| | | | UER Photo Book < on 2/26/2008 12:34 AM >
| | | I'm just learning about some Self Publishing stuff and looking to practice and I was wondering what the response would be like to maybe making a book with a collection of photos from the UER community. I'm not looking to make money off this, I don't think much money would be made, I'm just looking to practice layout design, learn the ins and outs of self publishing, and see the end results. If this does end up happening I'm not sure if it would be sold publically or only to the contributors, it would be up to you guys I guess. I'll get more in depth after I see what the response is like. Q: Why don't you use your own photos? Honestly I've only been to one location and I have about 4 or 5 pictures that I would consider publishing.. what a great book that would make... I know I'm not very experienced in UE and I know I'll be criticized for that, but I am experienced in Photography and that's what the book would be about. I'm not looking to make a How-to, or a storybook, or a "why we do what we do"... I'm looking to make a collection of beautiful photos with UE as the main theme. Q: Would every photo be selected? No, there would have to be some sort of selection process, You should only publish your best photos. Selection could happen one of several ways: 1: The editor(ME!) gets final say in what's included. 2: A panel of people (Either A. my friends or B. a bunch of amazin' UER photographers) votes 3: We hold public polls (lengthy, messy, process) Most likely it would be either 1 or 2A [last edit 2/26/2008 2:37 AM by FerretWithASpork - edited 2 times]

| | | i think this is an interesting idea, but i'm not sure how i'd feel about it if it were sold publicly. i've actually thought about this idea myself, but i think it might just make more people aware that this happens, and people would start making these sites more and more difficult to get into by securing buildings more effectively and hiring security even if it is just photos you're publishing. i do think it's a neat idea, and if it were sold internally throughout UER it might be a cool idea, but i'm just not sure, at this time, we could assess the repercussions of selling it publicly... I agree. If you are asking us to let you use our photos, I for one will let you as long as I receive credit and stuff. I think its a neat idea. Sales on UER and/or UA would be a great first start!

| | | That's one thing I was thinking about too, and I was thinking that I don't want this to be anything for profit, I just want it to be a thing where someone can be like "Look my photo was published!!!" ya know. I just want to be able to see my photo in a professionally made book and I think a lot of people would love the same Edit:

I was planning on letting each photo contributor choose to either have just their UER username displayed, or their full name. Also it would be possible to include a little blurb about the photo. [last edit 2/26/2008 1:31 AM by FerretWithASpork - edited 1 times]

| | | You can always contribute to the UE calendar program, instead of putting out books. Books are expensive to make and hard to sell.

If you guys need any help I'm more than willing. I know InDesign if you need any layout help, other than that I don't know what you need. Also I'm mainly doing this just to learn about self-publishing. And pricing: blurb.com: 81-120 page Hardcover: $29.95 (whole price chart found at http://www.blurb.c.../pricing?tag=3_btn) lulu.com: 8.5” x 11” - $25.95 for 20 pages/$0.50 for each additional page/($10 for an additional 20 pages) createspace.com: 40+ pages = 1.75/book + 0.12/page (I'm sure it's more than that...) Those prices are pretty reasonable.

Actually that post was meant for Glass Wrong Quote ;) I meant to say to you: Yeah thats one problem I was trying to figure out a solution for, If I were to have to pay royalties to everyone I'd be sending out a bunch of checks each month, unless the company could autopay royalties to several people which I'm not sure about. If we kept it internal that wouldn't be a problem, we'd all buy a wholesale and there'd be no profit, either that or maybe a +$5 profit per book that gets donated to UER.ca?

This is NOT a good idea. Have you not seen the self portraits thread? enough said. I would sooner pay to see peeling paint and wheel chairs. Actually, I would just buy porn instead.

| | | If you're going to do this, just make sure you have an editor who can take the photos (and contextual text), and organise it into a coherent whole. Take a look at Troy Paiva's (first) book, for example.
