| | | Servers aren't that bad Av. I own my own server. You don't need an Actual Dell Poweredge, or HP Proliant to run a website. You just need a well cooled server. It costed me $500 to build my server, and it has been running strong co-lo'ed for 3 years now.

| | | Well, I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who got a little nervous. I had no idea I was a UER junkie until I couldn't log on. My God, the sweats, nausea, hair and teeth falling out. It was terrible. I was sniffing model glue to get me past the UER jones. Thanks for all the hard work AV.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Prometheus - I addressed your trolling in public. There's no need to send inflammatory private messages to me. Again, if you don't like the way UER operates, find another site. Since you enjoy trolling, and propagandizing, I'm done with you. Do not send more private messages. They will go unanswered. -- I for one am glad to have UER back up. I guess you never realize how much you miss something until it's taken away. The past couple of days I've been bored out of my mind.

| | | No, I remember some kind of money drive the last time this happened for Av to purchase his own server for this site. So something like this would never happen again. I smell fish... Unless I, and many other UER members, misunderstood. DSM

Also, this is a forum/resource, not a club or a union or business. We have mods, not staff or officers. There is no treasurer, because there is no need for one.

| | | Posted by Avatar-X No, no, and No. Servers are expensive. Think at least $1000 if not $2000. If I had taken up donations for a new server, it would have taken a while, and you would have remembered. No, what happened was, when we switched from our old host to 1&1 (after something like a month of downtime), there was a $150 setup fee and a $150 first month fee (or something close to those numbers), so I took up donations of $300 to help pay for that amount. UER does not currently, nor has it ever, owned the server it is running on. Like I said ... servers are expensive, and once you own one, you still gotta pay to colocate it somewhere. -av

Well, you recall wrong. The last big UER drive was $300 or so for the startup fees on this hosting. There wasn't any blue headers because UER was offline at the time -- our old server was toast. This is during the period while UER was down for like a month in 2005. I assure you: I do not own a server. There never was a drive to buy a server. I'm considering having one, so we can be assured to be online (or at least have the server under my direct control) at all times, but I'm not sure yet. Currently, I am doing damage control. I am looking at alternate options. Recovering $20 from 1&1 is the least of my concerns. -av

| | | Prometheus also: You've also not been here during any of the major outages. You couldn't possibly remember any of the "drives" that we had, because they all occurred before you joined the site. Isn't it funny how the people who don't actually donate are the ones who are complaining about money? It's not even their money! -av

| | | Posted by JeepXJ I was relived when you got a page up explaining that it was down, and not just flat out gone. I was so horrified at the "page not found" error that I had to go to 2 other computers, and 1 other network just hoping that it was my computer and not the server.
