out all the "intellectual copyright concerns".

No thanks +1.

Especially since the current owners are dickbags about intellectual copyright of photographers and herd you through the clean walled admin that got replastered and repainted white while demanding you either can't shoot, or if you do that you don't own your photos.

Why bother indeed.

Nothing about that admin building looks unsafe. I hate how most people who don't explore have this idea that any closed building is a deathtrap. Eastern state... i get the hardhats. This... ridiculous.

I dig the exterior shots of this place very much. The insides, now after seeing the shots posted above... not so much. I'll hit the outside on a road trip sometime and call it at that.

Has everything been removed from the outer wards at this point then?

Not all of it, but most of it. They apparently have torn down the majority of the plaster work (some of which contained asbestos) to get at the brick to stabilize and shore the walls but can't even contemplate replastering (and they may not, in some areas, at all) until they have consultation with State Historic Preservation Office (this was stated in February).

In short, even the few corridors that retain some of their original painted plastered walls are so littered with support beams and scaff you can't see through them. They've saved windows and doors in some wards for later reinstallation but not moulding in a lot of areas. Some of the floors were removed with temporary protective barriers put in their stead since you probably remember how crap a lot of those floors had become.

Right now they're tearing up the parking lot to make... a different parking lot.

And in my opinion, they can still eat a bag of dicks.
