The Urban Adventure Site

The Industrial Giant3rd February 2002

The Industrial Giant has to be the best single building I have explored, on a par with City Power. While on a smaller site than the Burwood Brick Works, this huge building has far more under cover space. There is about three times as much floor space as City Power. But unlike City Power, the building is very easily accessible once you are inside. It is possible to roam through the huge complex without opening doors at all.

Sadly, the Industrial Giant is being demolished. By the time this goes online, the building will be gone. Which is why I risked a sneak look inside. A friend told me that the place was being torn down, so I rushed up to see it.

Strangely, the building was patrolled by security guards. My mate talked with one of them. He was not about to let me or my mate on site. So, knowing the building was due to be demolished soon, I decided to sneak in. It was a risky job entering into the building knowing a security guard was on site. My friend sat in his car watching the security guard while I snuck under the fence and into the complex. For almost an hour and a half I wandered the place, taking as many photos as I could. It was not what I call exploring, more like documenting. Many of the photos were taken without looking through the camera, because I was on the lookout for people. Twice I spotted workmen walking through the complex. I hid for a little while and then took more photos.

Finally, my mobile phone buzzed, the security guard was starting a patrol. Having explored most of the building I was satisfied I had captured the best parts. I had taken over 200 photos in the time I was in the building, but even then I worried if they were enough. I would have loved to have a video camera. The thought of a short tour between the massive main rooms left me wishing I had one. The massive empty rooms of the interior of the place were worth the risk. There were 6 main massive rooms that could have housed anything from jet airliners to a rave party to end all rave parties. The place would have been wicked to play phaser strike in.

The place has been split up into sections for easier display.

In the last days of the building I snuck in again to take some more images
