Oh... part two. The Cavalier Z24 didn't work out. I met the guy in Waverly PA. He brought the car. From the road, it looked great, was ready to have unicorns and rainbows follow me home. Luckily, my friend Will is far more practical and crawled under the car. Good thing. Rocker panels were very crispy and almost totally rotted. There were two mystery jams in the floorpan where the car bottomed out or was run over something, or lifted wrong. Behind the cladding on both doors was suspect and when I pushed on the drivers' side, it gave a little. I was completely disappointed, thanked the guy for his time and headed back for NY without a Z24.
As they say in the movies... Next?
Will I ever have a toy? Or am i cursed?

I agree with Sam. A bus that can exceed the speed limit would be interesting.

I'm all for big engines in vehicles they don't belong in, but I can think of better engines to swap into vehicles than a 2.8 liter, and I could also think of some vehicles are aren't quite as valuable when restored. Like a 70's Bus or a Vanagon. Quality of workmanship looks good, though. Just seems like a lot of work for a V6 that wasn't exactly known for being amazing... with that much work, installed in a vehicle that has the potential to be worth a shit-ton of money, why not at least go with some fire breathing V8?

the 2.8L actually isn't that bad of an engine if you understand it, know what to look for and order the correct go-fast parts. I have had great luck with the MPFI 60degree V.
the SFI engine, well, that was a boat anchor.

...meanwhile, Toyota Camrys and Chevrolet SSs are dominating NASCAR. Doesn't matter all that much when the race car only bears a slight resemblance to the production car, does it?

I have to admit, my friend's Fiero which has a cammed 2.8, some ancient aftermarket PROM in the ECM, a mild port and polish plus some exhaust work is fucking quick, and it's been reliable forever. Sounds good, too.

Theyre fun unique cars with a vast aftermarket, a ton of OEM plus and rare euro goodies, easy to work on, and easy to modify. And the sweet sound of any VR6 is orgasmic.
Not to mention just overall more sturdy interior, and the cars age well.

oh yeah they're fun and unique... when they catch fire, when the check engine light goes from code to code to code just to be capricious, they are NOT easy to work on and as for modifying, it's too bad so many VW 'enthusiasts' have such questionable tastes.

I never understood why VW has a history of electrical issues...they have freaking Bosch handling most of it, not Lucas!
