And we can see that this punishment of physically beating their own child was very effective at dissuading you.. for the rest of one season, after which you are now an active member on a UE website. Beating your kids sure is effective! LOL

I parked behind a (lame) abandonment once for just 15 minutes. When I came back to the car, there were FIVE cop cars parked around mine. They harassed Aurelie and I for about 15 minutes. I gave them permission to search the car. Eventually they just let us go.

And Shawn W, Lord Awesome and I got caught in St Louis in an abandonment. Mind you, we had been VERY obvious going in. There were five cops. They patted us down, harassed us for about 30 minutes, told us they were going to give us trespassing tickets, and then didn't. They wrote down our names and that's it.

Those are the worst two encounters I've ever had out of a LOT of successful explores. It's extremely rare that you hear about anyone getting arrested, and I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting any more than a small fine, if even that, when they go to court. If you do hear about explorers going to jail, they were invariably doing something more than trespassing or usually even breaking and entering.

  • Know the difference between trespassing and B&E
  • Don't bring anything illegal with you while exploring
  • Explore sober
  • Bring your ID
  • Don't tag or trash places...or bring paint or markers
  • Don't take ANYTHING
  • Watch this YouTube video...three times: http://www.youtube...atch?v=yqMjMPlXzdA

Do those things, and you'll be completely FINE.

That's a pretty informative video, stuff to remember for sure, I'll have to do a little cross-checking to make sure everything here ad hears to Canadian law. I don't see how it could stray too far from it though.

Thanks for the advice. Getting caught is something that's always in the back of my mind when I'm on the prowl and I'd like to keep my criminal record as squeaky clean as possible.

This may sound ridiculous, but a few years back my wife and I hopped a "no trespassing" fence which had an abandoned farm behind it. (She was also pregnant, which was the ridiculous part lol)

So we checked out the ruins, wandered around a bit, then headed back to the fence where our car was.

We were almost back when I saw a glitter in the sunlight up ahead- sure enough, it was a white van and a guy opening the door to step out and wait on us.

So here we were, walking back the last 100 metres straight towards this van and a guy waiting there with his arms crossed. We had to go this way; it was the only way out and back to our vehicle.

So, we hopped the fence again (my wife was 7 months pregnant) as he watched us. He gave us the most evil look in the world as I said "how ya doin" when we walked past him. No idea who he was or how he even knew we were there-- we're guessing that there must have been surveillance cameras or censors or something, because there was nothing else in the area- just an abandoned farm at the end of a long, dead-end concession road.

So, we left him behind and walked across the road to another trail which led deep in the woods (this was now a public hiking trail). We spent a good 1.5 hours hiking this path. When we came back to the car again-- this guy was STILL there waiting on us.

Kind of freaked us out a bit-- to make matters worse, we got in our car, drove back towards town on the concession road and he actually followed us in his van for a good few kilometers. Eventually he slowed down and let us go.

Wow- we never went back to that location again lol. We'd still like to know who he was, though! And how he knew we were there!!

The other time I was caught trespassing but one of the fellows I was with had hilarious pocket content and made the police laugh, so we were let off with a warming.

Where can I get some of that hilarious pocket content for future reference?

I was somewhere that I shouldn't have been with two friends. One was climbing a structure, the other was holding the rope (on belay) for him. I was videotaping the experience. We witnessed a couple of Police Cruisers approaching at a high rate of speed, they went flying past us only about 100 feet away but due to a very large concrete barrier they couldn't easily reach us. They had to drive to an entrance road about a kilometer away and double back towards us. Unable to get down and away in time, my friends told me to leave. I quickly snuck away and after running several hundred feet, I cautiously approached the concrete barrier. Just as I stuck my head up from the barrier to see if the road was clear, a police crusier slammed on his brakes and screeched to a stop. With no place to go, I just sat down on the barrier and waited for the car to reverse back to me.

    Officer rolled down his window.....

    Cop "What are you doing?"
    Me "Just sitting here"
Cop "What is in your hand?"
    Me "Videocamera"
    Cop "GET IN!"

No charges, but we will not be returning to that bridge anytime soon LOL

Exploring a old youth prison, Two native people drive up and ask us (me and a friend) if we are breaking anything or playing paintball. we told them we were just looking around. They said that lots of people were playing paintball and destroying the place so the just wanted to make sure we weren't doing that. Then we started talking about the place with them. cool people, and only time I have kind of been caught.

Had the guns drawn on me because the place I was in had been getting illegally scrapped for a month straight. Police had been staking out the place for a while and watched me go right in. They absolutely could not believe all I had was photography equipment in my bag and I was only there to take pictures. I got a trespassing ticket which was reduced to a disorderly conduct. I definitely pick a choose my battles a little more cautious now. I have waited out security and police a couple of times besides that though, but all previously to being arrested.

I was glared at by a herd of buffalo. But the only way to the location was through them. Buffalo are fucking scary from ten meters away man.
Not only that, the owner of the property busted me after and asked:
    "what are you doing here?"
    me-"photographing"
    "for what?"
me-"nothing, just like the buildings here"
"you know there are buffalo all over the place, right? they're skittish."
me-"yeah, I noticed. thanks for the heads up, I'm keeping my distance. Plus one of them glared at me"
"okay well I'm going to go explore these buildings, this is my parents property. see you later"
me-"you might want to watch the gym, the roof collapsed. k bye"

I laughed so hard when she said she wanted to go explore. good times.

Only time I've been "caught" officially was when I was cutting through a yard with my friend. His douchebag neighbour decided to call the cops because there were large men dressed in black peering into his windows. We were chilling in the marsh below, when some cops came running through the reeds and told us to go back to the cruiser. Obviously being thirteen (this was a few years ago), we had no idea what the fuck was going on. When they realized we [a.] weren't burglars and [b.] weren't large and dressed like creeps, they laughed and let us off.

Other than that, haven't been caught. Have had to run from some rent-a-cops at a concrete foundry where we were climbing the gravel towers, but that's about it.
(Oddly enough we were fine the time my friend Jonah tried to start a bulldozer and was honking the horn...)

Got chased by a police boat once, that was fun.

A group of us were trying a new way into the abandoned malt factory by the lakeshore in TO (now being torn down, alas). It wasn't a very smart way, as it involved a twelve foot ladder, but we were blocked on all sides by the mass of the building itself with the lake to our backs... so of course we figured we'd be fine. Then I notice some interesting floating lights out on the water that seemed to be getting closer and closer. Then a spotlight blooms out at us. I'm already flat in the grass, but two more of us are at various heights up the ladder and staring like spooked raccoons. We were back in the car in about 40 seconds and gone.

Funny part is, later that morning day the oil light pops on in the car, so we pull into a gas station, and while the driver's getting some 10w30 some random bum comes up and starts chatting with us. A pair of bike cops coast by, go around the corner, and come right back... they then proceed to take our IDs, tear the car apart, and record our life stories for the next hour. When they find nothing incriminating and no outstanding warrants, they tell us the reason they stopped us is because that bum was a known crack dealer and they thought we were making a purchase. They then sent us on our merry way. Ah, the joys of UE in Toronto.

    wormgear -noun, verb (slang)
    1. Boots, coveralls, and other frequently muddy gear worn by drainers ("Take off your filthy worm gear!")
    2. The act of getting unstuck in a corrugated metal pipe, in which case the only escape is having your buddies spin you around like a corkscrew

I hear a lot of people mentioning shit like this.

    Dropped, not prosecuted, ect.

    It doesnt really mean shit.

You have to go through the extra step, after, to have your arrest expunged.

They maintain a database of "non-conviction arrest data" and it is readily available to any law enforcement official and if you try to cross US-Canadian boarder they can also see YOUR ARRESTS. They can deny you entry based off your arrests. Oddly enough you do not have the right to request this data.

If you ever have reason to apply for a security clearance it also comes back on you.

In todays world, they dont have to convict you to treat you like a criminal.

It will also make it more likely for the next cop to cite you on shaky evidence.

Don't fuck around and get caught.

When i was in scouts we decided jump the fence not far from our campground and check out a local airport / abandoned helicopter pad. One of my friends decided to take a blue runway light off a working runway. As soon as he takes the blue light there is a blinding white light underneath it. I guess people in the control tower saw this sudden change in colour and sent the airport cops pdq to our area.
We took off towards the woods, hid for a couple of hours until we thought the heat was off. Turns out they were waiting for us at camp. We got beat with a canoe paddle from our scoutmaster and turned over to our parents who beat us some more. Fun times in the mid 80's.

That runway light still has a hallowed place in our scout hut next to the Mcdonalds flag (another story) and that canoe paddle that beat my ass.

Kids need to be beat more these days.

Not exactly a "worst", but I couldn't decide whether this is better fitted for here or hilariously pathetic security measures.

Recently, a friend and I went draining, trying to finish up a place I discovered back in October. Stopping for some obligatory Mighty Taco on the way, my friend happened to notice that the car parked next to his had a licence plate "P0 L1 C3", being an otherwise ordinary, middle-aged Buick. We remarked that it was the lamest "undercover" impostor we had ever seen, being such a pitiful old car with a semi-1337 plate. A few minutes later, as we're putting on our waders and getting ready to go in the drain, P0 L1 C3 shows up again, and out comes a fully uniformed officer of the law, and a high ranking one at that from the stripes on his shoulders. He asks what we're doing, and I tell him I'm an engineering student at Rochester, and that we're walking the creek studying corrosive and erosive effects on bridge columns. He suggests that the creek itself is a muddy mess, but acknowledges that since we have waders, we probably know that, and that if we don't mind getting wet we're also right by a tunnel, even though it isn't the creek I said I was trying to study (not my city, I don't know every last trickle of water's proper name). Then he shows us the drain entrance, tells us a bit about its history, and leaves us to go in (after first making sure we have enough light sources to find our way back out), recommending that afterward we try the one under the expressway, there's much bigger bridges and tunnels there...
