Yes, it's called the TOS and everyone should read it every now and again. If you do not, I have zero sympathy if your idea of how something works isn't how it actually works. Sorry! Chris...

And yet the privacy policy which I'm assuming you referring to was just pointed out as inaccurate with it saying "Information posted here is not publically (sic) viewable" when of open users boards (which UER still lists as Private boards) DO show up in search engines and are publically viewable. I'm just asking for a little more clarity in the user experience in one small aspect. Mods are saying they're for user privacy, yet refer to a broken privacy policy, and then fight against adding a simple note to make things more clear. That just doesn't make sense to me.

| | | No one's fighting against anything and we are not dismissing your concerns either - at the end of the day the only person who can decide to add a note OR physically add it to the code for display on UER is Av. The only person who can change how a board is/isn't spidered on the likes of Google is Av. He's been informed of this thread and will no doubt be along at some point to point and laugh and let us know what he thinks. Until then, we are just spinning our wheels, as the only thing I can say at the moment are words to reassure you that your previous notion of how the private boards worked was critically flawed. Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | Sorry for the long post, but it addresses specific issues from this whole thread. Please read. In response to some of the things trent said: The only way to get away from UER moderators is to not use UER. It's as simple as that. Reading most of the rest of what trent said, it seems like he sees private boards as some kind of "right". It is important to understand that private boards are offered by UER as a service to the community. They were originally created so that local exploration groups or teams could have a place to discuss their missions and discoveries without making them viewable to all. Private boards were never intended to be used for posting personal details, nude photos, or other "private" information. You really have no guarantees to privacy when you post that stuff on the internet, regardless of whether it is going on UER or Facebook or whatever. The reason moderators moderate the private boards is because they are a part of UER, and the UER rules and regulations apply there as well. These rules are to protect the interests of UER's owner (me), it's moderators, and all of its members. I think a more poignant question is, why SHOULDN'T they be moderated? They are just as much a part of the board as the public sections are. With that said, if you don't want moderators reading or posting in "your" private boards, take them off of UER. Remember, this is a service we provide for free -- there are no guarantees or obligations. If you don't like our rules, there's a million places where you can set up a forum for free or next to nothing to post in. Regarding the fact that trent feels the name "private board" is misleading, as Hydro pointed out, our privacy policy is clearly spelled out in a document called Privacy Policy, linked at the bottom of every single page on UER. I understand that many people don't read these documents... but that can hardly be considered our fault, can it? If you're going to post "private" or "personal" information on the internet, you should really read that website's privacy policy first. Especially since ours is human-readable and not full of legalese. There's no point in adding a "reminder" when creating a board because (1) people won't read it anyway and (2) even if they did, they'd forget, and (3) people joining the board (or being added to it) wouldn't see that reminder anyway.
Also on the point of "open-to-all" boards being in Google -- this is by design. They're open-to-all, meaning anyone can read them without logging in and without being a full member and without being a member of them. What is the point of excluding Google if there are no other restrictions? It's the same reason that the main sections of UER are available in Google -- to help people find things. The section of the privacy policy was actually written before open-to-all boards existed, but it refers to "private", non-open-to-all boards, which ARE kept out of Google. Phew! I hope this answers some questions. -av

| | | While I don't fully agree with some of those points I'm glad Av and most of the mods were able to discuss it in a reasonable manner. Thanks.

I apparently made a 'personal attack' when pointing out Trent slagged on another member who didn't like the way UER functioned and made their own board. Derp.
