Exactly . Unfortunately we have a whole new generation of "urbexers" more interested in their short term Instagram results. Fleeting fame as it were.
|
There is no fame in urbex but sure maybe one of the millions of people who have a camera in their pocket will get famous from an app
Stealth: adj. designed in accordance with technology that makes detection difficult. Wraith: n. A wisp or faint trace of something |

The one time i’ve been caught, it was a neighborhood watch kinda guy, the one thing he was really worried about is if i had taken anything. You know what would’ve happen if i did? He would’ve called the police. All moral dilemmas aside, stealing things is certain to make law enforcement treat you as you should be treated, a thief.

True story. Better off sticking with the rock star dream. They will likely fail there too, but have better odds than MyInstaTubeTweetFace fame.... I'll even go a step further in saying the greatest Urbexers ever aren't even here, and don't bother with pictures.

LOL. That was the laugh I needed this morning.

|
Posted by Steed I like these sentences a lot. One of the rules I made basically says the same thing but less eloquently.

Thank you. Destroying an object's link to history is a big deal. It degrades the meaning of the object and the site from where it was removed.

I know this is off topic, but is that your Tegu? Great pic!
|
Mine was bigger, he been about 2 feet long if he had his whole tail. He was a killer. No images of him. That though is what they do.
Posted by Steed In Korea, if you're caught in any abandoned place with something in your bag from the location, you're getting a criminal record. In recent years I've found police are more attentive to catching me and searching my bag. I've worked with some and feuded with others over UE ethics. Urban exploration is not a well-understood concept in this country, but when it becomes a thing, I don't want the whole country thinking we're scavengers or vandals. That's a big deal that is likely to affect my future livelihood and ability to stay in this country, maybe even to stay out of jail. Reputation is paramount for all urban explorers, and one asshole who ruins it is putting at risk a lot of other people.
|
Spot on. Many times the moment you take or break something, trespassing becomes a crime. I don't want to have to explain some numb skull theft to all my future employers. Or have a LEO pull it up when they run me! In the last 8 years my CDL has been run over a dozen times by LEOs. Having a clean criminal record saved me from a lot of bs, and from being further investigated, arrested or run out of town.

What if it’s a case where the building is being 100% demoed? For instance, a buddy of mine went into a fairly historical hospital in my area the day before demo was started and grabbed a few small things (signs, plaques, books, etc) because of the historical value and the threat of losing such things. He wants to donate it to the historical society for the city but also doesn’t want the questioning that might come with it so he’s debating between framing the things or donating. I was on the fence about it because I knew nobody would ever step foot in there again aside from the people destroying it but at the same time it is still theft. Opinions on this?

After the owners release the building(s) then it becomes the demo contractors property. If you take it without permission of the effective owner it is theft. The demo contractors I worked with will prosecute anyone stealing their property. Be happy if you can take pictures; don't get greedy... Do you really deserve the role of curator?

Call it historical preservation, a "moral circle jerk", whatever you want. A thief is a thief is a thief. If your weak moral compass can't wrap its tiny pea brain around that, than anyone and everyone in this thread consider this - This is a PUBLIC thread on a PUBLIC forum. If anyone wants to steal some garbage, whatever - knock yourself out - but you make us ALL look bad. It is why we are classified with vandals, graffiti "artists", scrappers, burnouts, and thieves. If you genuinely lack morals and insist on preserving that sign, name plaque, or mold-ridden Alf pog, then keep it to your effing selves already. We are here to explore and share said exploring, not discuss when it is and isn't ok to STEAL something. Fucking hell.

Liked not locked! I want one of these joker geniuses to report back here next time they get caught lifting stuff from a site and advise us on how the cops and the county attorney react to their "preservation" vs theft story, Im betting a cold one right now that it just wont fly. Plus as its been said before, they ruin it for the next guys so if Im a local and find out some shit birds are stealing from some local sites I will offer two choices:
A. I call The Man let them sort it out (not a moral dichotomy I know Im guilty of trespassing)
B. They return the stolen souvenirs or get an ass-whoopin on the spot, I'll be long gone before they come to

Generally the owner -is- the demo company. Their bid is based partially on scrape metals they can salvage. With houses that may not be the case. & Used furniture can have bedbugs... no joke. They can survive for 2 years without feeding. Real nasty little buggers.
|
I never get anything with cushions/leather. only wood for that reason. And the fact that the other furniture tends to be nasty.
And to think "Chad" isn't even my real name. |

I completely agree with this especially the no photos by the greats section. I’m no great by any means but sometimes do notice the ease of exploring without the camera gear

Bed bugs go for wood too and there’s all those nice joint spaces for hiding in

That won't always save you. Their thin bodies can squeeze into very tight places. Fumigation is the only foolproof method. They hide well... and are normally active at night.

I laughed so hard my coke got sucked into my nose. You look like the only ass you're whipping is a 17 year old Korean boy on a party bus. Ole Rhode Island cricket team player lookin ass. Quit talking shit before you spring your wrist on the keyboard.

Yuck. Thankfully most of the houses in my area haven't been lived in for a long time.
