Reminder: Private Boards

A quick reminder for anyone moderating or posting on a private board:

While you are free to discuss whatever you like, the rules of the forum still apply. The moderators take a more relaxed approach to moderating private boards (as in, we almost never bother with them), but we are able to freely browse the boards, and will lock/delete any threads that break certain rules (don't discuss blowing up the White House) or exist solely to attack other members of UER.

In all honesty, we could care less about what you guys are discussing, for the most part. But moderation doesn't stop at the private board "door".

If you have any questions or concerns, post 'em here or give us a shout in the "Contact a Mod" section.

How much less could we care?

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Why are they called private board when they apparently are not at all private? Calling them private only leads to confusion of what they really are: Not at all private-boards in which UER mods enjoy reading the discussions of participants in them who think no one else is listening.

So make your own forum?

Did anyone actually think universal mods couldn't see and moderate the entire forum?

1st. They are Private to just only the allowed members and the moderating team and our administrator. Just like every other forum on the internet! If you want privacy on the internet you will never find it. Best off mailing a letter.

2nd. The moderating team is just doing our job by keeping even private boards within the guidelines of our rules and regulations. Trust me, you all get lots of bending on those rules. It could really be worse.

and 3rd... What happens in the private boards remains private. We don't drag anything going on in there in to the regular forums.

Hope this helped clean things up.
Thanks

This isn't a new development. My reminder was for your benefit. If you want to discuss something in true privacy, take it offline. Again, we don't really care what you're discussing, for the most part. But, if you don't trust that (fair enough!), you should really keep your discussion off UER.

I'm only really concerned about the invite-only user run private boards which are not at all private. Obviously an administrator has full control over his server and can read anything, however in good faith he shouldn't. The actual issue is moderators poking around in these boards as they wish. I think that's silly because what is the point for UER moderators being in private boards in the first place? One reason people go to private private boards is to get AWAY from UER moderators. If the owner of the board wanted UER mods in there, he could just invite UER moderators. If a board is private, why would it need UER moderators? It's not like that discussion is going to be seen by others. Shouldn't it be up to that board owner on who moderates their 'private' board?

If inside an invite-only board a person has a problem with the postings of others in there, they don't have to remain a member there and can just leave. They still have all of normal UER to participate in where the general UER rules are followed. However, that would scenarios would probably be pretty rare though because usually private boards only invite those who they already get along with and attempt to get away from the drama. Also, if in a private board someone is disrespectful to a member not in the private board, who cares? How is that any different that saying bad things about someone outside of UER? It happens all the time.

Furthermore, I think calling them 'private boards' is misleading to users who are actually expecting privacy. Before this thread I don't think UER has ever pointed out so broadly and publicly that the private boards aren't private. It's buried in some TOS doc, but we know those rarely get read by users. So all of this time you might have had users creating private boards under the assumption of privacy while UER mods are reading everything they say. That turns into a sketchy issue with private boards covering very personal information. I know there's a lot of freaky boards and others with very personal boards out there. For example, say someone in a private board posted nude photos meant only to be seen by known invited board members. I bet that person won't be happy to know UER mods are going through his/her postings when they beleive them to be private. Even though you say moderators keep information from inside invite-only boards private, what about that person who didn't want YOU to know that information and you knowing it is just as bad as anyone else on UER knowing it?

I also find it humorous that usually the mods do bent the rules in some aspects. I've seen more disrespectful posts against members not acted on by mods in private boards than I can count. When the mods actually do act on disrespectful postings in private boards, those disrespectful postings are the ones aimed at moderators -- that's when they act. However, if the mods weren't there and stayed out of the private boards of others, there'd be no problem because they wouldn't be seeing it and people can vent in peace.

I have some suggestions for UER:

-Make it very clear to the user when they are creating an invite-only board that they should NOT expect privacy and then just continue on to moderate as you are. This is a very minimal thing you can do to not piss people off and give them false expectations as you violate what they think is privacy.

OR

-Reevaluate the rules and update them to cover proper behavior in private boards vs main UER and public user boards. I don't think a blanket set of rules for a public boards and 'private' boards exactly fits. There's complete different types of activity that you're trying to blanketly cover in the same ruleset.

-During this revamping of the rules, make it so that invite-only boards are truly run and moderated by the owner. Of course if moderation help is required, all they need to do is invite the uer mods of their choice. (It'd be even better if they could select their own moderators for their own private boards.

Please think about it.
Thank you.

See my tl;dr post above. My main issues are that when a user creates a 'private' board they're not really informed that moderators are also getting access to their board and can/will read it. That is misrepresenting what they are trying to do.

No one is/was assuming that a UER private board should uberly secured, encrypted, impenetrable, etc. However some users are looking for a reasonable amount of privacy from wandering eyes or at least being told up front that other people are getting access to their board why they create it. As far as I know this isn't happening unless you read recent threads like these for find it buried in the TOS or privacy docs.

------------

How about this. What reason(s) are there that moderators should have access to invite-only boards? Instead of me pointing out why I think it's wrong, please explain why you think it is right.

Despite what seems to be the perception, here, the mods do actually care about privacy.

Like Misfit said at the top, the mods don't go wandering around the private boards, looking for stuff. We have invite-only nude boards, and others with similarly sensitive content, and the only mods who involve themselves are those who are members.

So, how is it that stuff in private boards gets moderated?
Members of those boards report a problem.

How do you keep the mods at bay?
Easy: don't piss off the members of your private board.

I'm trying not to buy into Trent's arguments too much, here, and instead make the point that it's not trusting the mods that's the issue, but trusting that other members will put up with whatever crap you might post.

Something like that, anyway.

Despite what how you make it sound I have had a mod randomly show up in an invite-only board of mine uninvited because that mod was interested in 'stuff'. And after I expressed my displeasure that same mod posted in my board again uninvited. From my first hand experience I can't be convinced of mods being concerned about privacy as you claim they do. They can't be grouped together as a whole. Some mods do things other mods don't.

Besides my first hand example of mods being where they don't belong how do you know some moderator isn't watching some private boards they are not invited to? What's to stop them from do it? They only sure way is to monitor webserver logs or just don't give them access to.

"So, how is it that stuff in private boards gets moderated?

I don't even think the mods time should be wasted by problems from private boards. Let the board owner take care of it and give him the ability to appoint his own mods for his private board.

Moderators should be open to the aspect of not having to moderate private boards, only the ones they belong to. It's less work right?

Why do you think moderators should be able to see peoples private boards? What reason is there?

Or why would you even be against warning creators of invite-only boards at creation that what they are creating is not at all private even though it's referred to as a 'private' board? For lack of a better term, this all sounds a bit voyeuristic (the non-sexual definition of the word) to me.

A valid complaint, and I would post this in Contact a Mod.

Besides my first hand example of mods being where they don't belong how do you know some moderator isn't watching some private boards they are not invited to?

You're always at the mercy of site administration, or even your hosting provider. Like DW said, it's a risky proposition to expect privacy on the internet.

Moderators should be open to the aspect of not having to moderate private boards, only the ones they belong to. It's less work right?

The problem is, people have complaints against board owners, too.

What it comes down to, ultimately, is that there are some fairly basic terms of service, and it goes both ways. If users are expected to abide by the rules, then they can reasonably expect that those rules will be enforced when they themselves make a complaint, whether it's in the main boards or private ones.
