| | | Hosting Options, part 2 < on 2/15/2007 4:42 AM >
| | | Alright, so I've had some more time to look at my options specifically. In the other thread, it's a close tie between "stick with 1&1" and "don't", and if you look at the options alone, "buy your own server" wins. Here are my options now: 1. Stick with 1&1. I'm not really considering this. Why? Like I said in the other thread, it's not the downtime, it's the lack of proper information and support. Not even knowing what's going on with my server is worse than it being down. 2. Get a dedicated server with ThePlanet ThePlanet has a good history of being on the ball. They have a nice server package that costs $199/mo. (That's $50 US more than I am paying now). 3. Colo a server. I've found a good deal on colocation here in Toronto, at the renowned facility 151 Front Street. It's quite literally the best datacenter in Canada -- not to be joked about. Power and network uptimes are pretty much guaranteed, reducing the only point of failure to the server itself. And since it would be my server, I would be able to actually go there and see what's up.
So, options 2 and 3 are the ones I'm looking at now. Let's examine the pro's and cons. Dedicated Hosting with ThePlanet PROS Good reputation in the business 24/7 support that's actually in the same continent Phone reps can contact datacenter to see what's going on No need to worry about hardware costs CONS I'm still at their mercy, no matter what their reputation is. It's not cheap. $2400 US a year. It's not my server, so all that money pretty much goes nowhere. Any hardware upgrades are billed at high prices (such as more HD space) If there is a data problem, I have to pay them to fix it since I'm not there. I'd be under ThePlanet's terms of service, which could be a legal hot spot Buying a server and Colocating in Toronto PROS It's about $85 US a month for hosting in the best datacenter in the country Power is guaranteed 100%, and connectivity is guaranteed 99.995% up. I'd own the server, so larger hard drives or other hardware could be purchased at normal rates and only my own time would be used The hosting is in Canada, so no worries about the US Gov shutting us down No real terms of service that I need to adhere to -- No worries about site getting shut down without a police order or something. If there's a problem, I can actually go there to fix it! Once the server is paid for, the monthly "donation request" would go down to only $85! CONS High initial cost (I'm looking at about $1500 for a nice dual-core Sun server, 1U) That's really the only con. So, for the reasons outlined above, I'm leaning heavily towards Colocation in Toronto. So, the question is: Which do you think I should take (see poll), and, would you donate to the "UER's Own Server" fund to cover the cost of a shiny new box for us to move to? (reply in thread) Your lovable site admin, -av

| | | I've honestly heard bad things about theplanet. And I think It would be better to build your own because then you actually own the hardware. And of course all the other pro's you listed.

No matter who I switch to, it would probably be at least 12 hours of downtime. The biggest factor in the downtime is the amount of time it takes to transfer the UER database from the old host to the new one. But, if I was to build the server myself, I could load the database onto it locally before it gets installed into the datacenter. Anyway, either way there will be some downtime and some set up time. But it will be planned. -av

| | | I went with option 3, and sure, i'd donate. It's not like you're just going to run off with the server and not put UER back on it. It sounds like a better option overall.

| | | There will always be some down time, but it's not the end of the world. A crashed server with no backup and no on the shelf replacement parts, may not be as good a deal as it first appears. Plus any hardware repair will be your own time Av. Perhaps the current provider has learned a lesson in customer service...at least with one of it's customers.

| | | Av, I think in the case of UER, it will be a good thing moving this to your own server at a co-location facility down the street from you basically because of the complexity of the software setup on this site. [last edit 2/15/2007 7:29 AM by Agent Skelly - edited 1 times]

| | | And since it is entirely clear that you are really only interested in the colo server at this point, I think you should go with that. It looks like you are still "considering" The Planet, just because you think you should, but you have no desire to go that way. I guess your real question is, how many people are wiling to contribute to get your server. It might take a little while, but you'll get there. There are enough Samurai-like shut-ins who will lose all touch with reality from fear of another down time that they will do whatever you say.

| | | Just think! If you're at 151, you can sign in one or two people with you as "technical advisers" and show them the place! ;) Seriously, though... if you can get 151 for $85 a month, durrrr.
Let's do the math: 1&1 = $1800 USD / year ThePlanet = $2400 USD / year 151 = $1020 USD / year (+$1200 hardware) Still cheaper than The Planet, and not much more expensive than what you have now... with the bonus of owning your own hardware, 24/7 local access, and complete control. Question, though... you mention a 1U Sun server... does that mean you're going to have to port to Solaris? How's all your asp stuff going to run on this? Will Solaris do what you need? As far as raising the money, I think it's time for a fundraising drive!

| | | Option 3. That way you own your own server, instead of basically renting one. Sounds like the difference in monthly cost once the server is paid for will actually save money for everybody in the long run. I'll sure donate.

| | | Option 3 man , I imagine that the initial cost shoudltn be a problem if lets say every member donated a dollar, multiply that by the number of members (currently 15883 ) and voila you have more than you need, so you can also upgrade it and stuff, now to be realistic, not alot of members donate or are capable of , so that might be a bit of a problem , but if the members care to see the site sustained I think they will donate extra at least once for the cost to be fulfilled , and that will then solve alot of problems as you mentioned. thats my opinion about it .
