Are you inferring that by posting it, if illegal, would show some sort of civil disobedience that defines or clarifies character and motive?

The little tagger Casey took down all her posts. Would it make her a hard core artist if she had left them up?

It was a philosophical discussion based on purely hypothetical set of rules that say:

Planking itself is legal.

Sharing photos of yourself planking is illegal and actually strictly enforced. A week in jail or a probation term barring you from using social media for a year.

From there, you can conclude that people will continue to plank if there's joy in activity itself and simply not share on social media. The ego-seekers whose primary purpose is to produce contents to boost his IG stats won't do it, because the whole joy is blown up for them.

Cameras had self timers for decades, but we didn't have notable selfie related incidents until Instagram like thing became a hit.

The whole phenomenon is peer driven. Fellow peers determine what is acceptable for many; be it legal or not is more of an after thought to many. The mob rules. Especially for the immature who have mastered the medium but not the long term consequences of their actions or the harm it might have on others. What the actual act is for these people is irreverent.

"We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us." Father John Culkin

I support Anomalicious' planking pictures. Most others I don't.

As far as Instagram goes I post my pictures on there frequently, same reason I post them on Flickr, no real reason at all, not to become famous, not for attention, just primarily to share them with friends.

I am not specifically condemning Instagram despite what I said earlier.

It's the behaviors around instant sharing apps that cause problems for UE. Instagram is meant to allow immediate sharing.

A group of immature high schoolers might do something like smash mirrors in the school bathrooms so they can brag about their notoriety posting stuff for their 469 followers they haven't even met face to face using their top secret private Instagram account THEN act all surprised when police gets a wind of it
Sadly, stupidity of that level isn't limited to juveniles.

Not IG, but UE specific example:
Some of you maybe aware of a thread here. Narrating from one explorer's first hand account: He explored a place full of dangerous stuff. He posted pictures publicly. He also tells his family about his exploration and shared pictures with them. His mom had a working relationship with the business and she was unimpressed by what her son was able to get into, so she called the business.

The business found the pictures and the webmaster got a complaint. It took a while for the explorer to learn that his mom reported it and turmoil ensured into a witch hunt for who might have ratted.

They're idiots.

sure it's fast, probably fun but;

1. You are giving up your identity and making yourself liable.

2. You absolute idiot. Instagram's TOS says they OWN any photos they take. That masterpiece photo of yours you somehow managed to take? they have the right to monetize it, nice going.

Instagram is for the pre-teen crowd. If you want to cater to little kids who live at home with their parents... by all means.

I highly doubt they have a valid claim to any images of users that would hold up in court other than on that one site. To do that they would need to show some type of compensation was given. Until the owner says otherwise though, they may use the images.

Eh i suppose, but basically unless you actually fight for anything they can monetize your stuff, and you probably won't get the attention. Anyways, that's a neat fact.

My ex is one of these. It's REALLY fucking irritating when you work so hard to find a spot and then someone blares it all over the internet for idiots to ruin for others. I'm not gonna lie, I will post my favorite picture from an explore on instagram, but it's only ever one and never reveals the location. Typically instagram explorers from my area are only interested in it for about a month, take shitty photos of themselves in said buildings, then get bored because they put no effort into looking for new places and move on to the next "fad"

I personally use Instagram, but for other reasons and I don't post anything urbex on there. Personally I feel that the Instagram explorers are ruining the whole point of urbex. They're only posting for the attention, so their followers are going to be like "oh where is that, you should show me next time" and then that place gets vandalized and everyone goes there. All in all, I feel like they ruin the whole urbex lifestyle
