| | | Whenever I go exploring I wear a trilby fedora I picked up at Wal-mart for $10. When it's hot, it shades my head from the sunlight, when it's cold it keeps my head warm. I have an array of hats that most people would deem odd, but the trilby is the cheapest, so I wouldn't mind as much if it were to get damaged. It's in my profile picture.

I have a selection of odd hats as well; a Russian fur hat with a red star, a U.S Marine Corps utility cap with a red star, and a red Lebanese shemagh. I guess carrying a red star or Soviet Party pin is my lucky charm; even though I'm a socialist, not a communist.

| | | Bring a handful of paperclips. They are actually pretty useful. You can make them into small hooks, throw them at homeless people, jingle a chain of them to distract stupid people or use them as poker chips. Bring a dental mirror and pick. You can use the mirror to inspect ladder rungs from underneath, or to look around corners. The pick is... Well, I don't have anything good to do with it right now, but I'm sure I'll think of something. [last edit 12/2/2007 4:47 AM by Alx_xlA - edited 1 times]

I like the idea about the paperclips. Sort of goes along with my idea of bringing a short length of twine/rope. I can see many possibilities that having some paperclips can bring. Good suggestion. Dental mirror I like also, but the pick I'm not so sure of. Maybe clean some homeless person's teeth (or tooth?)?

| | | Posted by BlackbirdI just thought of this; there isn't a patron saint of explorers is there?

St. Jude, the patron saint of desperate cases.
I bring a flat box cutter... its small, really sharp, and I can claim I use it for work. And I have one of these LED lights. They don't run on batteries and are suprizingly bright!
For luck, I have a skeleton key necklace. Its a long story.

| | | Another useful item I bring along is a bandanna. They can be used to keep dust out of your mouth, and sweat off your face, as well as handy in case of emergencies (can be used as a tourniquet). Sometimes I use grey colored ones (which I think are the best) and actually draw/write useful information on it with sharpies (medium and fine point works the best), along with the date and some on-site notes/thoughts. You can even have buddies sign it that are with you. They make a good momento of a exploration a few years later. FYI- You can purchase very tiny mini sharpies that are easy to store in your gear. They make nice gifts too!

I would kill you for a snack right now. I mean, seriously. I would end you for a cookie. |

| | | White lighters are unlucky. Pad of paper and pen are useful to jot down any inspiring graffiti text or whatever else you might find. I always bring one of those pins that has several different colors that you can choose from; they are really handy. Paperclips can help keep doors from closing and locking behind you. If you can help it, keep your gear in your pockets and not a backpack because it looks less sketchy and less likely to be stealing something or dealing drugs. Less sketchy looking = less likely to be harassed by cops or crack heads or...

the sketchy people ive come across,(homeless/scrappers/crackheads), have not had a backpack on.... in my opinion if you have a backpack, it shows you have equipment and are there for better reasons than some vagrant walking around aimlessly...

Personally, I don't smoke, but it's a great way to meet desperate girls... "Man I'd do anything for a Cigarette right about now" "Really, have a Marlboro, and hi my name is..." Good way to break the ice Well I have a lucky tee/camp shirt. Only lucky because I've had it on pretty much through all of the lucky breaks I've had in the last year or so. "Goddamn we were lucky ... nah it was all the shirt, don't break the law w/o it.

| | | Mirror, eh? Never crossed my mind but it strikes me as a great idea. Do the whole saving private ryan gig with the bubblegum and the mirror...if you came across any errant MG42 nests, that is. I found this commemorative coin in my last scrounge and it's from the 2000 olympics with a hockey player on it. Not exactly expensive, I looked it up and it would sell for about 12.95 ($AU), but it's just good to have around. I don't really carry anything else little. I normally wear heaps of rings, but I'm sure to take them off before exploring. Gonna start taking paperclips now though, frigging great idea! Homeless man accosts you...*FLING PAPERCLIPS AND FLEE!* lol, 1 assault charge later...

| | | Posted by hydrotherapy I've found that apparently a white lighter is decidedly unlucky if kept in one's car.
|
Someone found "the voodoo lighter" ! Thank God! My curse is lifted. note: it's not safe to keep it anywhere (it's the reason lighters aren't allowed on US flights anymore).
Don't be pissing off voodoo girls in the Big Easy, never me do that again!

Thats why I carry an auto inspection mirror that looks like an extendable dentist mirror, it helped me on a few occasions.
