Old WPA bathhouse in Pawnee, OK.

Aww man, that's on the "lake" in Pawnee isn't it? We had family reunions on that lake every year thru my childhood.

Cool picture!

What I found the other night stumbling around the woods looking for something else. I apologize for the shoddy photos. It was getting REALLY late, I was tired, and not to mention it was dark, and I still had over 3 miles to walk back.

An interesting discovery. Old munition storage bunker.

A closer look.

Sticking my arm inside the door for a look.

...the wings on my shoes shrank now the moths won't eat my kidneys, when i shake my state capital it only yields 3 fairy napkins, but how do i know my banana slippers are like water boats because when the moon winks it burns my hamster punches, and that's how you get to llama school rowing your canoe backwards up main street when the front bumper falls off, do mermaids get to drink orange juice?

I was wondering when you would find one of those. There are about 50 of them in those woods.

Though I'm curious, what else could you have been possibly looking for??

New lead on POW camp.

Sweet! But good luck! There is next to zero information on that entire area, rumors and hearsay are all I can ever dig up. I mean, the government uses several square miles, then poof, no records except for some very plain statements and of course the physical structures.

I've actually dug up a little info on the matter. The Pryor camp was one of approximately 34 in the state during WWII. Oklahoma was chosen because of it's location inland from the coasts. There was an article written in the Daily Oklahoman on Nov. 16, 1987 and another list of the camps and census numbers that was published in "The Chronicles of Oklahoma" Spring 1986 as part of an article authored by Richard S. Warner. I'm hoping to get some more evidence and some shots, eventually, of it all and make a post about it all. Still a work in progress. But hey, that's half of the fun.

Very cool. I tried finding the one that had been near Tonkawa but didn't find zilch.

Yeah, not much left if anything of most. There was a bigger camp out at Alva where there actually was a small skirmish. It was listed as the only time Americans ever fought Germans on home soil. It happened on Jan. 15, 1945 and was dubbed the "Battle of Alva". It was reported in the Daily Oklahoman on Jan. 22, 1945. 64 Americans against approx. 1400 German POWs. The Germans held there were mainly former members of Rommel's famed Afrika Korps

There was even one in far south Tulsa, kind of around were BA and Bixby meet. There are no longer any traces of it left. Many of those POW camps were just that, camps, nothing really permanent. Many were on farms and were labor camps that just housed POW's.

However the one in Pryor may be a different story. There are a couple of old grave yards in that specific area you were in Surd, I would start looking around those...

Yup, there's 2 of them. Got them marked for investigation on my next trip.

That would be a fun hike out there to just find some remains of them.

Hike? yes. Fun? Not so much. There is so much undergrowth that it makes it very difficult to navigate. Fortunately I'm built like a bulldozer and able to plow my way through most of it. If you're interested sometime we could make a trip out there.

Cordless Sawzall with a fast cut wood blade and extra battery. A bi-metal blade is always handy for other pesky obstacles.

A Sandvic works great, I wish I still had one. Sometimes I miss my Sandvic and Bola, both work great in Brush.

Sorry all that I derailed the thread. So, to get us back on somewhat of a bent and windy track, here you go. One I took back in July out at Calpine.
