And yes, i have heard from sewer workers that there are passable unsanitary sewers in Oak Bay. Still looking into that one, so can't say for sure yet.

Thanks!
I honestly don't understand the whole 'wading through other people's shit' thing, re: draining. Uplands people are generally wealthy, so maybe their shit isn't as rank as the shit in say Rock Bay. But who knows? It's all shit. |
I'm sure it smells like privilege and oppression. It would be cool to get in at the water and follow the east coast bypass if possible.

I can't imagine that it's high on anyone's priority list.

Well, it's on MY list. Just not the er, .......highest priority.

I've been scoping out around Casey's in south OB. Many promising manholes...

Nice work Ferrum. That rumor about B**g Street, about the massive man made cavernous space under that street. It may warrant investigation. And that Raleigh just needs a gallon of WD 40 and a new seat, and maybe tyres...

ahemm ,, Im hearing rumor that a tunnel is under the old chapel at the RJH hospital , the homeless man that I spoke to said he was a janitor there in the 50's he said the door was alwase locked there ,,and oddly enough chanting sounds were herd from this entrance occasionally ,, I politely gave the man a toonie and wished him a good day ,, mabie another good lead ?

Thanks! I'll be check out that area tomorrow...

A new chain too... I was thinking about making it the official Drain Bike. You wouldn't need brakes since if you went too fast you'd fall anyways. In any case its on the river bank if someone wants to fix it up.

My mother's worked there for 30 years. I'm gonna see what she has to say...

Get a cheap brake set and put it on the front wheel. Otherwise you'll be zipping along and see a log in the way and have to jump...

A log. In a drain. If this is the case, brakes really aren't going to make a difference.

Damn that was a lot of posts took me a week of reading in my spare time after work to muddle through it all. I've been in Victoria for about 10 yrs now and had heard about the tunnels but was under the impression they were just under Chinatown. I inadvertently stumbled on this thread while looking up info on the paranormal an area I'm um...a bit better versed in. Needless to say I was quickly intrigued by your posts and stories of your explorations. Unfortunately, my schedule doesn't leave me much time or energy to do any exploring myself so I shall have to live vicariously through tales of your exploits below. I'm always up for a bit of internet research if you ever have any call for help along those lines. Oh and about that high stakes poker game that takes place in a room under Chinatown I saw mentioned a couple times ...I can confirm its there and tell you it's existence is not really much of a secret and can even point you towards the proper door however I wouldn't recommend trying it without knowing the "secret" knock or having a sizable bankroll to play with as last I'd heard the average pot was somewhere around $150K and the other visitors you might encounter down there aren't exactly the most savory of characters.

NinjaKlutz, I found a passable (ex) SS yesterday. Didn't go in though.

An "ex" sanitary sewer? That's interesting. I know that there's lots of small abandoned ones, but as far as the maps at Uvic say, there aren't any passable ones in the district of victoria that are abandoned. Nice find.
|
|
And just one thing: be careful when opening sanitary sewer manhole covers. There are many stories of sewer workers who don't follow proper protocols, open the manholes, then built up H2S gas comes pouring out, and they faint. If the gas dissipates before it kills them, then they often fall and clobber their heads, and often falling head-first down the manhole shaft and dying instantly. Honestly, if you don't know how to test air properly, then it's probably a good idea to leave these particular manholes alone.

That's an excellent suggestion, and I urge you to take it very seriously. Go back to page whatever, where Peterman and crew discuss the massive tunnel we found...page 80 something, I think. Part of the planning that went into that gig included a gas meter, which without such a device, none of us would have gone forward.

Indeed. How does one acquire such a device without being a professional who needs one? The particular pipe I found has been inactive since the early ninties and is only used for storm water/overflow now. It runs half buried for about 300m with manholes every 50m or so and then goes underground to who knows where. How dangerous does that sound vs what you guys accomplished?

Reasonably safe, generally, however...if this thing has been inactive blah blah blah, what are the chances that it's received regular maintenance? A better question might be 'when was the last time a person went down to inspect it'? Whatever. Don't go alone. Get a meter. Let me know how it works out.

Now I'm reluctant to go without someone more experienced than my fiends who have joined me so far.I think I may leave that one alone for the time being while I get to the other drains I haven't visited yet. No sense in getting in over my head; I am still a rookie.
