| | | Posted by FerretWithASpork I'm not looking to get it published by some reputable publisher, if you read the main post I'm just trying to learn self-publishing techniques.
|
Good on ya. It's a fun and exciting process. But most people do this with their own photography. A lot of people may not want to just give away their images, but I bet you could find a small group of people to work with here at first to do some experiments. Try PMing people who's photography you like with the idea.
Posted by FerretWithASpork and for a 100+ page hardcover professionally printed/bound book.. $30 is pretty damn cheap.
|
I looked into this a couple years ago. I've seen a number of these kinds of books too. A lot of these DIY book services are not really designed for art photography. I never found one that I liked. Maybe the tech has improved over the last couple years . . . My advice is to throw a 25 pager together with a wide variety of types of images (color, B&W, vivid, subdued, light, dark, etc.) and do one and see what you get WRT quality. No need to bind it or make covers at this point. Just find a printer you are satisfied with first. [last edit 2/27/2008 6:39 PM by LostAmerica - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by LostAmerica I personally think the time is extremely ripe for "An overview of the different types of UE locations" project with 100 images by 25 different photographers and a bitchen essay by some up and coming young Lester Bangs of UE . . . but even if you could organize a party like that and keep it from melting down in an explosion of fragile and dominating artistic egos, and THEN convincing a reputable publisher that it's viable to sell 15k copies . . . fuhgedaboutit.

that's the price of the book itself, factor in distribution costs of an item that's not really light.
|
Distribution is usually the problem. Distributors will not pay you in full even after they have your product --only until they have sold it all. This is the one reason I never published a magazine I wanted to years ago. Try chasing someone down in a foreign country to get your payments. Nightmares! I've had friends lose thousands of $$

I'd imagine shipping and handling would be... $6-10 each... now we're lookin at $40.. You're right major expensive! Okay this thread is gone.. close it off... (sarcasm) CLARIFICATION: This is not going to be a book that I put together and send off to get hundreds of copies made and then have to worry about the investment and selling them all, this is an ON DEMAND print service, I make the book, I sent it to them, and NOTHING GETS PRINTED UNLESS YOU ORDER A BOOK. I, we, he, they, anyone who contributed would not pay a SINGLE PENNY unless they bought the book. [last edit 2/27/2008 11:06 PM by FerretWithASpork - edited 1 times]

I don't think FerretWithASpork gets how complicated this is. Maybe if he wants a committee of people to overlook the project he should try to organize that first.

| | | Does a print on demand book really require a committee? Ferret, just start a new thread once you've chosen a PoD service and worked out all the details. Tell people who are interested to give you up to 5-10 images that are large enough to print. Also PM people who's stuff you like. Set it up so that any profits go towards a charitable organization (maybe something dedicated to historical preservation?) and you're good to go. You probably won't get too many responses because no one knows who the hell you are, but I'm sure you'll get enough to fill up fifty pages or so. Keep in mind that it took close to a year for this site to create a calendar so don't expect a completed book in your hands anytime soon.

| | | Committees are bullshit. That it took a year to get a calendar done here only proves that out. A project will never happen unless one person (like the ferret) takes control of it. Everyone else is just along for the ride. Do what Micro said. There will be no profits because it's print-on-demand, just charge cost to any buyers. The only buyers will be participants anyway. But again, to start with 10-20 pages using different types of images (light, dark, B&W, color etc.) as a test run to find a printer you'll be happy with. That should be the first goal.

| | | If your doing this for a bit of DTP experience - why not just put the book together (using any photos from anywhere) and leave it at that? Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

Well how would that happen if you didn't publish it? (note I said 'leave it at that') Chris...

Or better yet, just take some of your own photos with a crappy cam and then do the layout yourself. You seem pretty vague about the whole thing, so at the very least you should outline clearly how you intend to do this, involving other people who have to entrust you with their work.

| | | Wow.. This issue has been beat to death, so I'll kick it! It seems to me this would be more effective if you chose a theme for your on demand book. That is to say if you came on UER and said I want to publish a raft of military bases into a book... That could be interesting, but just having a random collection from a bunch of random UE photographers seems to lack a common thread. The point that LostAmerica made about running a test of the publisher before you go too far into this is a good one! Otherwise if you put this time into collecting and laying out this book only to discover the quality sucks... See my point?!
