If you want to go with Option 3, create a menu tab for donating funds for the new server. This way you can start creating your resources and build your server around the budget rather than worring if the budget will meet the needs.

That's what I train all my staff in the audio industry when building a new system.

If option 3 doesn't work (for some reason) you can always use the funds for the hosting plans in option 2.

Or, make it so that every time we use bandwidth by going to a new page, we have to first select a radio button, enter an amount, and click a button indicating how much we want to donate for that bandwidth.

Anything under $100 / mo for a colo is a steal. Lock that rate in.

Colours, LINKS, images, etc are not allowed, text and LINKS only. Emphasis mine.

UER will remain free, at no point will I consider charging for access to the basic features. The only exception is "premium" features that are deemed to be "desirable" but not "required", such as the WatchWord feature currently available only to donors.

I've been approached by Google in the past about putting advertising on my site (how cool is that... GOOGLE asking ME if they can put ads on!) but I graciously declined. I hate ads.

I voted for option 3 and will certainly be willing to donate.

Av how much of the resources will be used by UER with the server you are currently looking at? My thought is if it isn't tsking up more than a majority of them then maybe you could also rent out space of the server. The space you rent out could be for a UE or non-UE site and could help fund the monthly costs.

Perhaps the current provider has learned a lesson in customer service...at least with one of it's customers.

...package that costs $199/mo. (That's $50 US more than I am paying now)...

Your lovable site admin,

Not that it matters or anything of the sort but shouldn't it be "(that's $50 US more than the community is paying now)"? Im sure you personally don't pay much if anything each month other than your time.

Wow. That place looks so sketchy. Did you notice that the photos of their datacenter look like stock photos?

Anyway, I need colo in Toronto, and I've already found an awesome place.

The more powerful the server, the faster UER will run. I've tried side-hosting before, but frankly I can't match the features or prices offered by the bigwigs, so it's not worth all the customer service hassle. Besides, everyone took my head off when I tried.

Not that it matters or anything of the sort but shouldn't it be "(that's $50 US more than the community is paying now)"? Im sure you personally don't pay much if anything each month other than your time.

Well, technically I am still paying. It's going on my credit card, and coming out of my pockets. The community donates towards the cause and it helps a lot, but I never rely on the donations as a steady income.

I voted for #3, but blackhawk does have a good point with this comment:

A crashed server with no backup and no on the shelf replacement parts, may not be as good a deal as it first appears. Plus any hardware repair will be your own time Av.

What would you do?

Well, backups is not a problem -- I've got an awesome backup solution.

My own time is no big deal... I have lots of that when emergencies happen. Hell, if it wasn't for my free time, there'd be no UER

The server I'm looking at has a 3-year next-day warranty for all parts except the hard drive (which it doesn't come with). I'm going with two hard drives in a RAID configuration.

I'm a bit late entering this discussion. It looks like you have decided to colo your own server with a tenant at 151 Front. Who did you end up going with?
I am familiar with some of the providers there and can make some recommendations if you haven't signed anything yet.

Option 3 for the win. I'll try to help financially but seeing as my own internet connection is in limbo, I can't promise anything.
