Obviously drinking and drugs alters your state of mind, but some people like intoxicants and some don't. Some can handle themselves better and some can't. People have their choices to do what they want while exploring and that in itself it was makes us all unique explorers.

Its not about liking or disliking intoxicants, its about when it is wise to use them.

One of the big rationales of explorers as a whole is that our hobby is harmless. We go, we see, we take pictures, we leave. Yes, we always have a risk of accident, but going while not in proper control of your abilities is placing yourself at higher risk for an accident. If you're exploring with others, now you've placed the others at higher risk. If something happens, it isn't just you, now you may have to be rescued, so you're placing others in risk again.

Plain stupidity isn't harmless.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

I agree with your above statement 100%, but people are going to make their own choices and unfortunately that's something that neither you, i, or anyone else is going to be able to change. Some people are dumb, some people are stupid and some people frankly shouldn't be explorers, but it's all about the personal choices we make.

and not all substances impair your abilities persay. I doubt 30mg Mixed amphetamine salts with a delay release (Adderall XR) would tend to make anyone's abilities lessened in short term...infact, I bet it would work to the opposite effect. (of course, then comes the crash and all but by that time you should be out of harms way)

Sure, exploring new condos and going out on crane spans, probably isn't a great idea. But I'd bet that exploring the main floor of brickworks with w a couple of beers probably isn't any more dangerous than walking home from the bar.

And if the other people you are exploring with are drinking too, you aren't putting them at anymore risk then they are of you.

How could you explore a Molson Brewery without helping yourself to a beer or two?

Except for the rescue squad you put in jeopardy if they have to rescue someone? Having multiple people with lowered reflexes and reasoning just means its a higher chance of one of them screwing up.

It all boils down to what you happen to be "on" and what you happen to be doing. There's a huge difference between someone smoking a little joint and checking out an abandoned house and someone drinking a bunch of beers and attempting to jump from rooftops.

I'm guessing the guy that survived will have issues for the rest of his life.

i assume he will have a difficult life for quite some time.
i also thought this thread was being used to discuss the incident but it seems everyone just wants to talk about intoxication during an explore. maybe we should start a new thread for that discussion? it is an interesting one.
i say this because the discussion has switched focus from the main point of this thread which is the unfortunate accident and death of a fellow citizen.

Yeah its amazing how fast threads can derail. Me being guilty of it sometimes, as others are aswell.

I like to think of explorers as one big disfunctional family. When something happens to a fellow explorer it sends a shockwave through and really stirs everybody up. The news of this girls death was a huge shock and awe to myself.

Like i said in an earlier post, my condolences go out to her friends and family. I do hope they're getting by in this time of mourning.

And once again, the Ontario forum is the center of drama on UER. What a surprise.

spend more time in the northeast forum and you'll probably find yourself more surprised by this.

What a way to go. I'm really surprised someone hasn't gone down like this in HRPC.
