Cambridge Battery Access?
< on 12/4/2009 7:13 AM >

In Point Pleasant at the Cambridge Battery, grown in behind some bushes on the left side of the stairs is a piece of ply wood loosely pinned over a large opening in the wall. Has anyone gained access to the inside or used the smaller holes in the wall to get some pictures of the inside?

Apparently N250cc got in there a couple years ago, it apparently doesn't go in very far, more or less a small alcove. Probably to store ammunition for the gun that was once above it.

Hrm, sounds about right.

Do you know of any pictures that exist of the battery before it became so... overgrown?

Question for Nootz:

You seem to have been to all the places i can access on the DB, so I've gathered this may be a question for you.

York Redoubt, if you head off the road into the woods leading to york shore battery, there are a few concrete entrances sticking up out of the ground with ladders, scattered through the undergrowth. They're filled with rocks and old rotted wood. Are these just part of a drainage system you think, or a system of tunnels leading to the battery?

Also heard talk of a tunnel leading towards the water behind the black iron doors at the BCP. Any truth in this? Has anyone been able to access it?

Thanks,

- Jon

There's only one foundation that I'm aware of near the YSB that has any access where I've never been yet, and it's in the open area just before the battery. I got on top of it, there's a hole, but never been inside, as the debris inside looks like it might collapse if I try to go down. But I don't recall any of these foundations having ladders? And no, there's no tunnel leading towards the water, I've been inside the BCP, there is a bunker below it, but access is impossible now, as the only entrance we found is now welded shut.

It's the front of the battery, where the woods/hill is now.

The 14th picture in the YR Historic gallery just confirmed something for me:
there are doorways into the area under the main gun battery under the grassy hilled area.

The entrance of the tunnel going down to the outside of the wall is plywood walled a certain distance before the stairs, possibly doors for the ones on either side have been walled over?

No, if you go there say on the weekend, just to the right of the sallyport there's a bit of concrete sticking out of the hill with two holes in it. If you look inside there, or take a picture of the inside, there are stairs leading down about 8 feet, then a corridor to the left and right. I always figured there was a door there, but that picture in the DB just confirmed it for me. This is the only pic I was able to find (not very helpful):

Here's one from inside one of those bits of concrete you're talking about, i took it a few months ago.

It's a little bit of a better view, but still not much detail. Next time I go out, I'll put the strap on my camera so I can use it as a landyard, and put the camera all the way inside that hole.
