yay!
| | | Server Outage Feb 6 '07 < on 2/8/2007 7:02 AM >
| | | Apologies for this 48 hour outage.
Why did it happen? On the 26th of Jan, I got an email from my host, 1&1:
Please be advised that due to an upgrade of the 1&1 Data Center, we will need to briefly shut down your server while technicians perform an internal hardware realignment. This realignment will be performed overnight from February 05, 2007 to February 06, 2007, between 11:00 PM EST and 06:00 AM EST. |
They suggested I reboot to ensure everything would be alright. This seemed fine to me, as I reboot the server every now and then and I knew it would be fine.
Sure enough, Tuesday morning at 1am EST the server went offline. I was like "Oh yeah, the realignment" and didn't give it much more of a thought. I went to bed. At 8 am the next morning, the server was still offline. I quickly went into 1&1's admin panel and checked stuff there, tried a force reboot -- nothing. So, I called up the number at the bottom of the email, the one that it says to call for any questions or problems. It redirects me to the 1st level tech centre in the Phillipines -- not very useful. Nevertheless, I explain the problem and they redirect me to the Dedicated Server line. It rings, I'm on hold for a while, and then I'm back to 1st level tech support, where I have to repeat the story again. Over the last two days, I've spoken to 29 people in various departments, most of whom have been little help. Suffice to say, I am already looking for a better, more reliable host. It wasn't the server outage that did it -- it was the inability for me to receive any information.
So who did you all talk to? I've had the 'pleasure' of speaking with the following people: In 1&1's first-level call center in the Phillipines Salman Shareen Chow Ronald (twice) -- somewhat heplful Sally Ahmad Raspy Bernice (twice) Ben Michael Fritzi Don Sal Florence In the Sales/Information department (in the US, more helpful) Chris Ryan Allen Tony Robin Pete Micah Paul In the hard-to-reach Dedicated Server department Tristan Timothy Scanlon (the most useful of the bunch) In the UK Press Office for 1&1 Richard Stevenson (who had a lovely accent and seemed confused as to why I would be calling him, but vowed to help) Elusive players Mike Devlin, who was referred to by several people and emailed me once, but with whom I didn't actually speak I estimate I've spent 4 hours on the phone and at least 6 more hours testing and backing up and trying, not to mention losing a lot of fur. | | | Thank you for putting us back on-line. Your effort is appreciated. 4 hours on the phone to un-helpful techs probably seemed like 4 days. CO
The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave. |

If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :) |

| | | Thank goodness it's back, and they didn't loose any of your data... Thank you for your hard work. I must say too that as horrible as it was to be without UER for an extended period (I think i'm addicted... "HI, my name is Jeep, and I am an addict...") I was relived when you got a page up explaining that it was down, and not just flat out gone. I was so horrified at the "page not found" error that I had to go to 2 other computers, and 1 other network just hoping that it was my computer and not the server. Also I really liked the drawings explaining the situation... brought a smile to my face. They were very well done btw, did you do those yourself av?

That is without a doubt the funniest thing I've read so far today! Props! THE SERVER'S DOWN; GET ME SOMEONE WITH A CUTE ACCENT: STAT!!!
Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | UER, a big pissing contest, yet... YOU are the one talking negatively. YOU are the one who came into AvChat afew short minutes ago, stating something to the effect that current members should question server status, because of some supposed issue from the past where "the fine people of UER bought Av a server". YOU are the one, who when pressed for actual details of this issue, conveniently had to "go to work". So, if it is a pissing contest, you certainly have been caught with your pants unzipped. Now, here's my advice to you. If you don't like UER, please leave. That is all.

| | | No, no, and No. Servers are expensive. Think at least $1000 if not $2000. If I had taken up donations for a new server, it would have taken a while, and you would have remembered. No, what happened was, when we switched from our old host to 1&1 (after something like a month of downtime), there was a $150 setup fee and a $150 first month fee (or something close to those numbers), so I took up donations of $300 to help pay for that amount. UER does not currently, nor has it ever, owned the server it is running on. Like I said ... servers are expensive, and once you own one, you still gotta pay to colocate it somewhere. -av

Av, you've really gotta recoup at least some of the cost from this and then show how the money is going back into UER if it was donated money. edit by av: note for those reading -- it has been confirmed that prometheus is posting this only to cause trouble, but the posts have been left online as proof for you guys. Jesus, give it up already. He doesn't have to show shit. Don't like it? Don't donate. End of story. This isn't a public company, nor is it a registered charity. If he takes in a few bucks more each month than he needs to keep this site going, and wants to buy himself a fancy new gadget or dinner for himself, rock on. What he does with the money is no one's business but his own as long as the lights stay on here. And I guarantee there's a clause in his hosting contract that keeps 1&1 from assuming any liability in case of outage.
