Found a brown 412 wagon in the forest like 5 years ago while I was dirt biking... with a Datsun 510 piled next to it. The 412 was broken in half because of rust. I came back that night with a Caravan and a trailer, cut the rest of the roof in half with an axe, and brought the back half home to rescue the engine for the Porsche 914 I was building at the time.
Actually ended up stripping the 510 a few years ago to get all the missing bits for my old 510 rally car.
The VW Quantum was sold from '81-'88, and called the Passat in Europe. They're rare as rocking horse shit.

Love love LOVE rat-rod VWs. There was a really nice sliding ragtop Beetle on my local craigslist, original faded white paint, slammed on gloss red steelies, it was gorgeous. Can't find it now, of course.
And I saw a shortie VW bus in New Orleans last week, though it was shortened a good bit more than that...That thing had to have had a wheelbase of 36".

As a purist, I HATE HATE HATE rat rod VWs so much... SO MUCH.
At least the ones with removed fenders and chopped roofs and shit. Flat black bugs that are slammed on red wheels are acceptable, at least it's still a whole Bug. I just hate seeing my favorite car ever made get hacked up and molested to look like some piece of shit.

There is ( or atleast was, its been since I was in highschool) a "split window" beetle in the swamps here in campobello. Pretty much rotted into the ground, if its nice this weekend, and I can get out there with my freakin back still kinda screwed, I'll see if its still there. I remember when we first saw it the thing was pretty much complete. But the last time I saw it most of it was stripped out and it had been used as target practice. Thats been 10 years ago, I can't believe much is left by now.

Actually, I agree completely. I love rat-rod VWs, but only if they still look like Beetles. Flat black or patina/rust over original paint + lowered + red rims is about as far as it needs to go.
