| | Ottawa locations? < on 1/21/2007 1:46 AM >
| | | Hey, I was just kind of wondering.. I live in the East end (without a car) and I was wondering what places I could go exploring near Montfort Hospital (i.e Near where I live), excluding CFB Rockliffe. I checked in the DB, and it seems like there's not really places in the east. Thanks, Deenoe

| | | All of the locations I've been to were within reaonable walking distance of a bus stop. Living in the west end, I've had no problems bussing out to St Laurent for an exploration.

| | | One thing I've learned with this hobby is that there are things changing constantly around us. There are some spots I wish I had found earlier since they are now demolished or being demolished. The attitude "there's nothing around here" often causes us to miss out on what's right under our noses. Make use of Google Earth. This tool is a great way to spot potential locations with overgrowth, lack of vehicles, or damaged roofs. I now have a list of about 10 places to check out within 30 minutes of the border in New York State. Trust me, it's almost like driving around.

This is some of the best useful information that you can possibly get.... Then again this doesn't always work, since google earth isn't always for some areas. Ottawa has an excellent transit system ride the bus, and go around your city get to know it first.
By the way Abacab, that is one killer avatar....

I've accepted the fact that anywhere between 40-60% of the places I have checked out turn out to be duds. As long as you are prepared for this and have multiple locations to check out, you should be fine. I've had days where I've checked out several locations with no luck.
By the way Abacab, that is one killer avatar....

| | | Hi everyone ! Just wanted to follow up as I am also seeking (new) locations to explore. I am new to the site (within the past month), also without a car, but have been a UEr at heart since I can't remember when. It was only recently that I discovered that I am not alone in my crazy addiction and it is reassuring to find so many fellow explorers, even in Ottawa of all places !!! Will be in and out for the next few weeks as I just moved to Wellington West and am trying to get my home in order before anything else. However, I have learned recently to never be without my camera. Hopefully, this will pay off and I will be able to post some interesting things here in the near future. One other thing ... I noticed that while other cities have UE events and get-togethers, they are strangely absent from the Ottawa scene. Is this because there is just not much to see around here or is it just because no one wants to bother ? As a rookie UEr, I can tell you that I am looking for anything that will help me become a better explorer (I recently bought Ninjalicious' book Access All Areas and it is so far, a very good read), if only to meet fellow explorers.

Ottawa definitely has locations, but the large industrial ones tend to be within an hours drive away, the exception being a mill in Buckingham which is about 20 minutes from downtown. Also, a lot of Ottawa's locations are short lived due to the booming local economy. It seems the local UE community lacks the young blood that we see in Toronto and Montreal. A lot of us 30 somethings are too busy to be super-active. I made it into a great winter hobby and went nuts with new locations, but now there's so much other stuff to do. The disadvantage of a small community is the lack of meets, but the advantage lies in being the first, and often the only one to explore new places. I'd say at least 1/3 of the locations I've created haven't been explored by anyone else other than local kids. Vandalism is very low here also, and tagging is fairly rare. Some people like myself want to see more newbies, while others would rather stick with the status quo out of fear of the landowners cracking down on explorers.

| | | I'm up for more incursions. I can also provide rides. Just no roller coasters though. Another new location is a house at 976 Hunt Club Road near Downpatrick. The doors are locked, but it's a matter of time before the local kids break the windows.

| | | There are still a bunch of boarded up houses on Innes between Jeanne D'Arc and H'orleans Boulevard. A frigging DC8 in a field as well. A bunch of schools and a couple larger structures in the Ottawa area. Hide and Seek!
